"Several gas lines crossed this apartment-building roof on a mixture of old wood blocks and improvised metal supports. The modified-bitumen membrane underneath had reached the end of its useful life, but the piping could not be pushed aside while the roof was replaced. A licensed plumbing contractor inspected the lines and developed a sequence for raising and supporting them without interrupting service to the whole building.
