"I cannot speak highly enough of Tom and Brad Green of Colonial Restorations. We have lived in our antique house for 16 years now, and like most old homes, some of its previous repairs were good, some not so good. Tom Green worked on this house for its previous owners, and his work was, by far, the best in the house. So, we continued to use Colonial - Tom, then Tom and Brad - as we learned the ropes about caring for an old house - our first house, old or new. Over the years, they have replaced sills and posts and beams, and rebuilt parts of our loose stone foundation. Most recently, they replaced the last original posts in our basement, (one of which was a tree trunk still with bark on it), including pouring new custom footings, in advance of our finally cementing the dirt floor. The work here is never easy - nothing is level, nothing is square - but the Greens' end result has always been beautiful - strong and made to last. Their prices are fair and without hidden costs....maybe not the lowest bid you might get, but you know it's a real bid that they will stand behind. They triage projects for us, giving us an idea of what other items will likely need attention in the next few years. We're not done with this house yet....we've never won the lottery, and there's always another repair..... and plan to use them again soon. I feel confident knowing that the next owners of this house, whoever they might be, will see the quality of the work and know that we cared enough to have the right people help us with the ongoing repair and maintenance of a 275+ year old house. I am a real person, a real customer, with no ties to the company, and was more than happy to write this review."

"After purchasing an Angie's List Deal, I received the measuring kit in the mail promptly. The template and instructions provided to draw my split table top and each of the leaves were easy to use and understand. I mailed the completed materials and received the table pads very quickly. The table splits in the middle to allow insertion of up to 3 additional leaves. The table also has 2 drop leaves. That's 7 pads. All fit perfectly. I have used them on the table for family parties (not every day) and they're durable and built to last. I keep them in the box they arrived in to protect them when not in use. These are a worthwhile investment."

"It went great. Mark fit me into his schedule at the last second. Travis got to the house early and worked quickly. He was able to preserve the cabinets as I requested for later reuse. Would use them again in a heartbeat.

"

I exchanged emails and pictures in advance of my appointment, and got some details about what to expect including the names of both workers. The workers arrived a bit early (so much better than late:-), I showed them what I needed, and one person started the work while I went to the hardware store with the other fellow to purchase the materials needed.

There was one drywall project that I thought would require an expensive repair. Instead, they fixed it easily and I was thrilled.

They fixed a crooked cabinet in my kitchen that had been driving me crazy.

They replaced door trim and added baseboard trim to several rooms, including the kitchen. After they left I discovered that they'd actually moved the refrigerator and put trim on that portion of floor too! I didn't even think to request this and was so happy to see it. Clearly, they take their work seriously and wanted to do the best job possible, but this was above and beyond and I'm so happy!

I'd purchased a block of hours at a discount from Angie's list, and they finished my tasks a few minutes early. So they offered to do a few other minor things instead of packing up immediately. Wonderful!

I am so very pleased with this company. I would absolutely use them again and would recommend them to anyone. The work they did for me was simple, but given the level of quality and attention to detail, I'd trust them with something larger without hesitation.

"    IN the beginning we had several companies come in and give us bids and options on getting the cabinets repaired.  Two of the companies voiced that the cabinets were too severely damaged and needed to be completely striped and refinished.  with a cost that was between 4000 and 6000$.  I had heard from a friend about a process called restoration. with that process i was told that aged or damaged cabinets could be brought back to looking new for a fairly inexpensive cost.  Then asked both the businesses if they new anything about restoration both responded with thats not possible and doesn't work.      To say the least I was not convinced.   I then called my friend who told me about the restoration, she gave me a referral card for The Wood Doctor. Right from the start the wooddoctor crew made us feel comfortable about having them in our home. They seemed polite, professional, and trustworthy. I asked them about the restoration process. THey explained the process and told us the cost. In the short of it we preceded with them. THe results were awesome! The cabinets looked like new and cost was a fraction of what it would have cost to completely strip and refinish the cabinets.  THANK YOU WOOD DOCTOR."

"Installation of Bathroom Grab Bars, and Installation of outside Back Steps Railing: Outstanding experience, would highly recommend them. Define the job well with them: they will listen well, and provide a good solution. They welcomed my inputs for the jobs, which included a detailed paper and photos. Where my ideas left off, they took off splendidly: Both installing the bathroom grab bars, and the back steps railing, needed ultra attention to safe, solid installation, and they provided both jobs, with good looking results at reasonable costs and timely completion. They asked us to test the grab bars and the step rails in their presence, to assure they were completely what we needed. The grab bars installation was on an old wall of lath and plaster, and they found wall studs for solid mounting. I provided the grab bars, they provided the mounting know-how. This took about 1.5 hrs. The back steps rail solution for a short flight (2) of outside cement steps provided a rock solid installation using good looking pipe and 2x4 cedar studs: about 4 hours work. This was a good example of how they completed my idea of what the railings would look like: my idea was a bit hazy! Their work was high quality and innovative, totally working with us to provide a very safe result, that looked great too. They were very polite, listened well, talked over solutions well, until we all knew what the results would achieve in safety and looks. Professional, on phone and on site. The timeliness was good: 1 week between initial contact / estimate to job completion. Job wrap up with us was good, assuring, and personable, Cleanup was good. Cost writeup was very complete: they finely detailed all their labor and material costs, so all was accounted for with no surprises: the total was about $700 less than the estimate! In conclusion this experience exuded real professionalism, know-how, and commitment to the customer; and I will want them here again. I would recommend them to others too."

"David and his team did an outstanding job in completing our indoor pool addition project. Although the schedule was impacted by covid issues, David persevered and we ended up with a beautiful pool house that exceeds our expectations. He is experienced in all aspects of home construction, including design and planning, and we ended changing our addition plans based on his experienced inputs. David is a clear communicator and open to listening to our change requests, clearly stating the pros and cons but always following through with the homeowners expectations. He is focused on quality and not in taking shortcuts and it is clear that he and his team take pride in their work. We would not hesitate to recommend him and his team for any homebuilding project, including a complex one like an indoor pool."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Rainier, OR

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
