"Great!! Two different handymen, two different occasions. Both men were professional and friendly. Replacing the interior door took some time, and it was worth it! Dean was meticulous (and went up and down the stairs so many times) to make sure the door fit properly in the frame and opened easily over the carpet (which the previous door never did). Separately our front stoop needed repair - pulling off the existing stone/brick that was deteriorating and replacing it with bluestone. James does beautiful work - he is a master in masonry. Coming out of lockdown and having both men show up with all the necessary PPE put me at ease - they were being very careful and following all the guidelines. I've already scheduled them for more work. Well worth the price!!"

"Contacted me the same day. Send him pictures about the damaged siding areas. They sent a guy out the next day morning. Quick and efficient repair as I had replacement panels available. Final cost as agreed before without any surprises. Honestly a perfect job done and most efficient and accurate! Will hire them again for anything else I need!"

"They replaced a drop-down attic stair. The work was done well and cleanly. Some slight damage to a wall was repaired the next day even though it meant the job foreman waiting in his truck in my driveway for a couple hours while the spackle dried."

"The two technicians arrived early and set right to work. The work was done extremely professionally with care and neatness. The extent of the dry rot repair turned the job into a full day. As promised the bulk of trash was cleaned up and hauled away. Moved furniture was put back into place The only area for improvement is for the workers to offer to vacuum inside before leaving ( as other contractors have done without asking). All in all ,from Solon's initial visit , to ordering, and then receiving delivery we are very pleased."

"Excellent! This was my second time using MTL Contracting and once again I am 100% beyond pleased with the services rendered. Matt did an amazing job pressure washing my house and gutters. He also installed gutter guards which look amazing. He was able to color match the roof shingles with the guards. My dryer was not working properly so Matt suggested to clean the duct work and what we found was amazing, it's amazing the house didn't catch fire prior to the cleaning. The dryer works perfectly now, like it's brand new! I will definitely be calling MTL Contracting again for more work around my home this Spring!"

"We had to create a lot (>12) holes in the ceiling to run some cables. Fabricio was very quick to provide a quote and we booked the job within a couple of hours. The holes have been patched very professionally using good quality repair patches and filler that Fabricio sourced for us, sanded smooth and painted. The job was done with a minimum of mess and looks great. Fully reccomended!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Raritan, NJ

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
