"I researched basement waterproofing solutions and was considering doing it myself. Then I found Safe Basements and read the literature about their product/process. To me, it seemed better than other similar products. I was surprised that they cover my place -- 2 hours into Wisconsin, or 3 hours from Litchfield. Brad came out to inspect the problems in my basement -- horizontal cracking, bowing, and water intrusion. He was able to explain the causes of those problems as well as others that I hadn't noticed. We agreed to pay for anchors to stabilize one wall that was bowing, and install drain tile and a sump pump. I'll be honest, I didn't shop around. I have no idea what other companies are charging for the same services. I normally get 3 or 4 bids or other opinions. I felt comfortable with the amount of research that I'd done, the knowledge Brad seemed to have, and the information about the products that I decided to hire Safe Basements without talking to other companies. I don't regret that decision. The wall anchor/stabilization crew called me before leaving Litchfield. Their ETA was pretty close to the actual time of arrival. When they arrived, we discussed the work being done. They did the work. They cleaned up. They gave me information about the anchor system and what I needed to do to correct the bowing and cracks. Everything was done as expected. The drain tile/sump crew was stuck at a previous job. They called me the day before (Tuesday) my job was expected to start to let me know there would be a delay starting my job. He then called in the middle of the start day (Wednesday) to let me know, they wouldn't be to my house until the next day. I was expecting a call between 7 and 8 on Thursday to let me know they were leaving Litchfield. Instead, I got a call at about 7:15 to let me know they were 15 minutes from my house. When they arrived, we talked about the work to be done, they cocooned my stuff in plastic, and they went to work. I think they worked until about 7 that day. They returned on Friday at about 8:30, having stopped to dump my concrete and dirt and to pick up gravel and concrete. They worked until about 10:30pm on Friday. I appreciated that they finished on Friday even though it was later than I expected. They cleaned up everything thoroughly, and walked me through the details of the sump pump and battery backup systems. Even though they'd driven a long distance, worked two very long days, and it was very late Friday, I didn't feel they rushed through. The job was complete. I think they would have stayed later if I'd had anymore questions. Unfortunately, one of the workers left his very nice tape measure, and I have not been able to get it back to him."

"Jaymey was great to work with and had excellent communication.  A good part of this renovation was done while I was out of state and yet I felt very comfortable with what was being done.  He was full of great ideas and always had a way to get around the problems we encountered, which were many as most of the previous work in the house had been a previous owner's do-it-yourself work.  I was amazed at his patience as he worked to make sure I was happy with the work.  The quality of his work is outstanding. <br /> I knew what I wanted to do,  (make one big room from the shopped up room already existing, redo existing very minimal poorly designed and cramped bathroom  with only small shower and sink, and add toilet and storage, and add shower to bathroom upstairs) <br /> However, with Jaymey's input, the design became so much better.  There were all kinds of pipes hanging down taking up space, the lighting was terrible,  there was no storage.  There was a water softener, water heater, oil drum, taking up space that are now hidden along with the additional storage area.  The upstairs bathroom had only a tub and was very small and cramped. <br /> Because of Jaymey's expertise and willingness to work with me I now have a beautiful carpeted basement, with one great room, a bedroom with an egress window, a laundry room with a laundry table and a cabinet for storage, and a beautiful bathroom with cabinets for storage, a heater and blower, toilet, and a large beautifully tiled shower, and new windows.  Upstairs the door was changed to make more room, the window was replaced with a vinyl window so that we could have a shower without worrying about getting the wood wet,  the walls were tiled around the tub and up high so a shower could be added.  All the hardware was replaced and everything was painted. <br /> We had to have major plumbing and electrical work done as part of this project and Jaymey found excellent contractors for thisproject. <br /> I would be happy to work with this company again as I believe they do everything to make sure the customer is happy and their work is really quality.  I could not be happier. <br />"

"They were comparable to everybody else and the only reason we did not with them is because they were too far off. We felt like we were were being carried a long. I would not use them again."

"Excellent. Work was performed timely and the way we wanted it. We have a smaller cabin and needed utilities installed in a smaller closet. We also had a complete cabin remodel. Work was professional and completed on time."

"Contractor met at the site to review the conditions and then provided an estimate. We set a date the crew would arrive and the contractor called several days before to see if they could come a day ahead of schedule. We were delighted they could start early. they arrived promptly at 8:00 AM on the start date and began work. The crew was courteous and worked diligently to finish the job in 2 1/2 days. Each day they cleaned up the site before they left and when the work was completed they cleaned the site very nicely. At several point the contractor had questions about how we wanted the details completed and we were happy to be consulted on these issues. We added a layer of closed cell insulation under the metal roof to help dampen the sound and teh contractor provide the additional material at a very fair price. <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Richwood, MN

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
