"Joshua came to my home because I’ve lost power in parts of my home. He took a look at my homes electrical system and then we sat down where he explained the issue to me. He worked hard and even pulled a permit for the job and because of his hard work my home has all of its power back on."

Sometimes you open up an outlet and you find this. I am glad that it did not turn into something more.

Small jobs welcome

"Andrew came to our house between Ann Arbor and Plymouth at 8 PM on Tuesday when a storm caused an electrical outage. We had a generator but we're only getting partial power in the house. Andrew ran tests inside the house, determining that not enough power was coming into the house. He then started testing different areas of the generator until he found the part not working. Once he located the problem, he quickly fixed it. Because he didn't give up on me or my problem, he restored electricity, saving me hundreds from food spoilage in a refrigerator and freezer. I don't think most electricians would have stuck with the problem or been able or willing to fix the generator. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would."

"This is an exceptional company all around. I believe that hiring someone to do work in your home is an already challenging task, but hiring someone for electrical work which can become complex and critical to complete correctly is even more difficult. St. John Electric impressed me on every front. They were very communicative throughout the process, providing information to me throughout the day, no matter how many questions I asked. They were thorough in explaining exactly what was going to happen and making sure that I was not only aware, but that I was satisfied before and after the work started. We originally hired St. John Electric to help us install a transfer switch in our home for a portable generator. They did a phenomenal job in making sure we understood how to use it, how to operate the new system and made sure everything worked perfectly before they left. Once we realized how amazing they were, we quickly scheduled more work with them. They have not only made our home better in terms of fixing long-standing problems and finally giving us the capability to use things the right way, but they've made our home and family safer. They discovered wiring problems we weren't aware of and never would have noticed. Other contractors and electricians have glossed over these items time and time again, but St. John Electric pointed the problems out, told us our options and then ensured that they were fixed properly. Being happy with their performance is an understatement...simply put, this company is amazing and I am so thankful to have found them to start work with. I would recommend them for any type of work involving electrical you can think of...they know what they are doing, they will do a terrific job and they will blow you away with the results. Thank you so much for making our lives better and our family safer."

"Writer is a true professional and electrical guru. He arrived within the allotted time frame, got right to work and quickly identified the problem. He even welcomed me to watch him while he worked as he explained the intricacies of the electrical outlet (which was a GFCI multi-branched oulet, connected to other garage and bathroom outlets). It was clear he knew what he was doing. I would recommend him for any electrical problem or fresh installation, and plan to hire him in the future for other electrical projects I have around my house."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Rochester, MI

Yes, a licensed electrician is essential for this project. Running an electrical service from the road to your house involves connecting to utility power lines, complying with national and local electrical codes, and safely handling high-voltage systems.

Licensed professionals understand proper wire sizing, grounding requirements, and voltage drop calculations needed for safe installation. Most jurisdictions require permits and inspections that only certified professionals can obtain. The safety risks and potential for property damage make this project inappropriate for DIY attempts.

Overhead installations are less expensive than underground options. For a 1000-foot run, overhead service costs between $8,000 and $15,000, while underground service ranges from $10,000 to $25,000.

Overhead lines require less labor and fewer materials since they don't need trenching or conduit. However, underground lines offer better protection from weather events and aesthetic benefits. Your decision should balance your budget constraints with long-term reliability and visual preferences.

You might need to upgrade your electrical panel depending on your power requirements. If your existing panel cannot handle the additional load from the extended service, upgrading to a 200-amp service (costing $750 to $2,000) may be necessary.

A licensed electrician can evaluate your current system and determine if an upgrade is required. Factors include what you'll be powering at the end of the line, existing electrical demand, and whether voltage drop over the distance will affect performance.

Running electric service from the road to a house requires electrical permits from your local building department, costing between $500 and $2,000 depending on your location. You may also need excavation permits for trenching work if installing an underground service. Your utility company will have its own application process for connecting to its grid. A licensed electrical contractor can handle all the necessary permit applications as part of their service, ensuring your installation meets all local code requirements.
