"The service was for Radon Mitigation in our home that had higher than acceptable Radon levels. The work was professionally done, and care was taken to protect carpeting etc during their work. The crew updated us home owners as they did their work and asked permissions for needed modifications to the house. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for quality workmanship, congenial communication and moderate pricing."

"Everything--from the first contact to the end of installation--was excellent.  The people are friendly, knowledgeable, and professional.  Service is punctual and fast.  These people know what they are doing, and their work is flawless.  We had one very minor problem with a new-machine glitch, and the correction was handled immediately.  Tonna Mechanical is a pleasure to work with. <br /> <br />"

"Our first radon result was 10.4, which was tested by another local company. We ordered a different test (a link on Athelon's website) to confirm the number, which was 7.7 (U.S. EPA acceptable level for indoor radon is <4.0 pCi/L). We had 3 companies review our situation and provide quotes. Athelon's quote was in the middle, about $100 more which was negligible. Dan Hylland was the only one who suggested an interior route could be an option through a closet, into the attic, and through the roof (vs venting it out at essentially ground level and then running the pipe up the side of the house and 18" above the roof, which would be an eyesore). However, on the day of installation, there were a ton of obstacles that prevented them from starting the internal route right away. But Dan was super thorough and did his due diligence to make the internal route work, which was totally worth it so we don't have a 4" pipe jetting out the side of our house and upward 18" beyond the roof. Athelon did a fantastic job and I would recommend them in a heartbeat."

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"Everything went splendid with K&S, and without them, I may still be without heat (in Minnesota, in March). Brian spent way more time than he should have had to, dealing with a lazy home warranty company, and ensuring that I knew that they were trying to give me a cheap replacement for the first rate unit that was there. He took the time to school me on what to tell them, so I didn't sound like the ignorant homeowner that I was . I now have a super efficient brand new Lennox furnace in my home, thanks to K&S heating. I was so impressed with their service, I applied to work there."

"I was disappointed in the beginning when I didn’t receive a response from the sales rep after 3 contact attempts. It turned out he left for another job. The reason for us hiring them is because we really liked his business ethics and trusted him based on his military background. They office staff was very professional in handling the matter and reassured me the work would be complete to high standards. I wasn’t present but my husband said they were very professional. They worked hard to keep things clean and were accommodating to the needs of our pet birds who required that the furnace remain on. However I’m dissapointed that they did not discuss if they completed the radon testing or not like they said they would. The only other issue is that we did financing through them and they needed a paper signed. Instead of leaving the dorm with us the first day to give them the second they gave it to us the second day which meant my husband had to take more time off to drive to my work to have me sign it then drive it back to them before returning to work himself. I’m not 100% sure if I’d hire them again. It depends on if we find out if they did the radon testing or not."

"Our house was built in 1941. We not only felt we needed to do waterproofing but needed a radon extracting system, sump pump, dehumidifier, wall paneling and new windows with window wells. The project worked like clock work with members of the American Waterworks team. Only have 3 windows and small section of paneling to finish. Paneling can't be finished until new water line is installed. All will be completed when windows arrive. In 1 yr. American Waterworks will come back to check all is working well. Extensive project that wasn't cheap. We felt we got our money's worth!"

FAQs for radon gas abatement projects in Rochester, MN

The only way to know whether your home or water supply contains radon is to schedule a professional test. A qualified radon inspector will collect samples, deliver lab-verified results, and explain the findings for $150 to $800. Once you know your exact levels, you and your radon mitigation pro can choose the right system and tackle the problem before it affects your family’s health.

Both roles tackle radon, but they focus on different steps. Inspectors test your home, interpret the results, and determine whether levels exceed EPA guidelines. Mitigation pros design and install the system that lowers those levels. Some companies do both, but the skills and equipment differ, so always verify that the person you hire is properly certified for the specific service you need.

Installing a mitigation unit fixes radon problems by reducing indoor gas levels to established safe standards. A system designed and installed by a mitigation expert, tailored to your home's specific layout and foundation, guarantees effective radon reduction. This expert installation ensures consistent performance over time while safeguarding your indoor air quality.

Open windows and doors do not reduce radon levels because they trigger a pressure imbalance that draws radon-laden air into your home. This practice fails to control radon concentration and can even worsen the issue. An active suction mitigation system provides a proven, safe, and effective solution to reliably reduce radon levels.

Radon mitigation systems generally last between 10 and 30 years, depending on system type and maintenance. Passive systems endure the longest because they have no moving parts, whereas active systems, which use a fan, require fan replacement every 5 to 10 years. System components, such as PVC pipes, seals, and fittings, can remain effective for decades when paired with periodic inspections and proper maintenance.

Radon mitigation systems consume between 300 and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on fan size and system design. On average, an active radon fan draws 100 to 300 watts continuously, which translates to roughly 876 kWh annually, and adds $30 to $300 to your energy bill each year. Choosing a high-efficiency fan and ensuring tight sealing around pipes helps minimize these ongoing costs.
