"I got my old wooden stairs completely updated by Joey Builders, man they really upgraded the look. They replaced the old banisters with modern glass and steel railings. It?s got that frameless glass feel that makes everything look so open and airy, the steel posts give a sturdy clean look. I always wanted it to feel less dark and cramped. now it?s like the stairs are part of the room, not just between floors. The guys did everything neat and fast, they even helped pick the right mix of glass and steel so it matches the rest of the house. Honestly it feels like walking on the future. Really happy with how it turned out."

Small jobs welcome

"Bob + crew are fantastic! The team rehabilitated an 80 year old cabin/shed which had more sentimental value than monetary. Bob and Pat understood our goals, we received our estimate within 48 hours and they were ready to work immediately. Our time estimate was two weeks and the only delays were due to weather. The crew was always on time, had the tools and equipment they needed and left the construction site clean and neat each day. Our cabin needed more work than originally planned and the crew worked carefully and deliberately every day to rebuild the foundation, floors, porch and replace rotting wood on walls. They wrapped up the project with a great pergola that we look forward to enjoying for many years. We will definitely work with them again for future projects - thank you!"

"my usual go to for help is Yelp, but their handyman who responded was so flaky initially telling me that they're coming the next Sun but told them that it will be raining then so they said Sat which has a lesser chance of rain which I agreed to. prior to Sat I sent a reminder for the appointment but they said they'll come Sun!!! that's when I tried Angi & Robert called after my request has been sent. When I found out that he's from San Rafael I told him that I'm located in the mid-Peninsula. No problem he said. So after years of contemplating of DIY a light installation under the gutter (on a very high area of my house) it was done! It help that he was a roofer before so he had his safety harness with him & Buck his business partner help as well. Very reasonable priced. I will recommend him anytime!!! Keep up the good work Robert & Buck."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Saint Helena, CA

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
