"Dani is one of the best contractors I have utilized. He is knowledgeable in the vast area of electrical, lighting and other electronic products. He installed several digital video and lighting equipment throughout our home. In addition, upgrading light fixtures and outdated electrical wall plugs. What I appreciated the most is he took to the time to educate me on the solutions and repairs he provided. If your looking for a professional and electrician I recommend DC Electrical Services! Would definitely used again in the future!"

"During our initial phone conversation, I told Brandon that I wanted him to install under-cabinet lights in my kitchen. He was unsure about whether he could do it in the allotted two hours I purchased as a special deal. He said he would come investigate the situation. I had the 18" LED light and electric wire ready to install. When he arrived and saw that my kitchen had painted dry wall (no back splash or wall paper) and the plug configuration, he agreed he would do one light. When I asked if I could watch so that I could install 3 more lights, he agreed. He installed the light using wires off of the GFI plug in the kitchen. It has more wires than the plugs I will be wiring off of so we discussed the differences as he did the work. He taught me about positioning the light so it is wired to code. My kitchen had a cross board at the bottom of the cabinet inside the wall that Brandon had to drill through to feed the wire. I have some wallboard patching to do, but now I know how to deal with the problem when I encounter it. At the end of my project, I'll patch all the wallboard at once and may install a back splash to hide the patches. I am very pleased with my new under cabinet light and feel certain I can wire the rest. Brandon also cleaned up after himself when he was done.

"They showed up on a Tuesday, let me know what the problem was, fixed the problem that I had, and told me about future upgrades that I could wait on for now. They did this all in about an hour. They did a good job and had reasonable prices."

"Two men from GoGen arrived to help me sort out the origin of half my home losing power in the ceiling lights and wall plugs between four rooms. One told me that I needed to upgrade my outdoor electric box and that it was out of code for new homes. They then came into my home to test the electric current in the plugs that didn't work--one by one (even opening my fridge to confirm it was on). One of my breakers was tripped from the winter storm and flipping the switch fixed 95% of the problem. From there, they told me to conduct a diagnoses and repair to one line of connected plugs, the cost would be $365 per set, and that I had two, but they would only charge me for one. The set fee covered up to 4 hrs of work. The repair took 25 minutes and involved snipping a burned wire and re-twisting it with one that was in good condition to restore power. I later called to ask for the 20% Angies List Membership discount, and while hesitant, they honored it. This sort of balanced things out."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in San Marcos, TX

Yes, a licensed electrician is essential for this project. Running an electrical service from the road to your house involves connecting to utility power lines, complying with national and local electrical codes, and safely handling high-voltage systems.

Licensed professionals understand proper wire sizing, grounding requirements, and voltage drop calculations needed for safe installation. Most jurisdictions require permits and inspections that only certified professionals can obtain. The safety risks and potential for property damage make this project inappropriate for DIY attempts.

Overhead installations are less expensive than underground options. For a 1000-foot run, overhead service costs between $8,000 and $15,000, while underground service ranges from $10,000 to $25,000.

Overhead lines require less labor and fewer materials since they don't need trenching or conduit. However, underground lines offer better protection from weather events and aesthetic benefits. Your decision should balance your budget constraints with long-term reliability and visual preferences.

You might need to upgrade your electrical panel depending on your power requirements. If your existing panel cannot handle the additional load from the extended service, upgrading to a 200-amp service (costing $750 to $2,000) may be necessary.

A licensed electrician can evaluate your current system and determine if an upgrade is required. Factors include what you'll be powering at the end of the line, existing electrical demand, and whether voltage drop over the distance will affect performance.

Running electric service from the road to a house requires electrical permits from your local building department, costing between $500 and $2,000 depending on your location. You may also need excavation permits for trenching work if installing an underground service. Your utility company will have its own application process for connecting to its grid. A licensed electrical contractor can handle all the necessary permit applications as part of their service, ensuring your installation meets all local code requirements.
