"I needed an overhead wire providing electricity to my detached garage moved. Tom showed up an hour after I called and the work was done less than an hour later. Can’t beat the speed and a very reasonable price."

"Ken went to work quickly, replacing the meter box and stub cable, making the small modifications in the panel.  He re- fastened the loose wires, including the telephone and CATV wires and drop lines, making for a neat arrangement on the siding, and saving me from having to contact the phone company to have them come and make repairs.  While he was completing his work he contacted the power company to come and restore power to the house thereby minimizing my outage.  He also made arrangements  for the inspection required when such cables are replaced.

Ken was very professional, advising me of the work that was required, and what was suggested, making sure that I understood what follow-up was necessary with the inspection.  It was a pleasure dealing with KWD, who made every effort to minimize my service outage.

"I used A-Star last summer. It went very well. From the salesman to the installers, everyone was very professional, very accommodating, and very punctual. The installation was done in the end of August 2014. When I initially contacted them, summer was just around the corner. As you can imagine, they were booked solid for installations through almost the end of summer, however, they loaned me 4 or 5 (I don't remember exactly) brand new window units to put throughout my house until they could complete the installation, and at no additional cost. I was very pleased with their service. Recently, an issue arose with the thermostat that affected our ability to use the Central Air. They came as soon as I called and serviced it at no charge being as that it had been installed less than a year ago. They offer service plans in connection with the manufacturers warranty, and they were significantly cheaper price wise than all the local competitors. I will continue to utilize their company and service, as well as highly recommend them to others.

"Dave Spaulding, owner of Medic Electric, is extremely knowledgeable with any type of electrical problem a client could be experiencing and knows how to rectify the situation. He goes beyond to get the job done correctly. I hired Dave to replace a dining room chandelier replacing it with a lighted ceiling fan w/ remote. This is only a 2yr newly constructed home. Suddenly, the circuit breaker to the room refused to hold in place. On that very same day, Dave rapidly returns only to find that the contractor's electrician did not do the wiring in this area according to the code regulations. He pulled up his sleeves and fixed it without additional charge and he already DID HIS JOB THE CORRECT WAY...needless to say, I'll soon be discussing this scenario with the builder. In today's society and specifically in a work environment, one would be hard-pressed to find a professional, dignified worker with this type of tenacity accompanied with honesty. Would I recommend Mr. Spaulding....yes with the highest commendations."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Schoharie, NY

Yes, a licensed electrician is essential for this project. Running an electrical service from the road to your house involves connecting to utility power lines, complying with national and local electrical codes, and safely handling high-voltage systems.

Licensed professionals understand proper wire sizing, grounding requirements, and voltage drop calculations needed for safe installation. Most jurisdictions require permits and inspections that only certified professionals can obtain. The safety risks and potential for property damage make this project inappropriate for DIY attempts.

Overhead installations are less expensive than underground options. For a 1000-foot run, overhead service costs between $8,000 and $15,000, while underground service ranges from $10,000 to $25,000.

Overhead lines require less labor and fewer materials since they don't need trenching or conduit. However, underground lines offer better protection from weather events and aesthetic benefits. Your decision should balance your budget constraints with long-term reliability and visual preferences.

You might need to upgrade your electrical panel depending on your power requirements. If your existing panel cannot handle the additional load from the extended service, upgrading to a 200-amp service (costing $750 to $2,000) may be necessary.

A licensed electrician can evaluate your current system and determine if an upgrade is required. Factors include what you'll be powering at the end of the line, existing electrical demand, and whether voltage drop over the distance will affect performance.

Running electric service from the road to a house requires electrical permits from your local building department, costing between $500 and $2,000 depending on your location. You may also need excavation permits for trenching work if installing an underground service. Your utility company will have its own application process for connecting to its grid. A licensed electrical contractor can handle all the necessary permit applications as part of their service, ensuring your installation meets all local code requirements.
