"Although we contracted and made an initial payment (1/3) on February 27, by mutual agreement the work began on 13 April 2015 to allow the work-site to dry out from the winter weather.  The contractor made incredible progress in the first two weeks demolishing the old deck & garage porch, pouring footers, raising the frame & putting on the roof.  The first crew was very hard working, here early in the morning, & leaving late in the afternoon (after cleaning up the area each day).  When rain was in the forecast, the crew would ask if they could make up the day on Saturday, which they did.  Everything we saw in the first 2 weeks was consistent with our previous great experience with Fox Creek 2 years earlier when they replaced all our siding, windows & doors. The only problem at that point was that a plain black roof (25 yr) was put on instead of the architectural roof (lifetime warranty) we asked for.  The contractor acknowledged the error and offered to replace the roof at no additional cost.  We had originally only contracted for 2 skylights so we asked if he'd install 2 more at no cost versus replacing the roof and he agreed.  We were told that everything was on schedule to complete the rest of the job in 2 weeks.  We made the second (of 3) payment on April 29 which was when the excavation work below the porch/deck was supposed to begin.  No one showed up to start this work for several days and when they did (it was a different crew from the first), they typically showed up around mid-morning and were gone by mid-afternoon.  We had beautiful weather during this period in which very little work got done.  The contractor claimed they were having trouble getting the supplier to deliver sand and crushed rock.  Since we're located in St. Mary's County which is a bit of a distance from the contractor's home base in Crownsville near Annapolis, they decided to use "local" suppliers & subcontractors (electricians) rather than those they normally use.  We found out later that the sand & gravel supplier was located in Brandywine about 40 miles from here (there are plenty of suppliers right here in the county).  When the sand & gravel finally showed up at 10:00 am one morning about the same time the crew arrived, the crew directed them to the spot they wanted it dumped and then everyone left shortly after that without doing anything.  We knew by then that the job wasn't going to be completed anywhere near the 3 & 1/2 week total time advertised.  The predictable springtime heavy rains started and we were delayed even more.  The week of May 11 was the first week we could see some progress each day.  The end product was beautiful.  A paver retaining wall was put in all around the perimeter below the deck/porch and in between the concrete slab under the porch and the pavered patio area below the deck.   <br /> <br /> We couldn't understand why the remaining work on the porch above couldn't go on while the below work was going on.  Wiring had to be put in, and also all the finish work (soffets, gutters, trim work, ceiling made of soffet rolls - looks very nice).  Most of the holdup turned out to be waiting for the "local" electrician to show up.  The electrician (Goudie) wasn't really all that local but was from Waldorf 35 miles up the road.  Our contractor had to threaten, cajole and/or beg Goudie to show up and install wiring so that the finishing work could be done on the porch.  We begged our contractor to get another licensed electrician (there are plenty of good ones right here in the county that we've done business with).  Anyway, once the electrician showed up we had to get them back several more times because they'd forget to do something we'd asked for or they didn't have a part and we'd end up in the same waiting game.  They did end up getting shamed into sending an electrician on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend to put in 2 ceiling outlets they''d forgotten to put in, but we still didn't have any fans or lights to enjoy that weekend, by which time our contractor assured we'd be enjoying the porch.  You don't EVER want to do business with Goudie Electrical.   <br /> <br /> To make a long story short, after a lot of nagging to get a lot of loose ends tied up, the work was finally finished and inspected the Thursday (the day) before this past 4th of July weekend.  The porch & deck are absolutely beautiful (we'll attach pictures if we can figure out how to do it - they will speak for themselves).  We got some extras that we asked for like 7" wide Azek boards along the tops of the vinyl railings inside the porch to serve as a counter top for setting drinks or small plates of food or snacks, which we've had a lot of nice compliments about.  They're the perfect height for pulling a barstool up to.  One of the things we didn't get that we expected was a decent landing area at the bottom of our deck stairs.  The crew threw grass seed and straw there.  When we asked about getting some sort of solid landing, they shoveled out the area and threw some leftover crushed rock on it and tamped it down.  When we asked if they were going to finish it (we told them they could use some of the many wall pavers that were left over) they said the wall pavers would require digging too deep. We offered to pick up (and did) some square flat stepping stones from Lowe's which we left for them.  One of the younger fellas who was there one day to meet with the inspector and had no tools just laid the stones down, stomped them down with his feet and let it go at that.  The area was not level and a downpour that evening directed a steady flow of water from the stones across our concrete slab.  We didn't bother asking again, just tore it up last weekend, leveled and tamped it down properly and reinstalled the stepping stones ourselves. <br /> <br /> Our sense through this whole experience was that there was nobody in charge.  Besides the first crew that started the project and came later on one day to install all the soffets and gutters, it appeared to be young fellas without any on-site direction or supervision.  They did a lot of good work but there was a lot of unfinished work that we had to call our contractor up to get fixed.  If we lived closer to Annapolis or the DC metro area, this would probably have been a much better experience.  They do good work at a fair price and the owners are very honest people and have the best of intentions.  But they appear to be ill-equipped to do business in St. Mary's, southern Charles or Calvert counties or other more distant locations.  I did mention to the owner that if he wanted to do more business here he needed to do more to establish relationships with truly local suppliers and subcontractors.  Communications also need to be improved all around - with the crews, between the partners, with suppliers, subs and us, the customers.  We had the sense that the crews didn't really enjoy coming here and that we were kind of at the bottom of Fox Creek's list of priorities due to our distance from their home base.  As much as we love the final product and will enjoy it and show it off for a lifetime, we couldn't go through the aggravation again.  We would encourage folks from the Annapolis and metro DC areas who are considering a project like this (or folks who aren't in any kind of a hurry to get a project like this completed in a reasonable amount of time) to give Fox Creek serious consideration.   <br /> <br />"

"Daniel and his partner installed new appliances and tile in my kitchen, I had new counter tops installed as well in my kitchen and master bathroom. I also used John Krause for a repair to my shed from water damage again Daniel and his partner did an excellent job for me. Very please with Daniel and his work. I believe Daniel is a sub-contractor for John Krause, but none the less in my opinion he did really good work and communicated with every step of the way."

"Perfect. I scheduled an appointment on the Angi app, and Mike came on time. He thoroughly reviewed the damaged siding on our initial visit. The original siding around our carport had a cap over the top that fell away, and the team came up with a different way to attach the siding so that problem wouldn't happen again. The crew arrived on time on the repair day, completed the task, and reviewed it with me before leaving. They provided excellent communication and service throughout the whole process. I highly recommend them and will be calling on them again for future remodeling needs!"

"What a wonderful experience! We had multiple quotes, Complete Exteriors had the best quality of materials at a reasonable price. I appreciated that Mike came out to measure then emailed me a quote. Other companies sent out high pressure sales associates. I suggest to get multiple quotes (if you can handle a 2 hr sales pitch) or read reviews and do your research. I have already recommended them to two of my friends. Complete Exteriors did a fantastic job the roof of our house and garage. I would definitely use them again!"

"Chesapeake's estimator called back less than 24 hours after initial contact and arrived 3 days later to measure the job. He provided the estimate on the spot and next day stopped by with shingle color samples plus addresses of homes with the two shingle colors we were interested in for our roofs. After signing the contract, we were given an approximate install date, which was 3 weeks out. We were promptly informed of a 1 week delay (due to rain) for the install. The crew completed the main house in 2 days ( a Friday and Saturday) and returned early on Monday to complete work on the garage. Aside from a couple of pieces of damaged vinyl siding, the crew was careful to protect shrubs and other plantings adjacent to the main house and garage. Chesapeake sent out their siding crew to replace the damaged vinyl siding. All in all, the project was completed in a timely and professional manner. Of 4 estimates we received, Chesapeak's was the most reasonable."

"Ran into a couple of PHR guys at a "home show". We have had an estimate from a few years back but other projects and covid got in the way. PHR sent out their sales rep, Matt, and he gave us a review of services and estimated the cost. Whole home reside, new soffits, new facsia, new gutters (upgraded to 5 inch). After almost 30 years...the siding was looking sad. Also, the way our house was built, you could hear neighbors dropping change in their driveway. The rep showed us the foam backed siding and we went with the 6 inch flat to change the look of our 4 inch home depot builder grade siding. CJ contacted us and came out with the final measurements. Re-calculated the estimate and came up with a $500 savings for us. cool. Two weeks later Gustavo showed up with his crew and started work taking off siding, putting up a moisture barrier and residing the house. I pointed out a couple of cables that I needed saved if possible and the old UHF antenna that could be removed. The crew worked from 7am to 6:30PM and spent another half hour cleaning up around the house. They did this 3 days straight and finished the siding, soffits and fascia by 6pm on the 3rd day. Everything looked AWESOME!!! A major upgrade for the house. The next day the gutter crew showed up and put seamless gutters up in a few hours and even added another downspout where the builder cheaped out and put only 1 down spout in the back of the house. The entire project took 4 days and the crews cleaned up everyday at the end of the day. We could not be happier with the results. We have gotten quite few positive comments from the neighbors. it looks like a brand new house! (on the outside at least :-) ) Some notes: Communication was constant, consistent throughout the process. Pricing, when you see the quality of the product they are putting up compared to the cheap builder grade they are taking off....you realize you get what you pay for. Sound! OMG! My house is quiet now!!!! I cannot hear every little thing that happens on the street or behind us. It is transformative!!! Professional....the crews were all business and worked all day. The trim work is very detailed and tight. They brought things to my attention that I had forgotten about , speakers in the soffits (forgot about them...but they are hooked back up now :-), ethernet cabling I ran to the second floor (wireless was not a thing in the 90's). Sales process: You will see a lot of negative comments about their sales motion, it is what it is. If you are just kicking tires with no intent to buy....it will be frustrating for you. But, if you are seriously looking to have work done, you appreciated the detail and time they take explaining the entire process. Financing: We qualified for a HUGE chunk of financing, in the end, we paid for the job upon completion and walk through. The interest rate was higher than I liked but if needed it was there. When we informed PHR we would be cutting a check, they canceled the financing immediately. No questions asked. I cannot say enough good things about our experience. I will admit, I was worried about how the project would go after reading some of these reviews and I am pleased it went very well. I would recommend PHR in heart beat."

"I couldn’t have asked for a better company for the projects I had done and the issues that arouse. Bryan started the process with me, and was there until the end making sure everything was alright. JLG was flexible and has the resources to fix problems that can arise. I started by getting 5 quotes for my project. A new roof, gutters, and front facade/trim replacement. By being more than a roofing company they were able to do all of the projects. Of the 5 quotes, the lowest and highest were very off, and of the 3 close ones, JLG offered the most at the best/lowest price. With a barn style roof, the second floor of my house has shingles on it, not siding which really drove up the price from some of the other companies. I had solar panels on my roof, and after signing the contract, they waited a month until the solar company could take them off. Within a week of knowing the solar panel removal date, they were ready to start. The roof was first. Crew was great, and professional. After removing the shingles, they replaced the plywood on roof as needed, they inspected and only replaced what was necessary. As they starting to put the new ones back on, they found out there had been a leak in one of my dormers. After closer inspection, it was found to be a long-time leak. All of the wood from the roof to the floor joists of the second floor was completely rotted. The wood was black, and just flaked off when touched. JLG was able to get someone over that day to look at the problem (Jim, the owner), assess it, and get someone to start working on fixing it. They kept me informed and gave me options to choose from on fixing the problem. By the next day, the hole in the side of my house was fixed, and covered. They removed part of a inside room wall, replaced it, added new floor joists, wall studs, drywall, subflooring, and fixed the roof wood work. Structurally everything was fixed. With that done they could finish the roof, and wait to finish the inside room work. I also had 4 skylights replaced, two sealed and two manual open. Gutters were done as the roof work ended, no issues, they replaced them and I had gutter guards installed. They work better than my old ones and no more gutter cleaning. The front facade and trim wood, was old, paint was starting to flake, and a woodpecker had been putting holes in it. They replaced the facade and trim on the front with new vinyl pieces and painted them. Really made the front of the house look better. The gutters were 2 days and the front part was a day. As JLG recommended, I kept at least 10% of the total project cost amount available for unforeseen issues. I knew replacing some of the plywood on the house would be needed. But, had no idea about the roof leak. Everything happened behind the wall, nothing was visible from the inside on the house. Replacing the stud and joists wood, outer plywood, and inside walls was all a surprise. JLG was able to handle it, and kept me informed on what was being done and was able to give me rough price estimates as the work continued so I could make sure I had everything covered. They made sure there were no surprises on the costs for the additional work. Everything was less than their worst-case estimate. Since they had someone there to repair the room, I also had them add the trim for the skylight back where needed and help fix a soft spot in one of my rooms. He was able to fix them all. All of the different crews cleaned up when done and didn’t leave a mess behind. With the leak and repair issues, the project got extended, but JLG kept everything moving ahead as much as they could. The original quote was good, and the cost of unexpected repairs was reasonable. Everyone from the house workers to the office staff were nice and courteous. I have another large project I need to do and will definitely be contacting Bryan about what JLG can offer on it."

FAQs for wood or fiber cement siding installation or complete replacement projects in Severna Park, MD

Yes, removing your existing siding before installing new cedar siding is essential for a secure and long-lasting installation. It helps eliminate hazards like rot and pest infestations and ensures a smooth surface for the new siding. Leaving old siding in place can compromise the appearance and integrity of your new cedar siding. Engaging a licensed siding contractor will ensure proper removal and preparation.

To determine how much cedar siding you'll need, start by measuring the height and width of each exterior wall of your home to calculate the area. For gable ends, measure from the base to the peak. Add up all these areas and then add an extra 10% to account for waste and future repairs. This ensures you purchase enough siding without running short.

Cedar siding endures between 20 and 40 years if maintained correctly from the start. This lifespan is secured by performing regular inspections for cracks, fungus, and bubbling and by pursuing consistent cleaning, painting, or staining with an appropriate sealant. Engaging a professional for periodic inspections ensures that your siding remains resilient and visually appealing for decades.

Your cedar siding must be maintained every three to five years through a thorough restaining or repainting process to preserve its strength and appearance. Regular maintenance prevents damage and ensures that the wood remains in peak condition. For homeowners seeking a less demanding upkeep schedule, choosing vinyl or aluminum siding offers a more resilient alternative while still providing exceptional style.
