"I first asked for a quote back in February of 2024. When I received the quote I decided to wait on this project. Then we lost power for 2 days due to a storm. I then decided it was time and contacted the contractor again. He sent me an updated quote and the project was scheduled. It's now installed and I'm very happy with how it turned out. Hopefully it will be a long time before we need to use the generator because we lose our power. But we are ready when it happens. I will definitely use this company again for any electrical jobs that come up. Andrew and his crew were great."

"Very friendly, and quick service.Highly recommended. Mike came did an estimate for to run a 60 amp subpanel to my shed from my house. He called juilie, for all underground locations of any thing buried ,before he trenchh 46 ft, down 24 inches. He dealt well with pulling of permit, and dealing with inspector. Pass inspection first time around And the inspector Dave even was saying good work and and seen other jobs and that he does good work. Will be using him on my next project 100%."

"I found River Valley Electric thru Home Advisor (Angi) and Pat called leaving me a message about the lead. Pat initially set an appointment time with me but was unable to make that appointment as he had several phone calls from other home owners. We setup another appointment time for the following week, which he came out and looked over our issues with the outlet in my kitchen constantly tripping when using our oven, stove and microwave but due to other scheduling issues with himself and me we weren't able to actually get the job started until 2 weeks later. 3rd appointment time and Pat arrived with all the materials to add another circuit breaker to our breaker box, putting the oven on a separate breaker. Pat did an outstanding job and was much more reasonably priced than anyone else that I contacted. If I ever need electrical work done again I wouldn't hesitate to hire Pat again"

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Seward, IL

A whole-house surge protector blocks voltage spikes from lightning, grid issues, or even large appliances before they can fry your wiring or electronics. By diverting excess current at the main panel, it shields everything from your HVAC to your phone chargers and can extend the life of pricey appliances. Homeowners in storm-prone regions or with older panels see the biggest payoff, but any home that relies on sensitive electronics benefits.

Most whole-house surge protectors work for two to three years. Low-level spikes—too small to notice—hit your panel every day and slowly wear down the internal components. Once the unit’s capacity is depleted, it can’t prevent a larger surge, so plan to replace it on schedule (or sooner if a major lightning strike occurs) to keep your electronics and HVAC equipment safe.

A surge protector begins guarding your circuits the moment an electrician snaps it into place. Whether the spike originates from a nearby lightning strike or your fridge kicking on, the protector shunts the extra current to ground before it can reach outlets or hard-wired systems, such as your AC. That instant response is why a small upfront cost can save thousands in appliance repairs.

The unit mounts on or next to your main electrical panel. Type 1 models sit on the supply side, catching outside spikes before they hit the breaker. Type 2 devices snap inside the panel and tame surges that start within the house. Either way, placement at the panel lets the protector guard every circuit at once.

Plan to swap the device every three to five years—or sooner if you upgrade your panel, add high-demand appliances, or notice flickering lights and tripped breakers. Relying on a maze of power strips is another red flag that your current setup isn’t keeping up. Replacing the surge protector at these milestones keeps your electrical system on safe footing.
