"I hired the Dunlop Brothers to (1) remove and replace damaged concrete and (2) add a drain near my detached garage. I found Mr. Jerry Dunlop to be a good communicator. The Dunlop Brothers were not inexpensive, but they were reliable and had the right skill sets and equipment. Their work was of very good quality. I am very satisfied with Dunlop Brothers and would hire them again."

"Let's face it, as consumers we hire roofers even less than we purchase a new car. And that puts us at a serious disadvantage. My experience with SHS has been absolutely SMOOTH. From the sales experience, explaining roofing and gutter options, demolition, installation, and clean up everything went as advertised. I have a 2400 sq ft ranch home, with about 40 squares of roofing, and the roof is fairly steep. To me it was no small job. SHS made it look easy. I worked with Rob Drumm in sales; but even after signing the contract, Rob continued to respond to my numerous questions and concerns. Anytime I had a question, and there were several, Robb always answered my questions in a professional manner that assured me I had hired the right company. SHS was not the lowest cost bidder. We were looking for best VALUE, and feel they delivered on every check box. Some of the highlights of what we believed were value-adds... The crew was on time and completed in the estimated time. The demolition phase was somewhat messy, but we were warned and it was not as bad as I expected. A drip edge was installed on the roof perimiter to prevent leaves and tree seeds from getting between the gutter and the wood fascia they are attached to. They double-booted the vent pipes... This extra layer of protection adds life to the rubber pipe collars. We had standard size gutters installed but commercial sized downspouts and outlets. This will reduce the likely hood of clogging. One of the big factors we used to select SHS was their established working relationship with our paint company, CertaPro painters of South Charlotte. Once the roof was completed and the old gutters were dropped, the painting crew came in and replaced rotten wood boards behind the gutters and painted the entire home. Once the painting was complete SHS sent in their crew to hang the gutters. As the homeowner I never had to coordinate the activity between the two service companies. In general, everyone involved with the project was a delight to work with and our 19 year old home now looks like new, at least on the exterior. I don't plan to outlive this roof, but if something does pop up, I would not hesitate to call Rob at SHS for any maintenance or repairs."

"Chris and his laborers were very professional. They were on time or early for the work being performed. The patio design required several days of work. They cleaned up the job site at the end of each day. When rain derailed the final day of work, Chris reported the following day to make sure the work was finished to our satisfaction."

"Alex and his crew of TJ, Quinlan and Charles came out to put in a sidewalk for my Mother-In-Law's apartment at our house and extend our driveway. Our house is on a little bit of a hill so they worked with us and came up with a plan to keep the slope of the sidewalk to a minimum for my Mother-In-Law. They did a fantastic job and cleaned up great after they were done. In looking at their work after they were done, I couldn't ask for anymore and it shows why it is best to hire a professional group like Concrete Craft."

"We selected Madewell Concrete in Charlotte, NC, after the rave reviews we saw on Google. Wow. What a major mistake. We had them pour an extension on our driveway and replace a patio in our back yard. The patio concrete was to be colored a natural earthen color and stamped in a random stone pattern. They poured on a 97-degree day and the result was a disaster since the concrete cured at too fast a rate to properly stamp it. When I complained, I was told by the sales guy to reach out to another company and pay more to seal it. I of course continued to complain, and they ultimately poured it again. At first, I was happy with it looking from a distance. Then after further inspection, I noticed they poured it several inches lower than the first pour; thus, it was several inches lower than the surrounding ground surface. Additionally, they broke a couple sprinkler heads and a drainage water outlet with their skid loader AND ran their skid loader into our whole house generator, damaging the generator cover and breaking its concrete base (which they slapped some concrete on hoping I would not notice) and shifting the entire generator several inches from its original location! The **** of it all is that they said NOTHING to me about it and simply left the job site once when they were done pouring the concrete. I reached out to the sales guy who quoted my project and found out he is no longer with the company, and I reached out to the project manager requesting he elevate it to his senior management. Apparently at this point I am being ignored despite multiple requests. I have had to pay dearly (thousands of dollars) to fix all they damaged and had to put pavers on top of the concrete to elevate it to ground level. I will add to all of this that they do not leave the job site without completely tearing up your grass and yard with their skid loader and they will not backfill the gaps they created between the concrete pour and adjacent grass. You will have at least an 18-inch-wide gap that is at least 4 inches deep that you as the homeowner will have to back fill with dirt to get everything level. I would give these folks ZERO stars if I could. They are a total disaster, and I might add unethical since they damaged several items on my property and said NOTHING to me about it and in fact tried to hide the damage!"

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Shelby, NC

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
