"They were prompt in their response and scheduling of project. Gave me multiple options, including a Silicone roof coating/restoration. Had a rain come through following the project. Held up perfectly. Very satisfied. Would contract AdvantEdge Roofing Solutions again in the future."

"There is a special way in which they do the weaving of the shingles. They have a new and special type of ridge vent; it is low profile and I can’t even tell it is there. It is new type of vent and they have been using it. They have never had any leaks and they are very happy with it. They go back and do a lot of ridge vent roofing because of the old style roofing which is leaking or either the nails have come out. The old metal type roofing come in thin foot sections but the new vent that they put on is one whole section so there are no breaks in between. I was happy with the way they did the whole job and their communication as well. They did the work in no time. They were very respectful. They cleaned up and did not leave any mess. I did not really communicate with them that much but they were very nice and friendly. They were courteous. I had to move the car out of the garage so I walked out there and asked them to move because they had parked everything on the driveway. There was no problem because they moved everything though they already had everything set up; they apologized because they did not ask first which mattered. Their quality of work was very good. They were very responsive because there was somebody who was cancelling so they called ahead to ask me if I would like them to come ahead and do the job a week ahead before schedule for which I agreed. They communication skills and responsiveness was really good. Everything was very good."

"Everything went better than expected. Price was very reasonable and work I believe was much better quality than others offered. We had back porch enclosed and screened in, they came up with variety of options. The workmanship was excellent and communication with me as the work progressed was in a timely manner, especially with a few weather delays. They followed up in a few days and came back out to inspect again and also followed up with roof repair. Roof also was inspected and repaired without the hassle of tearing up material to find the leak. Discovered flashing just needed repairing. Told crew I would call them again for future projects and repairs if needed. Would highly recommend Bear Hands Construction, LLC hands down to anyone."

"I called Middle Georgia Roofing and requested a visit to get an estimate for installing a new roof.  The owner promptly sent an employee who got measurements and provided a proposal for fixing my roof.  I asked a lot of questions and was pleased with answers provided. I needed damaged fascia replaced on the front and wanted all fascia painted before the roofing job was scheduled to begin.  The owner, Duane Hortman, provided carpenters and painter to satisfy my request. The roofing crew and owner were at my house early the morning scheduled for the roof replacement. The new roof was installed in one day and looks great! The workers were careful with my vinyl windows and hedge bushes. The workmanship and clean up was excellent. The total cost was fair and reasonable.  I will be using Middle Georgia Roofing for other projects.  The company met all my expectations.

"New installation went well. I was a little upset that only 50% was covered being that the unit was 19 years old. I'm sure that parts for something that old would be hard to find. Replacement was recommended."

"The quote was free. I removed popcorn ceilings from pretty much the whole house. Once I removed the popcorn, I ascended the ceiling down but I needed somebody to give it a coat of mud. Eric Hooks was very kind, very professional and very pleasant. But he told me when I met him that it would be around $1400-$1500 and that didn’t include the material. He called me a week later and he told me that he had misquoted. He quoted me $3500 to do a coat of mud on the ceiling and bind the ceiling. He said it probably needed a couple of coats of mud. Needless to say, the job went to the guy who did it for $750. When they spray popcorn ceiling, basically mud joins it very well. They have to skim the ceilings and they have to use some joint compound to smooth the ceiling out; otherwise the lines will be seen where the joints are. He said $3500; I think they look at me and think that I am a girl and I don’t know how much things cost. I think for $3500; I can get my whole ceiling redone with new drywall for that price. I thought it was very high for 1400 square feet; it’s not a mansion. He had wonderful reviews on Angie’s List and if he had been $1400, I would have considered him. Whoever I hired did it for $750; they did a pretty decent job, and I am happy with it and it was cheap for the job. Probably $1400 I think is what most would quote. I had a quote from somebody else who said they would do it for $1000-$1500. Eric Hooks was very nice and I am sure he would do a great job, but he was really expensive as far as what he quoted me. If he had given me a reasonable price; I am sure it would have been great and he would have done a wonderful job. He was on time and called me back a few days later. Once you find somebody that does a job that’s okay and it’s cheap, you stick with those. Given what he quoted me, I probably would not use him again in the future."

"Takes a while to get ahold of them to get in system. I found them to be fair in determining whether to make a repair or replace. Very fair and reasonable, They are clear on what is and isn’t covered."

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Smarr, GA

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
