"From start to finish, working work Greg Pass was a pleasure. We had been ignored by several other contractors who thought our job was too small to bother with, but Greg was happy to talk to us about the project, and to give us a quote. He also worked with us to make a few changes to bring the project within our budget. <br /> Our laundry room was in the former carport/shed, and before tearing the shed down (which we also hired Residential Renovations for), we hired R.R. to build a new laundry room and screen porch onto the back of our house, basically extended the footprint of the house 12 feet back. This also required moving our AC unit and moving and upgrading the electrical service to the house (which hadn't been upgraded in decades). <br /> We are so pleased with how everything turned out. The porch is beautiful, and they did a great job on the laundry room too. To save money, we elected to paint everything ourselves, but otherwise, they did all the work and subcontracting. <br /> Tony Pass, Greg's son who did all the work on site, is the nicest guy in the world, and explained everything they would be doing. He and his crew and the subcontractors were all professional, nice people who showed up exactly when they said they would, and who did exactly what they said they would do. <br /> There are always problems when doing work on old houses, and Tony took a lot of care to make sure that he was doing everything he could to make things look nice and work right. <br /> Two things that seem trivial really struck me as key to why we liked Residential Renovations so much. First, it bothers me when people who come to work on the house leave cigarette butts everywhere, but nobody from this outfit left a single butt. That was the kind of professionalism that this crew had. <br /> Second, as a woman, I hate that when contractors and other workers speak to my husband and me, they tend to ignore me the entire time, as though I'm deaf. Greg and Tony were the exact opposite. When either one of them spoke to both of us, they spoke to BOTH of us, which is a very welcome change from many experiences I've had. <br /> We will definitely be calling Greg Pass next time we need work done on the house. I'm not sure I'd want anyone else doing work for us. <br />"

"I had John's Contractor service remodel my bath after several estimates, his came in cheapest but not that cost matters if the job is done right the first time. I learned a long time ago you get what you pay for ...Well I don't deal with any companies that don't have an A rating with the BBB and this company indeed have an A rating. The entire experience exceeded my expectations, the team was very professional and caring and the job came out beautiful. I get a lot of comments on the small bath that I was embarrassed about before it was remodeled. I would highly recommend John's contractor service to anyone."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Sorrento, LA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
