"The entire experience with Patrick Davidson and Apex Roofing was the best it could possibly have been. We were pleased with every interaction we had, whether by phone, e-mail, text or in person. Patrick's price was competitive, the quality of work outstanding and the conduct of his crew was commendable. A big shout-out to Sergio and Patrick's son (Jared?) who provided on-site leadership. Clean up was extraordinary as well. Also, Sergio had to come back to install some gable vents since there was a delay in the supply chain. "Where honesty and integrity is paramount" is their motto and they lived up to it. Go with this company, you'll be glad you did."

"I am really happy with the work Richards Roofing has done. Out of 7 quotes, Richards Roofing had the best price. The crew was professional and friendly. Besides the new roof which required a tear-off, I wanted attic insulation. I asked them to do the attic insulation by going through the roof, as to not track fiberglass through the house - no problem. They quoted 12" of blown-in fiberglass; the others quoted 8 to 10". They started within a week after I contracted them. Mine is a ranch of 2900 square feet, yet they did the work in 2 days including the tear-off, attic insulation and clean-up. They cleaned up well, and even put back my gutter leaf guards. They allotted 10 plywood sheets in the price quote. They used only 4, so they refunded the cost of the unused sheets, so I was charged less than the quote. In my experience when I have had a roof replaced, the chimney leaked during the first big rain. Here we've had several big rains, snow, sleet, and high winds in the year since they installed my roof and I have had no leaks or other problems. I've recommended Richards Roofing to my friends and co-workers and would definitely hire them again."

"We had power out in 2023 for attic insulation and roof replacement, and we just had them back out to replace some windows and the back door. The process was smooth, everyone we spoke with were helpful, and the quality of the work and product speaks for itself."

"it took these guys less than 4 hours to rip off 2 layers, replace a bunch of plywood and cut in a ridge vent along with adding some other vents across the back and slap on the new shingles. Extreme Exteriors did an amazing job!!!! Give Jacob a call if you have any roofing, gutter, siding or window needs!"

"Not good in the beginning. However, we they turned on their vacuum it blew dirt and dust from previous jobs into us into our living. room causing quite a mess . They did apologize it offered us a discount on future jobs. When I called them back to service other areas in the house or have someone to call that they would handle the job that we need it done however it is November and I've not heard back from them since.

"Greg came out and did a blower test, where you seal off the house and put a large blower fan in the door to highlight leaks. He then spent almost four hours taking us around the house with an infrared camera showing us all the areas that were leaking. You could feel cold air pouring out of every door jamb, and his camera showed some very major insulation issues, including an area where the heating ducts to two bedrooms were going through completely uninsulated/ourdoor areas. He gave us a few different options, and we opted for "the works." This was a four step process that included them going into the attic and sealing many areas, then pumping 60 bales of cellulose insulation into the attic to bring it from less than R19 to R60. Then they used spray foam in the basement to seal the entire rim joist. They also put special sealed domes around all of our recessed lights. Finally, they took part of our porch down, stuffed insulation everywhere, spray foamed, and reassembled everything perfectly. The result was exceptional! The house used to feel drafty and cold, even at 71 degrees. Now it feels warm and toasty as soon as you walk in. Greg also came back at the end and did another blower test, and was able to get us $750 in Consumer's Energy rebates because they cut air loss down by 50%, added so much insulation, and a few other factors. Lastly, even the office staff was super helpful. When I called, they knew who I was and what job I was calling about based on a first name. There wasn't any "please wait and I'll transfer you" or anything like that. Fantastic service! If you need insulation pick Blanket Insulation!"

"We are very pleased with the job Roofman did on our home. In one day they tore off old roof and replaced it. They were promt, personable and professional. They were careful not to damage our gardens and lawn. Every bit of debris was cleaned up at the end of the day. We are extremely satisfied with our new roof. We have had several neighbors favorably comment on it as well. We love our updated sunroom - no more leaky skylights! We highly recommend Roofman (855-976-6362) for your next roofing project."

"We had some shingles that had blown off on the back bay of our house that we needed repaired. I requested a quote from 6 companies that I found on Angies List, the majority I never heard from. Derek, the owner of Prime Square Construction, contacted me almost immediately and gave me a quote based on the photo I sent. He said he could be out the next day to do the work. He was timely, professional and honest. I could tell that he is very passionate about his work. In addition to the repair of the shingles on the back bay, Derek inspected the entire roof and repaired a cap that had a crack in it, this was above and beyond. I would definitely recommend Prime Square Construction for your roofing needs."

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Southfield, MI

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
