"Mike took the time to explain to me the work he would do; no question on my part was too much. I had a big concern about the mismatched slate on my roof. Because of the age of the roof and the natural fading that has taken placed, I questioned finding the right Vermont slate. Mike assured me that he could match my Vermont slate, and he did. I now have a uniform colored roof. Mike and Chris were on time and worked in a very professional manner. In addition, as he and Chris did the work, when he saw something else that needed a bit of attention, they took care of it. In all 37+ slates were addressed. Mike will be the person I call to maintain my roof."

"After our ceiling fell down from a leak in the roof, we had to find someone who could fix the giant hole in the living room as if it never happened, which proved very tricky since the ceiling was plaster with a special type of texturing. After searching high and low for top notch plasterers, we found Bob's number and gave him a call. Bob came out quickly and was able to put our mind at ease about making the repairs and gave a great timeline and quote for getting the work done. When the work was done, we truly couldn't tell there was ever a hole in the ceiling! Bob and his team did an excellent job repairing everything and matching the texture to the surrounding area, we couldn't be happier! They were all so courteous and did a great job making sure everything was covered up before they started and cleaned up so well afterwards, it was as if no one was there (and no hole)! If we ever have any plastering needs in the future, we would call Bob in a heartbeat."

"Everything went great from initial estimate through cleanup! This company was referred to me by a friend whose metal roof they had installed. Everything they did was professional, courteous & on time from beginning to end. The estimate was honest, accommodating and low pressure, the office was friendly, the workers were prompt & worked hard. Everyone was super easy to work with. Plus they did the work that some others weren’t interested in looking at bc it is a shared garage."

"This was a fantastic experience. My initial call for a bid was responded to very quickly. The work did take longer than initially planned, but this was because the prep needed was pretty intensive. Communication was easy and the work faultless. Adaptations that hat to be made because of a 100+ year old house were easily and fairly discussed and negotiated. I was so comfortable with them right away, they had a key to the house. The only possible reason I would not want to recommend them, is that you will read this and want to hire them.... and then I will have trouble getting scheduled with the rest of my projects! They use only Sherwin Williams, which should tell you their professionalism and goal to make the completed project last a long time."

"B&K Roofing turned an otherwise stressful situation into a very positive experience. They provided an honest estimate of the damage to my roof and attic and were very fair in their pricing. They were cordial and professional and went above and beyond what was expected of them. I would definitely hire them again. Thanks, again, B&K!"

"Very well! Andrew the owner & his associates completed the job in two visits. The first was to power wash the cedar porch ceiling and decking/ railings which took about 2 1/2 hrs. Two days later (rain in forecast) they were able to polyurethane the ceiling & stain the rest in about 8 hrs. It turned out great and was long overdue."

"UPDATE: Work on my home completed 08/19. Was guaranteed there would be no further foundation leaks. New small front deck and repair of sil plate. 6700.00 plus. Early October my handyman began to replace the drywall damage. He discovered water was still coming in. Message to Mr Everett’s. Said he would come out and check it out. Message from tenant 10/31 that water was coming in through a light fixture. Mr Everett still hasn’t showed up. Initial message was 10/6. So last night I sent him another message that I was changing my glowing review of his company and submitting a BBB complaint. He responded saying he would pencil me in for Sunday. He was paid 1/3 before work began. 1/3 at commencement and the final 1/3 on completion. Same as the new roof. I’m trying to sell the home and I don’t need any further issues pertaining to water. 2 years ago I paid another company 4K for interior French drain that did absolutely nothing to fix the issue. Except to fill pockets of the contractor. I live out of state so keeping up with theses fools is a bit difficult. After contacting several other contractors that promised to show up and didn’t, I found Derek on Angie’s list. He came the next day. Had one other estimate. Derek’s estimate was far lower than than the other guy. Living out of state makes finding the right person to do work on a rental property challenging. Work was completed. He actually found the source of the water leak in my basement 2 years ago I paid 4 k for waterproofing that was really only water diversion. Plus another 1 k for a radon system that was likely caused by digging up the inside of my basement to install the interior French drain. Wasted money. I have hired him again to finally repair the problem. I have already referred Derek to a friend in Pittsburgh for roofing."

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Southwest, PA

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
