"I received 3-5 quotes (and a half-quotes) and schedules from various asphalt pavement installers - Hardrock was the highest quote offered but only by $1000 or so including the special sealing option which no one else offered. You really need to have pavement done right the first time, otherwise the 'rip-up' to fix it later on alone will cost just as much as the original job. My $12k driveway job was for ~150' single lane and a big driveway pad off the house, included 4"-6" of compacted QB gravel base then 3"-4" of I5 asphalt, then included the $2000 special chemical seal coating treatment that can only be done right after laying hot asphalt and avoids the need for bi-yearly sealing for the first 7-10 years. From my research, this design and plan exceeded what most people do for a residential driveway. The 'actual' laying of foundation materials and the pavement from what I witnessed appeared more than what was contracted, and has held up perfectly for the first year so far. No sinking or cracking - there are only a few rock-pebble pops over the entire driveway. Ideally, if you can avoid using the driveway for a full month after install - that will reduce scuffs from deliveries and visitors as the pavement needs about a month or more (actually months through the hot summer) to fully set-in and cure. The owner was present and working the job for about 2/3 of the day, and overall the team of 8-10 guys did a great job. Pavement was laid while it was sunny. I can recommend Hardrock for those who want a strong driveway done right"

"This review is long overdue. I contacted Sealpro Mahwah because I have seen their work in several driveways in the neighborhood. I can literally see why they are recommended. Their work looked very good on every driveway that i saw. I contacted the business and response time was very good. I spoke w Lou and he was upfront, honest and very nice. We discussed work that needed to be done- sealcoating and crack fills. We were able to negotiate the quote. I admit the quote was not the lowest of the three bids I received from companies BUT Lou seemed the most upfront of what we could expect. I was comfortable on price we landed on and very happy I went with SealPro. I have recommended to my neighbors and would use them again. Thank you to Lou, his crew and everybody at SealPro."

"Steve showed up when promised for estimate and provided a very competitive price for a fairly large driveway. Although it is late in the season work was scheduled the next week. Steve and his crew of 4-5 workers showed up when promised and worked a full day for the rip out cleaning up nicely afterwards. They laid down the gravel next and let it set about a week. Again they returned punctually as promised and laid down the new asphalt in a couple of hours. They paid a lot of attention to detail and final result. Would highly recommend."

"If you need a little courage to make a decision on whether to do your project and with whom, Gappsi Inc. should be on the top of your list! This is a company that does not cut corners. They do the project with pride for whoever you may be. They stand by their quality ... I can vouch for that! They are not cheap but that is not what you want. Think Quality and that is what you get with Gappsi."

"Exercise extreme caution.  Owner Stewart has explosive bad temper.  Also, he and his brother illegally trespassed and also attempted to bully me (woman home alone).     At end of work day, they demanded payment.  I indicated numerous problems with the work and a heated argument ensued.   I advised them I was done talking to them and asked them to leave, and retreated into garage.  Both followed me into garage, refused to leave despite my repeated statements that they were TRESPASSING, and continued to DEMAND PAYMENT.   I paid them to get them out of our lives.   POLICE HAD TO POST CAR IN FRONT OF OUR HOUSE.  After we sent photos of leaking into garage, Owner Stewart insisted on coming to house, when no responsible adults were home, to prove that there was no problems and insisted he would get babysitter to help him with access.  He repeatedly refused to reschedule time and would not accept no.  Police had to post a car in front of our house and to warn him to stay away from us.  We now have to wet vac several inches of water that leak all the way into middle of garage whenever it rains even a little heavy (much worse leaking than before).   I met them for first time when they showed up ready to work. I relied on Angies List good reviews and hired them even though I would not be home.  All other companies advised that gravel would need to be removed to level driveway properly.  T. Stewart paved over what was there – creating a driveway that is approx.. 3 inches higher than surrounding land and garage floor.   We can no longer roll things out of garage; all have to be lifted over the edge – garbage cans, heavy snow blower, bicycles.  Pavers look terrible and are tripping hazards, as they were crookedly wedged along lip of driveway to hold taller asphalt in place.  Crew was polite, but entered garage illegally and used tools/property w/o permission, breaking a new garden tool.   Heavy and light debris left on our and neighbor’s property.  Edges of driveway are crooked and sloppy in many places; they never sought my final approval of lines before paving, as they promised."

"I use Ed Costello every year to seal coat my driveway. He fills any small cracks and then applies an oil based sealer with a sprayer. Neat, clean, professional and has been in the business for over 40 years. He’s seal coated my driveway 5 times over the last 10 years and I’ve not had a single issue with his work. My 20 year old driveway still looks great! Anyone complaining about tire marks or uncured sealer is because they drove on it before it was fully dried. Never had an issue. Highly recommended"

FAQs for asphalt paving installation projects in Stewartsville, NJ

Most driveways wrap up in roughly a week. Allow two to three days for installation, followed by an additional two to three days for the surface to cure. Concrete and asphalt follow this timeline, whereas a gravel job often finishes more quickly. Laying out the schedule upfront makes it easier to plan your week and your budget.

Sealer prevents water, salt, and UV rays from damaging the surface. Apply a fresh coat every one to three years, and you’ll slow down the growth of cracks, avoid pricey repairs, and keep the driveway looking sharp. A local professional can handle the job efficiently and ensure even coverage.

Material is the significant driver when it comes to the lifespan of a driveway. Asphalt stays strong for about 20 years, concrete lasts 30 to 40 years, and paver stones can last 50 to 100 years because you can swap out damaged bricks. With regular top-ups, a gravel drive can also reach the century mark. Knowing these timelines helps you map out long-term maintenance and replacement costs.

Repaving strips everything down and starts fresh, letting you change the layout or improve drainage before pouring new material. Resurfacing, on the other hand, adds a top layer over a solid base, giving you a facelift without the need for a complete demolition. Go with repaving when the base is failing; choose resurfacing when the structure is sound and you just need a new surface.
