"William and his team did a fantastic job upgrading our meter panel. They took care of all the permits and had the job done on time and on schedule. They were extremely communicative throughout the entire process and I would use them for all electrical services in the future."

"My previous electrician had sadly done a terrible job performing my panel upgrade from 100a to 200a. Also, the permitting stages were not followed and I was unfortunately not compliant because of it. After shopping around for many electricians, I eventually met Mike and knew he was the guy that I was going to work with. Mike explained every detail one step at a time. My project was a large project since I was to not only rewire my 200amp panel, we had to fix grounding, water bonding, and also Trench 4 feet deep for SDGE to upgrade our line from 100a to 200a as well. This was a long and stressful process that became super easy because of the effort and work put in by Mike and his team. Mike was here for all of the permitting stages whenever the city or SDGE was here, so that he could answer all their questions and concerns directly. Mike will continue being my electrician from now on. I highly suggest MIke and his team for all of your electrician needs. They are very quick to answer phone calls, text messages, explain all processes and next steps. Super fortunate to have Mike on my home improvement team."

"From the beginning, the experience with Raymond was fantastic. He asked me for pictures of the current electrical panel, and with some additional information, he was able to provide an all-inclusive quote. He handled the permits and coordinated between the city and the power company. He was always very responsive and proactive. His team communicated clearly and was focused on getting every detail done right. I would hire Raymond in a heartbeat for any/all electrical work."

"I called them about an electrical panel upgrade and they responded immediately. They looked at some pictures and heard our situation, did their calculations, and it turns out that we didn't need an electrical panel upgrade. Other companies might have done the calculations but gone along with us thinking we needed work done to get some business, but these guys were honest and upfront and ended up saving us a good amount of money."

"Another company doing some contract work for us told us we needed a new panel box and wiring to get up to code and to fix our power problem to the outside outlets and fixtures. They proposed a contract for $39k! I said no. I called up Excel based on the reviews here. Tom answered the phone himself, and when I explained the problem he tried to solve it over the phone (no charge) by having me trip the circuit breakers and gfi's. I told him we had already done this... and we had. Multiple times. So Tom sent out a tech that day, and gave me a 2-hour time window. The tech arrived well within the window. Turns out it was a GFI, hidden in a corner of the garage where no one had ever thought to look. But the tech found it, because even though he couldn't see it, he said he knew it had to be there. Helped me move an old arcade machine out of the way, and there it was. The icing on the cake is, he said our panel box was up to code. Well worth the $140 service charge (plus $20 to replace the GFI) for that information! I will definitely call Excel again, and definitely NOT the other company (who will also be getting a very different review)."

"We needed a NEMA 14-50 EV charger installed outdoors for an electric car, and got 3 quotes from Angie's List. Based on the 3 bids, it seemed certain we'd need a subpanel breaker box installed as our main breaker box was full and there were no empty slots to assign to the EV charger. However, only Tommy from Fairway offered up a potential solution within the existing breaker box, if they were able to source a hard to find quad breaker. It seemed unlikely, but would save a lot of hours (new box install / wiring under the house) and money. Sure enough, he source the part and made it happen. On top of that, they were professional and easy to work with. Highly recommend!"

"Billy at Mattiace Electric did an excellent job changing out an old ceiling fan in my patio for a new one, and changing out electric fixtures in my kitchen and bathroom. He was on time and the job was finished in less than 2 hours. I highly recommend Mattiace Electric and will use them again if I have another electric project that needs to get done."

"The electricians came just over an hour from the first call, they walked through the building and found what the issue was. While changing out the bulbs they also found that the old wiring was not done correctly. They were able to able to figure out the wiring, correct it and install the lights properly. They were prompt, courteous."

"My dad actually found Ryan working on our neighbor’s electrical panel and poached him! I needed a panel upgrade, and Ryan completed the work efficiently and very well. He was very responsive and thorough with his work. He took the time to explain everything and was a pleasure to work with. He made the entire process so easy. Definitely helps to have a licensed electrician who can work directly with SCE and pull permits from the city. 10/10 recommend. THANK YOU, RYAN!"

"Joe's Electric returned my care within minutes of me contacting them. I had a technician in my home in 1.5 hrs. Who quickly identified and fixed the problem within 35-45 minutes. They saved me from losing a whole day of work and it was worth the cost vs loss I would have incurred."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Sunset Beach, CA

While homeowners with substantial electrical knowledge might technically attempt a subpanel installation, most local building departments require permits and inspections for this type of work. Professional electricians understand local code requirements, can obtain necessary permits, and ensure the installation meets safety standards. Given the significant safety risks associated with incorrect electrical work, most homeowners benefit from hiring a licensed professional.

A standard subpanel installation takes an average of four to eight hours. This timeframe may extend if you're installing multiple subpanels or adding specialized circuits like those for spa equipment. Factors such as difficult access points, complex wiring paths, or permit processing times can also affect the overall project duration.

Adding a subpanel doesn't directly reduce electricity consumption or lower your utility bills. A subpanel simply redistributes power from your main panel to additional circuits. However, organizing your electrical system more efficiently may help prevent overloaded circuits and the associated problems. For actual cost savings, consider energy-efficient appliances and lighting instead.

The appropriate subpanel size depends on your specific electrical requirements. Consider the number and type of devices you'll be powering, potential future needs, and the capacity of your main electrical panel. An electrician can perform a load calculation to determine the most suitable amperage rating for your situation, ensuring you have adequate power without overpaying for unnecessary capacity.

A main electrical panel connects directly to your utility's power supply and contains your home's primary service disconnect. It distributes electricity throughout your entire house. A subpanel, by contrast, receives power from the main panel and redistributes it to a specific area of your home. Think of the main panel as the primary distribution point and the subpanel as a secondary branch that extends your electrical system's reach.

While electrical upgrades aren't as immediately visible as kitchen or bathroom renovations, they can contribute to your home's functionality and safety. Prospective buyers often appreciate updated electrical systems that can accommodate modern power demands. A properly installed subpanel that provides additional capacity for workshops, home offices, or future expansions could be an attractive feature for certain buyers, though the direct impact on home value varies by market.
