"Based on his recommendations, I decided the basement problems were more than I wanted to deal with in this house. However, Carl performed this service at NO COST to me, based on the promise that I would contract him for the job, should I decide to go ahead with the purchase. <br />"

"He arrived on time and with everything he needed.  He figured out a clever way to make the repair without having more extensive work because of the "cottage cheese" ceilings.  He removed the cabinets, which were not of good quality, boxed in the space between kitchen and living room, replaced the cabinets and added moldings to finish the job nicely.  He even made new moldings for the cabinets to replace pieces that were broken/missing.  <br> <br>He also repaired the seal on the toilet upstairs which had leaked and caused the damage to the kitchen ceiling below.  <br> <br>He is so careful, and conscientious about doing the work properly.  Not a slip-shod bone in his body!  I can whole-heartedly recommend him.  I will certainly be using him again for other projects. <br> <br> <br>"

"Everything went very well. I have used Eddy at my home and a rental property I own. He is an all around repairman who has replaced windows, did plumbing, carpentry and masonry work for me. He shows up on time and completes the work in a timely manner. He is very professional and always has a fair price. I highly recommend him."

"These guys were great. We had no idea what we would find once the excavator uncovered the roof, but we knew it was raining in the bathroom and that when we removed the sheetrock, there was significant structural damage to the roof and supporting beams. Mike identified the problem, located all of the leaks and damage caused by the leaks, removed all of the rotten wood and replaced it with structural soundness in mind, sistering the beams where necessary and sealing all of the seams in the rubber membrane. He discovered a second area of damage, which had not been obvious and repaired that as well. He and his team were focused, diligent and highly competent. He has even stopped by on his own time to check on the work and make sure that there were no more leaks. I would not hesitate to recommend him to any of my friends. <br />"

"I think he also does property management but we use him for snow removal. He charges by the inch of snow. If we get 5 inches and he has to come out 3 times, he only charges that one time. A lot of places charge every time they come out and if it snows all day, they have to come 3 or 4 times. He is reliable and does an excellent job. He plows and we don't have to shovel out after. He gets right up to the garage and we don't have to shovel after he leaves. We will use him again."

"Angie's list won't let me submit information for work peformed at two different locations ina similar time frame so I will describe it here. <br /> The window job was at my home. <br /> After the foreman came out to my house to measure and view the rooms that needed replacement windows, I was provided with an email quote of $498 each for two windows "installed." I sent a deposit check on 2/17. I was told that the install would begin on May 5, but work did not start until May 15. I was also told it would take a few hours during the morning. It ended up taking two full days (making me miss work) and the job was still was not done. It was clear that the carpenter who was sent out was in over his head. It seemed to me after the first day that they were running the risk of losing money so I offered to forgo the second window for which no installation had even begun. The foreman came out himself and said no they wanted to finish the job and be professional about it. <br /> After two full days the carpenter was almsot finished with the job. He cleaned up the area very nicely but left a pile of construction debris in my driveway. The reason the job wasn't finished was that the original trim could not be re-used so I was left with wood trim to stain and paint and wait for someone to come out and finish the job. It wast finished on May 20. The quality of the work was excellent. <br /> When I got the bill I was surprised to see a cost overrun of 36 &. The quote was for $498 installed, but the final bill was $1355.26. I complained to the foreman who had quoted the job and he said he would put it right. The office worker who sends out the bills saw things differently and said that since they couldn't reuse the casings, they added the extra charge. I do not understand why a professional cannot anticipate this. They also charged me for extra hardware because they had ordered thw wrong color. <br /> The siding job was at a different property. I was quoted $2600 for one large exterior wall. I sent a deposit check on 3/1 and was told they would begin on May 12. By May 14 they hadn't started and I heard nothing despite asking for updates. June 11 I got an email asking if I could meet the foreman at the worksite the following day. As I was headed out on a business trip I could not. The workers showed up anyway and gave my property manager a hard time because he refused to let them enter a tenant's apartment so they could use the tenant's electricity without consent.By the time I got there three days later they had a problem getting an elecrictian to come out on short notice to remove the meters so I had to call my electrician to help out. I am still finding little piece of trim on the lawn and the identifying numbers for the fuel oil fill tubes were replaced incorrectly. The total bill came to $4900 ($2600 + $2300) which was reasonable but with $750 tacked on because the window trim was not included in the original quote. I had specifically mentioned the need to window trim when I had asked for the quote. The quality of the work was excellent. <br /> I received the bill on July 1 and iniitated online payment from my bank within 14 days. Home Partners does not accept transfers so the bank has to send a paper check. Home Partners was quick to send a "nag" email on July 16 reminding me about the invoice for $5650. <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Thetford-hill, VT

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
