"We had a residential rear flatroof leaking into our bedroom through three attempts at repairs by other providers. Internet searches led me to contact APR Roofers and its Dave Miller, who got someone (Jose) to look at the roof within a few days, even during a week this October of storms that had everyone looking for help. Jose found what he believed was the problem (a subtle one, involving a barrier under the adjoining pitched shingled roof), got back to it promptly before the next rain, patched anything else that looked questionable, and now after some 45 hours of steady rain, no leak! Assuming it's fixed, even for wind-driven rain, we're delighted with APR. Communication was great, Jose is a skilled, personable worker, and Dave even called to ask if the leak was fixed, though with this type of repair (rather than new roof) there's no guarantee. Price seemed fair enough for the nature of the problem, skills, bonded workmen, materials, and need to have it done quickly."

"Tim replaced our fascia a couple of years ago, so I asked for another quote for full roof replacement and installing a bath vent in the roof. The quote was one of the lowest using a good quality shingle. I must of asked at the right time because we were able to schedule the roof replacment within the week. Tim was very patient as we went back and forth with shingle colors. The work went very smooth. Because of the pitch of the roof, it took a day longer than expected. The roof looks excellent. His team cleaned ok, there were some big pieces, but Tim helped clean the metal nails and staples on the final inspection. It was a very good experience."

FAQs for natural slate roofing repair projects in Thornton, IL

If more than 30% of your slate roof is damaged, it's time to consider a full replacement. This will prevent further deterioration and avoid costly recurring repairs. A professional slate inspection (costing between $130 and $360) can confirm whether repairs are sufficient or if a full roof replacement is the better option.

A slate roof can last anywhere from 60 to 150 years, depending on factors like installation quality, regular maintenance and repairs, and local weather conditions. Compared to materials like clay and concrete, which often last around 50 years, a well-maintained slate roof offers superior longevity, durability, and long-lasting aesthetic appeal.

Yes, you can use temporary patch solutions, such as roofing cement or patchwork, to provide immediate relief for minor leaks or underlayment issues observed from inside your home. However, these provisional fixes do not replace the need for a permanent, professional exterior repair, which is necessary to ensure the long-term integrity and weather resistance of your slate roof.
