"Since my roof is 20+ years old, I have a Home Confidence Plan with Arocon, which includes two roof inspections (tune-ups) per year. Preston and Keith were the technicians that performed this service on July 27, 2022. I can only say positive things about these technicians. They were very thorough, making some minor repairs (exposed nails). They took photos of the roof, which I received via email soon after the visit. Preston is very professional and knowledgeable, and clearly explained what the issues are with my roof and its overall condition. I have had this service with Arocon for a couple of years and I derive much peace of mind in maintaining my roof with Arocon until I replace it. Based on my experience with Arocon, I will be very inclined to hire this company to replace my existing roof when the time comes. Susie Setser"

"RIBA construction was recommended by one of my neighbors. I initially started with them by replacing my old cedar shake roof with new architectural asphalt shingle (32 squares) with three new skylights. From the very start, the sales and contract process with Ryan was open and honest. They genuinely wanted to get the right roof solution versus just making another sale. The communication through the process from the back-office with Jerry and Yolanda was also superb. The roof and skylights were ultimately installed and the RIBA Construction diligently followed through until all work was completed. As a result of this great experience, shortly thereafter I selected RIBA Construction to complete a number of other projects (all completed concurrently with diligent coordination): - Windows and Sliding Doors --> replaced forty (40) old wood windows with new vinyl casement windows - Siding --> replaced (20 squares) of engineered wood with new vinyl siding - Capping --> All windows, doors, and trim capped with aluminum and vinyl soffit vents - Gutters --> installed 300+ feet of new gutters and downspouts While no project goes perfectly, everyone at RIBA Construction really cares about doing the right thing and made everything the way it should be without hesitation. In the end, the exterior of my home has been completely renovated and I now have a virtually maintenance-free exterior. I'm very happy with the appearance and functionality as well as the value of all services. If you are looking for a company you can trust to provide an honest assessment, strong communication, and skilled installers, RIBA Construction is a great option. I highly recommend and will certainly hire them again for future projects."

"Their work was excellent and timely. They took the time to explain the roofing process clearly to a complete novice. The same can be said for each time I hired Home Matters over the past few years and I will definitely hire them again in future."

"Keith Roofing is a great company to work with from beginning to end of any roofing project. Our flat roof project began with an initial assessment and estimate that included preliminary photos and a description of the how and why of the work to be done. Hugh is an exceptional communicator and I really appreciated his fair assessments and explanations of his work. He went the extra mile to earn our trust. Next, we were promptly scheduled for a few days later. Once underway, the work was completed in a timely and professional manner. Hugh took detailed photos to show the quality of the work and again explain exactly what had been done and why. Afterwards we were left with a high quality repair, a clean work site, and the piece of mind of a job well done. Keith Roofing takes pride in doing things the right way and the results show. They are my go to for all things roofing."

"These guys are the best! They seriously care about their customers and really strive to make sure they deliver a great product. They were on time, quick, and clean. My new roof looks fantastic, and we are really glad we went with this local company. Buying a roof is not a "fun" expense, but I really feel like we got our money's worth: a quality new roof in 1 day, and then new trim capping the next day. They even installed new bathroom exhaust vents and HVAC exhausts. Our house looks brand new. You might get a cheaper rate elsewhere, but these guys do not skimp on quality of product, 50-year warranty, or craftsmanship. They even come back to inspect and follow up to make sure we are completely happy with the services provided! Talk about great customer service! The whole experience was so easy. The salesman/inspector was not pushy, and provided a very reasonable quote for what we needed. They also replaced all our rotted wood in the roof/trim."

"Overall the installation went well except the "bowing" in the portion of the roof over the garage. We contacted Power on several occasions, but we haven't received a proper response yet. Below is the email we sent to Power. Power did acknowledge receiving the email, but nothing has happen so far. Email: You replaced our roof April 23, 2022 – project number 35-74502. We’re pleased with the replacement except for the portion over the garage…it’s bowing. Below, is our account of the events detailing how we have tried to resolve this issue. March 26, we met with sales team, Chris Pierson and Christy. We were assured that the bowing over the garage would be addressed and corrected since we were getting a brand-new roof, down to the decking/framing. The replacement should resolve this issue unless it’s structural. Brandon, project manager came out March 30 to check the readiness of the installation; to verify the frame could support the new roof. During the appointment, he mentioned that he would be on site the day of install. The roof was replaced on April 23rd. No on-site manager ever came on site, the lead guy of the work crew was not an effective communicator. We engage beyond the one time he asked for an extension cord. I called POWER and left a message with Chris Pierson that same day after the crew left to express my dissatisfaction with the roof over the garage. POWER came out to inspect/QA the project at completion (the roof) on April 25th, I believe his name was Zach. We pointed out the concaved roof on the garage. He stated that portion may be a structural issue and Power could not address that. I asked him how much would it cost to replace it? He thought about it for a minute or so, then stated it could be replaced, but it would be “redo” and he quoted us a price of approx. $8900. He proceeded to say that he could knock it down to about $7800 if we added an additional project to replace the house trim. This is when he mentioned that they have company meetings on Tuesdays in the morning and he was sure this project would be discussed. He acknowledged that POWER’s communication could have been better (better details in the project notes). We waited few days thinking that someone from POWER would reach out and when that didn’t happen, we called Chris Pierson (the POWER sales guy) on April 28th. During this call, Chris scheduled another QA/follow up appointment for May 9th at 10:00am; he said Dylan, a service manager would come out. On May 9th no one showed up. About 10:20am, we called POWER only to find out that we did not have an appointment for that day. We were not the appointment list. We then rescheduled for 10am the next day, not even 10 minutes later POWER called back to inform us that unfortunately they were not going to be able to make it because of some staff meeting. I recall asking “is the meeting all day”. That’s when we were told that the next available date was June 16th; feeling like we had no choice we accepted the June 16th date at 6pm to allow both of us to be present for the meeting. Upset and feeling like we were about to get the runaround, we placed a call to GreenSky (financing team) to inform them of the matter since loan was activated and payments would begin soon. After sharing the situation with the GreenSky rep, she took notes, and we submitted a complaint because again we felt like we were about to get the run around. On June 12th, we had a call with the assigned GreenSky caseworker. He advised that we should continue to try and resolve the matter with POWER. On June 16th around 1:50pm, I received an apologetic call from Terry, apologizing for being late, that his prior appointment ran over, he was out in the sticks and phone reception was not all that great. I mentioned that our appointment wasn’t until 6pm as so my husband could be home. I was told that I must be mistaken because they don’t make appointments after 6pm, his latest appointment would be around 4:00pm. He said that my husband really didn’t need to present, it would be a quick look and since he was in the area. He asked for a summary of the situation; I gave him the run down. He asked if I could send him a few pictures, which I texted him a few of the garage roof. He said he got the jest of it. He apologized and asked what could they do… we said that we would be open to a knocking something off the price or repairing the area. He said let me call my office. He called us back to say that someone from senior management would be calling us to try and resolve this that evening of June 16th, but still haven’t heard from him or POWER."

"This is our second great experience with Exterior Medics. We had them do a major wood siding replacement project a couple years ago so when we needed roof repairs done, we knew they were a good company to work with. We were wondering whether there would be issues with getting work done during the Coronavirus shutdown or how they would handle it. The sale consultant set the tone early - no contact during the inspection process, Zoom to walk through the assessment and proposal, and no impact on the scheduling overall. They were trustworthy in providing assessments and estimates for different levels of work - a set of repairs absolutely needed to fix a leak, a set of repairs for other apparent damage, and a set of repairs to prevent future issues. We ended up doing a full roof replacement, a chimney repair, and gutter replacement. I am not going to say it was cheap - but it was a good value considering the scale of the job. We needed a custom skylight, which did lead to some delays, but Exterior Medics kept in touch regarding timeframes and were super helpful (and apologetic, although it was out of their control). Once the skylight was in, the scheduling was very fast. The job would take 3 days - one for delivery and the masonry work, one for the roof replacement, and one for the gutters. Even as bad weather threatened, they didn't panic and as the forecast turned out better than expected, they held to the schedule. The team worked VERY hard while onsite - not only did they work fast, but they were consistently cleaning up debris during the whole job. They also did multiple sweeps with magnets to get any screws and roofing nails. The job was completed exactly when expected despite some other repairs being required during the job. Overall very satisfied with the quality and timeliness of the work - it was exactly what we expected from past work they have done for us. We definitely intend to use them on future projects."

"<p>10/13/15 Final update: We never heard back after that phone call but we came home one day and had all new hedges across the front of our house.  I thought it was a bit strange that they didn't contact us at all but they did keep their word and replace the dead bushes.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>9/18/15  Update #2.  Received a call this morning (due to the below update??) More insistence that the plants died from lack of watering which  of course was argued because we did try to take care of these plants.  When my husband pointed out that we could go down the street to a very reputable nursery and purchase plants that are guaranteed for a year, no questions asked, he was told the company would replace the 9 plants but this would be the only time.  Fair enough.  We'll see how long it takes and what the final result is.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> 9/17/15 I need to add to the below original review.  I called last week to talk to someone because 9 of the 24 plants have died.  I was simply asking what could have happened or if there was anything we could do since these had been planted only 3 months prior. I was told someone would call me back later that day but I heard nothing.  I called back the next day and my call was returned.  The person I spoke with said he would come out Tuesday of this week to take a look.  My husband waited but didn't see or hear anyone all day.  My husband called on Wednesday and was told someone would come by on Thursday at 2:30.  My husband  went out for a while in the morning and during that time someone called and left a voicemail saying they had come out "the other day" and determined the plants had died due to lack of watering.  I do understand that there is a bit of drought right now however as I stated 9 of 24 plants have died.  Aside from the fact that I know the plants have been regularly watered I believe that If it were lack of watering some of the other plants would also have died if not all of them.  2 plants right in the middle of the 9 are surviving fine.  I wasn't asking them to replace the plants for free or anything, as a matter of fact we never even really had an opportunity to discuss anything regarding what the company or we could do.  I felt that  since we weren't new customers or asking for some service for which they were sure they would make money that we simply got blown off.  I know things happen but these plants lasted only 3 months.  I would have expected more and I was even more put off by the attitude.  Previously my husband and I had talked about possibly having this company do some other work but I am extremely doubtful that we will call them for anything else now.</p> <p>6/3/15 We purchased an Angie's List Big Deal for a landscaping makeover.  We were contacted immediately to set up an appointment.  Someone came to our house and assessed what we wanted to have done which was to remake a garden area across the front and down the side of our house.  We were emailed a very detailed proposed plan.  We called to ask a few questions and set up a time for the work to be done.  The morning the work was supposed to be done we received a call that due to weather issues it would have to postponed a day.  The following day workers arrived and completed all work.  They cleaned out the existing area and removed dead shrubbery, landscaping cloth, mulch etc. then planted new shrubbery, rose bushes and other plants in a very appealing design.  I had several azaleas that I wanted to keep and they managed to move these and include them in the project.  New mulch was placed in the area as well as another area that hadn't been discussed but needed the update. We were very pleased with the work and our overall experience. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> </p>"

FAQs for wood shake or composite roofing installation and replacement projects in Upper Marlboro, MD

Cedar shakes and wood shingles might seem similar, but they have some important differences. Cedar shakes are hand-split, giving them a unique, textured appearance that adds rustic charm to your roof. They're great for homeowners who want a distinctive look. Wood shingles, conversely, are machine-made, providing a smooth, uniform appearance for a more modern look. Shakes tend to be more expensive due to the craftsmanship involved but offer exceptional beauty and resilience.

A well-maintained cedar shake roof can last up to 60 years. However, factors like severe weather and improper ventilation can reduce its lifespan. You should consider replacing your roof if you notice persistent leaks, visible water damage, curling or splitting shakes, moss growth, rot, or missing shakes. Regular inspections can help you determine when it's time for a replacement.

When hiring a roofing contractor for your cedar shake roof, asking the right questions is important. Make sure they are fully certified and have extensive experience with cedar installations. Verify that their team is licensed, bonded, and insured. Ask for details about the materials they use, such as the type of underlayment and fasteners, and how they ensure proper ventilation. Getting multiple written estimates can help you compare options and choose a contractor who offers quality workmanship at a fair price.
