Reviews of Virginia Beach Bathroom Remodelers

Project: Remodel a Bathroom
Virginia Beach, VA

We were told they do not do floors. And we wished we had painted first. We had to buy the vanity and medicine cabinet ourselves. We could not find a medicine cabinet with a light, so we bought a separate cabinet with a separate light, and then had to hire an electrician to install those as the Bath Planet worker was not an electrician (but he would have installed a lighted medicine cabinet). Despite them not installing the lighted medicine cabinet, which was in the contract, they would not refund any of the charges per Mike. They would not install simple towel racks -- "not in the contract." So be aware of what you need and want upfront and get it in the contract. The shower stall work looks great. They did come back to adjust a plumbing issue. Another worker did the pocket door and it was evident by the plaster work that he was less experienced. He brought no hardware for opening or closing the door. Overall we are glad for the remodel but we did learn much.

I was called by three Service Magic companies and instantly found a connection with Quality Advantage. Chris called me and set up a time for someone to come estimate my project. I was so impressed with Bryan that I hired them to complete my project. The installers were clean and professional, and the ofice followed up afterwards to make sure I was happy. I would definitely use them again, the work looks great!

Ideas & Inspiration from Virginia Beach Addition & Remodeling Contractors

Virginia Beach Bathroom Remodels

The bathroom may not be a central hub of a household, but it is an incredibly important and often-used room. This is one of the reasons that a remodeled bathroom offers homeowners one of the highest returns of all home improvement projects. In Virginia Beach, VA, homeowners understand this important connection between new bathrooms and home value and, as a result, have a variety of options when it comes to their own project.

Prominent Neighborhoods in Virginia Beach, VA

A tourist destination known for its miles of pristine beaches and charming suburban character, Virginia Beach is home to nearly half a million residents and is the most populated city in Virginia.

Virginia Beach

Originally settled back in colonial times, Virginia Beach is located in what is known as "America's First Region" and sits at the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay. Listed in “The Guinness Book of World Records” for the longest pleasure beach in the world, Virginia Beach is still very much a suburban haven for families and young professionals, as well as those who work at the nearby Norfolk Naval Base, home of the U.S. Navy's Atlantic fleet.

Beach Area

Beachfront property is at a premium in Virginia Beach, with many homeowners vying for an ocean view. Neighborhoods such as Chic's Beach, Bay Colony, Cape Henry Shores, and Fort Story are popular for this beach-going crowd, though they often need to compete with tourists for rental properties.

Away from the coast, there are a variety of additional neighborhoods that offer urban living, such as Kempsville, as well as quiet suburban land in places such as Alanton and Christopher Farms. Virginia Beach is also unique in its landscape, offering urban and suburban life backed right up to rural farmlands. The Lagomar neighborhood to the south of the city embodies this contrast, offering larger lots and more open space than many other Virginia Beach neighborhoods.

Costs for Bathroom Remodel Services and Supplies

Choosing to remodel a bathroom in your Virginia Beach home is a project with a range of possibilities that include simple updates and accessory swaps, as well as more complex tasks such as redesigning a space and reimagining it into a personal, private oasis. What work you choose to do and what materials you choose to add all impact the final cost and, in general, cost more than other places throughout the country.

From shower stalls to new toilets, from lighting to floors, there are many elements that make a bathroom complete. Which of these you choose to upgrade and change through the course of a remodeling project directly affects its final cost. Note the average price of these services, as well as how Virginia Beach costs compare to the country as a whole:

Average Range

Average Cost

$5,648 - $12,936

Virginia Beach, VA

$7,976 - $14,522

With a cost average higher than the national average, Virginia Beach homeowners need to be conscious of both the labor hours and materials that they choose for their bathroom remodel. This is especially important considering the costs for individual services, such as installing a lighting fixture, are close to or even lower than the national average.

Choosing Accessories

The quality of the materials and accessories you add into your bathroom have a direct effect on the total cost of your remodeling project. The large range of options available when it comes to details such as flooring, vanities, and porcelain fixtures include custom accessories on the high end and standard store-bought selections for the budget-conscious.

Custom Bathroom Accessories

For a truly personalized look, choose custom-fit bathroom accessories. These options, which include cabinetry, built-in details, and cut tile, are fitted to your space and often are of a higher quality than those purchased directly from store shelves. However, within the custom bathroom field, there are various levels of quality and choice to consider as well. National retail chains such as Lowe's and Home Depot offer semi-custom options, in which homeowners choose which elements to include from a menu of options. On the higher-end scale, complete custom-fit jobs, wherein artisans build pieces directly into a space, allow homeowners even more control and personalization.

In the Virginia Beach area, places such as Kempsville Cabinets and Atlantic Glass and Mirror Company offer specific custom selections. In addition, many contractors may offer customization services as part of your remodel or have relationships with other local contractors who can complete specific jobs.

Store-Bought Bathroom Accessories

The budget-conscious homeowner can still create a beautiful bathroom space through the use of store-bought, pre-fit bathroom accessories. Available at most major home improvement retailers, including national and local chains, as well as online, store-bought accessories also come in a variety of quality levels. Homeowners can also opt to purchase these accessories independently of their contractor and just pay for their installation.

Hiring a Professional Contractor for a Bathroom Remodel

There are a lot of details to consider when remodeling a bathroom. From general construction, such as drywall and floor installation, to more complex matters, such as plumbing and electric, the bathroom combines many different elements of construction that must be safely attended to. Finding a qualified general contractor who can either complete all these jobs independently or hire qualified subcontractors involves considering a number of general safety and performance factors along with some issues unique to the Virginia Beach area:

Qualifications and Licensure

The City of Virginia Beach has no specific requirements for licensing of contractors other than what is already required by the state. To that end, only specific contractors must obtain a license to work in the State of Virginia, including electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians. General contractors who complete any of this work on a Virginia Beach home must therefore have the proper license to do so. Virginia has three "classes" of contractor licenses that dictate the size and value of a job that a particular contractor can undertake. Any bathroom remodeling job that costs more than $7,500 to complete requires a contractor with a Class B license or above.

Before deciding on which contractor will complete your Virginia Beach bathroom remodeling project, address the time it will take, both in terms of hours worked and start to finish dates. General contractors doing all the work alone may have a standard rate for services. However, if they must use subcontractors to do plumbing or electrical work, their hourly rates may be different. Ask about the cost-per-hour of labor as well as how many hours a contractor believes a project will take. Get an overall timeline of the project as well. In Virginia Beach, the average bathroom remodel project takes 5-6 weeks.

Other Bathroom Remodel Projects and Ideas to Consider

In addition to the standard options, there are additional ways to either add value to or save money on a bathroom remodeling project. Virginia Beach prices for these services vary depending on the task selected compared to the rest of the country.

Small Bath Remodels

If your home has more than one bathroom, choosing which bathroom to remodel based on size is a good way to add value and elevate a home's appearance without going over budget. Because they have less square footage and smaller accessories, such as vanities, small bathrooms cost less to remodel, often falling on the lower end of the average cost in Virginia Beach.

Refinishing Bathroom Accessories

Another money-saving option during a bathroom remodel is to refinish the accessories such as the tub, shower, and sink, rather than replace them with new selections. This can save homeowners thousands of  dollars.

Building a Bathroom as Part of an Addition

Including a bathroom remodel as part of a larger addition project is an easy way to add square footage to small bathroom spaces as well as add more bathrooms to your home if needed. While this is a much more involved and expensive project, the average cost for an addition to an existing home in the Virginia Beach area is on par with the national average.

The value of a Virginia Beach home depends on many factors such as size, age, and proximity to the beach. However, regardless of where you live in this tourist-friendly town, making upgrades to your bathroom with a remodeling project is an easy way to increase your home's value and make daily tasks more pleasant.
