"My husband and I had a new roof installed by Stellar Roofing the week of 4/17/23. It was a large job including a complete tear off of multiple layers of shingles, including cedar shakes at the base. Our experience was positive from the start. Toby had come out to give us a quote, he was in our home for 3 hours going over details, taking photos and explaining how a new roof should work and the products that Stellar uses. He was kind, thorough and not pushy. We signed the contract and were excited to get this “to-do” checked off our list. We were told they were 3-4 weeks out at that point. About 3 weeks later we received a phone call to schedule our new install. The crew arrived on Tuesday (4/18/23) morning right on time and got right to work. They were fast, efficient and took extra care on cleaning up the large mess that comes with a new roof. They had the majority of it done within the 12 hours of the first day. Phil the project manager stopped in after the first day to check on progress and was available via telephone calls or text. The second day a few people from the crew returned to finish up the loose ends, install the vents and fix a small piece of soffit that needed to be replaced. They had everything done and cleaned up by 3:00PM the second day. Phil, the project manager, had reached out via telephone saying he would be in touch for a final walk through and to collect the remaining of the payment. The same night (Wednesday) that the Stellar Roofing had left our home we started to notice that our upstairs bathroom (toilet, shower and sink) were not draining correctly. We spent the next two days, many hours and money, snaking the drains, taking apart plumbing, removing the toilet with no avail. With more research we learned that it could be something wrong with the vent on the roof. With the new roof we thought that maybe a piece of shingle or trash had gotten stuck in the vent. Saturday morning 4/22/23 we got up on the roof and took a look down the vent. We could see that there was something down the vent but couldn’t make out what it was. I reached out to Phil, project manager and he had the main roofer from the job come down. He arrived within the hour and confirmed that he could also see something down the vent and said it looked like a piece of flashing that is used along the edge of the roof. He then spent an hour attempting to get this piece of flashing out and reported he couldn’t get it. He was going to the store and would be back. He came back and started banging on it and within 20 minutes reported that he was able to get it out. To our surprise the piece of flashing was 2, 12 feet long pieces (photo below) that had been wedged all the way down our vent which was blocking all output from our second floor bathroom. The roofer reports that he didn’t know how this 12 foot piece of flashing found its way into this 4 inch round pipe. There is no possible way that this piece of material fell into a 3 foot tall vent pipe that was coming out of the roof . Accidents happen but what makes it worse is that someone on this crew knew this happened and decided to brush it under the rug and hope that we wouldn’t find out. The roofer left after getting the flashing out of the pipe. We happened to look in the dumpster and found that he had broken/took off 14 inches of the exhaust pipe without asking or letting us know that was the only way to get this 12 foot piece flashing out. Again lying and hoping that we wouldn’t notice that he broke this off. This was on Saturday 4/22/23, I had texted a photo of the new found issue to the project manager. He reported that he was sorry that this happened and would be in touch today 4/24/23. 4/25/23 Final walk through with project manager where he extended his apologies about the situation but offered no solutions, compensations for our time and resources spent on fixing the issue they created after spending $26,000 on a new roof."

"The work that was done entailed removal of existing exterior chimney pipe along with removal and replacement of the following: offset boot, storm collar, ice shield, flashing, roof shingles, and vinyl siding. The entire area was cleaned up and all debris removed upon completion. The repair men did a fantastic job and took the time to explain every part of the repair that was done. Also, when Igor came out and gave us the estimate he was knowledgeable and very thorough in diagnosing the issue and giving us a detailed plan for the repair work. The job was scheduled in a timely manner as was promised on the estimate. Igor also came out the day after the repair work was done and water tested the repair to ensure we would no longer have any water leaking into the house at that location."

"My rear facade wall was falling apart, there was apparent deterioration, cracks falling apart. I was recommended to High Tech by our community board. Scaffold was used for this project. They chipped out the 4-story facade and applied wire-mash. First coat of cement was for curing and the second coat was  the finishing coat. The finishing coat was very finely re-finished. The back-wall was waterproofed with thoro-coat.  My roof was leaking as well at multiple places, bubbles had been formed with water seeping in, leaving into my kitchen. The weather was very rainy and stormy at that time and thanks to High Tech they repaired my roof by placing a new layer roof on top of the existing roof and stopped the leak. High Tech remains as one of the top recommended company in our community board."

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Warsaw, NY

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
