"I had a 2nd layer put on about 12 years ago. It was suppose to be good for 30 years (I guessed 20) but the workmanship was lacking and it had been leaking in the valleys for a number of years. IDEAL was the last one to bid but in short time talking, I decided on them. After stripping 2 layers, they had to replace a number of plywood sheets as the old ones were disintegrating. Ideal did a Superb Job working around rainy days. They installed all new flashing, new vents and metal around all roof edges. Even the skylight needed to be replaced. "Rain City Roofers: an honest, straightforward, skilled and reasonable roofing contractor I was entertaining the idea of having a major home improvement entity install a new roof, new screened gutters and new upstairs windows on my 1911 home in inner SE Portland, but the price tag shock (over $30K for those three projects) gave me considerable pause. And this companyâ s sales technique (which I now know is called â price conditioningâ (contractor starts out with what they represent as the average price for the type of project, rather than figuring the time and materials cost and adding a reasonable profit), was a turn-off. When I questioned the price approach, the big outfit started offering a much lower price. But now I did not trust them. Instead, after more research, I decided to go with three different companies, each of which specialized in only one product and service, and each of which was very straightforward regarding its bid to do the work. One of those companies was a gutter outfit, which in turn referred me to Rain City Roofers in Vancouver for my roofing needs. Rain City was not the lowest bid I received for the roofing job on our SE Portland home, but I was impressed by the high level of installation quality (e.g., using more nails than the minimum to ensure shingles would not blow off, as well as its use of an attractive and intelligently designed architectural shingle made by Owens Corning, a tried & true company, and also the degree of care that Rain City put into planning and executing the roofing proposal. But what absolutely sold me on Rain City Roofers was its honesty and straightforwardness from start to finish, by each and every person connected with the company, including its knowledgable sales rep Don, the receptionist (Elizabeth), the entire roofing crew that came out, and the owner Jason and his son Austin. "I interviewed eight roofing companies and the first 6 had the same roofing products and the sale sales style. My background was a salesperson for a New York Computer manufacture and am very acute of the sales process. My opening with all vendors was the same. My roof was 40 years old, and two layers needed to be removed with some structural problems. Mr. Rivera and his son spent 2 hours reviewing the problems with my roof. The only vendor to identify my roof was full of black mold. What the facts are importing with a contractor and a client. My request and response from Mr. Rivera were one of a personal commitment to a solution to my problems. Not a quick and cheaper quote from another vendor! Most of my roof was stripped off roof materials and plywood. During the work they discovered other structural problems with my roof. This raised the price another $5,000 because my request was to repair my roof. My home will be going on the market, and I want another family to raise a new family as I did over the last 40 years. Mr. Rivera and his son are men of there word and represent the best of the America I love. I also purchased new down spouts and drains from them. I am ready this summer to sell my home without the worry that a cheap job would impact on another family in the future."
