"Skilled and talented artisan - at a minimum. They replaced a railing that was taken down 2 decades ago and it looks like it was there the whole time and matches the others in the house. An artist."

"I am very pleased with the results from William and Apolo. William knew exactly the type of screening I was looking for and was able to order and install it. They replaced the screen door and some rotten wood, as well as repainted the porch. During the process, they kept me informed on the progress, The quality of work was very good."

"The best way for me to sum up my experience with Wells & Wells is simply. You are doing business with just genuinely good people. They take pride in their work, and their customer interactions. Our deck was destroyed by falling trees during the snowstorm in January. We had a regular wood deck and we thought the damage was extensive. After many contractors Wells was the only one that came by and provided an honest assessment. They didnâ t cut corners for cost purposes, they were just honest and real about what needed to be repaired. The not only repaired our deck, they almost completely rebuilt it. For all intents and purposes we now have a new deck. We were able to upgrade from wood to Trex (due to the current cost of lumber). The folks at Wells even told us about the cost differences in wood and Trex and provided professional advice in helping us upgrade. They never tried to price gouge us, they never took advantage. They arrived everyday on time and completed the work on schedule. Throughout the project they would check in to ask how I felt about their work as the project progressed, and they walked me through once it was completed. My wife and I were so impressed with their work that we will be contracting with them from other future projects to improve our home. Itâ s just great to know companies like this are still around."

"MENDEZ Painting did an excellent job in matching my existing engineered wood flooring, removed carpet from steps and repalce with white oak with stain to match flooring. Also installed a 20 x 30 wall tile in basement that looks outstanding. Very professional crew with expert results."

"We used Marks-Woods to do a full renovation of our first floor, which included structural changes, adding a bathroom, and re-doing a kitchen that had not been updated in 40 years. They were incredibly easy to work with, professional, and the results were worth every penny."

"Asa is a pleasure to work with.  He called ahead of time to provide a time estimate on his arrival, and listened carefully to my requirements.   Despite my providing him with a set of confusing, difficult to interpret drawings and instructions from the manufacturer, he quickly figured out how to assemble and install a rather complex security double deadbolt lock, making the task look like a piece of cake.  He fixed the sliding glass screen door when others (including myself) had failed on numerous occasions.  He has a quick wit, good sense of humor, and the ability to quickly assess requirements and come up with innovative solutions.  Recommend to all!

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Woodbridge, VA

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
