"Unless you're wealthy and throwing away money is what you're into, then I'd say AVOID Matrix Basement Solutions at ALL costs. They'll give you an incomplete project plan, then attempt to bilk you for thousands upon thousands of dollars more. I'm out over $60,000.00 and I have a less than half completed basement, which is only 400 sqaure feet. Addressed concerns with Matrix and they show zero concern, they could care less and are laughing all the way to the bank. Shameful business practice, not to be trusted. Filing a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau as well in hopes others do not get taken advantage of like I did."

"What made their service so good was their professionalism; they didn't stop working until the job was done. No matter what little problems came up, they kept going. They are excellent, professional, and very pleasant."

"Brunette Home Improvement has been my preferred contractor since I bought my current hours in 1992. They have done two roofs for me, re-sided the front of my house, and eavestroughs. Very thorough and professional."

"HWC - Home Works Corporation Wyoming, MI has been a total nightmare. We paid a $3000 deposit and paid them over $6000 to install a tub and tub surround in our bathroom. The caulk job(s) last only six seeks before it cracks and shrinks and it had to be redone several times and they will NOT cover it under the guarantee / warranty. We were charged $900.00 for the HWC installers to take the ceramic tile and plaster lat down to the bare studs, but they only partially and did it and didn’t do it all the way. They were supposed to use water resistant drywall from the tub to the ceiling and side to side, but used plywood instead and for only three feet from the tub up the wall and not the entire wall as they show in a training video they provided to us. They glued the plastic panels directly to the ceramic tile and we now have bubble lines across the entire back wall and side to side every twelve inches apart. We now have two different surfaces both plywood and ceramic tile behind the plastic paneling they installed. On the day the project was finished, three bikers showed to collect the remaining monies owed to HWC as the glue and caulk was not dried or had was set. HWC refuses to warranty and guarantee their work. Several attempts have been made to contact them and have them to come back out to see and correct the poor work performance, but HWC refuses to do so. The two owners have tried to intimate us and have threatened us via emails, that if we Google review HWC or report them to the “BBB” Better Business Bureau or take legal actions against them for the poor work that they have done. They fail to take responsibility and correct quality issues and the substandard performance of their installers. We have hired several good contractors over the past two years and with good and satisfying results. HWC has NOT been a good or reliable company to do business with and I encourage everyone to look elsewhere or prepare yourself for disappointment if you hire HWC. I advise you to avoid HWC like the plague. It is my recommendation that if you want good quality windows call 1-800-HANSONS. If you want a good quality roof call Above Roofing. If you are looking for other good quality contractors call Service Professor. Not HWC!"

"There wasn’t one thing that we didn’t enjoy and appreciate about hiring Halm & Perkins to do a complete renovation of our East Lansing condo. Joe and Lisa and their entire team were very professional and thoughtful and went above and beyond to help us with every detail. Originally, we were anxious about being able to find people that we could trust to create a design and suggest ideas that would work best for us and the space. From the first interview meeting Joe & Lisa our fears were assuaged and we liked them immediately. They made the entire process from start to finish easy. Both Joe and Lisa even got my husband’s quirky sense of humor and ran with it, keeping us all laughing. We did not expect to have so much fun with a renovation! We appreciated how well they listened to our ideas and questions and they never let us feel that anything we thought or asked was silly or stupid, communicating often with us via text, calls or emails and directing us to websites for ideas or clarification as needed. Joe and Lisa are a great team and often when we were stuck on a decision one of them would come through with photos or thoughts that helped what the other was suggesting so that we could understand. They both did a fantastic job guiding us through the myriad of decisions that were needed, or choosing something for us when we asked them to do so. They came up with ideas we would not have thought of like bricking some of the walls and we are so pleased with how that, and other ideas we trusted them with, turned out. We asked for more storage space and they made sure we had that in every room with ways we could not have thought up ourselves. We wanted more light in the combined kitchen-living area and they exceeded our expectations in providing that in new ways. We had some dreams we weren’t sure were feasible, like making room for a two person jacuzzi tub and they made it happen, thanks to Joe’s expertise and Lisa’s design ideas. When they didn’t know the answers they had experts to consult. I often felt like we were on an episode of HGTV’s “Fixer Upper” with Chip & Joanna Gaines. We now walk into our condo and have happy sighs that we get to live here. Thanks, Joe & Lisa and the whole Halm & Perkins team!"

"Asked for a quote they came out that day, it was the weekend I was waiting on quotes from 4 other places. He was the first to have it in that day, the others took 2 to 3 days. He was priced well under all the others. The painting job was top quality and was done in 1 day. Wow!!! I would highly recommend, they are hard workers and get straight down to business! Thank you!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Woodland, MI

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
