"Rema was very knowledgeable and efficient. My sump pump had stopped working and water was backing up. He was at my house within two hours of my posting to Home Advisor. Remedy also charged me way less than the larger companies quoted to me on the phone. I would recommend to everyone with plumbing or drainage issues that they call Remedy!!"

"I had a great experience working with Basement Systems USA. These guys were very professional, hardworking, and clean. They told me exactly what I needed to do and I was glad I went with their suggestions. I always had leak issues and occasionally my old sump pump wouldnâ t even work. I can truly forget about it now even in the worst of storms. In fact, that happened the following weekend after they left! A big storm came through and we even lost power for a couple of hours. The backup battery they installed let the sump pump keep working perfectly. Talk about just in time!"

"Great experience. Tawn was excellent - he knew what he was doing, got the sump pump removed, cleaned out the sump, repaired a pipe, then installed a new pump. Very happy, will definitely call Tawn back for any future plumbing needs!"

"I recently hired Johnson Plumbing for some much-needed repairs in my home, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the service. The technician, Punte, did an outstanding job fixing a leaky faucet and replacing the aging pipes in the basement that lead to the sump pump. He was punctual, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. His workmanship was top-notch, and he made sure everything was working perfectly before he left. The owner, Kap, runs a reliable and customer-focused business. It’s clear that quality and integrity are at the heart of Johnson Plumbing. I highly recommend them to anyone in need of plumbing services—this team truly delivers excellent results!"

"It went very, very well. They showed up on time and stayed late to get our basement put back into tip top shape as quickly as possible. It took approximately six weeks to complete the full job. They would have finished sooner if I didn't have to have this special shower surround, me and my bright ideas which went on back order as we entered into pandemic mode! But I loved it all when they finished. I have two sump pumps and they are my go-to team ANYTIME I have problems. Again, they show up quickly and do great work!"

FAQs for sump pump or interior foundation drains installation projects in Laurel, MD

Most residential pumps draw approximately 1,300 to 2,900 watts when they first start, then settle at roughly 800 to 1,050 watts during normal operation. The exact number depends on the motor’s horsepower and how often the float switch tells the pump to run. Even at the high end, the electricity cost is minor compared with the expense of cleaning up a flooded basement.

Grab a ruler and an empty 18‑inch‑wide pit. During a steady rain, time how much the water rises in one minute. Multiply that depth (in inches) by 60 to calculate gallons per hour, then add 50% for safety. If the result tops 2,100 gallons per hour—about 35 gallons a minute—you’ll need a 3/4‑horsepower unit. Anything lower, and a 1/3- or 1/2-horsepower pump should do the trick.

Loud rattling, constant cycling, or shuddering vibrations are the pump’s way of telling you it’s on its last legs. Musty smells, higher electric bills, and visible rust are other red flags. If the unit is 10 years old or older and exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it before the next heavy rain turns your basement into a wading pool.

You don’t have to hire a licensed plumber, but you should still bring in someone who installs sump pumps for a living—whether that’s a plumber, basement‑waterproofing specialist, or experienced handyman. They know the local codes, can wire the pump safely, and will test the system before they leave. Skipping professional help might void the warranty and could leave you with a pump that fails when you need it most.

Not every basement needs a pump, but if your home sits in a floodplain, has a high water table, or has ever taken on water during a storm, a sump pump is inexpensive insurance. For basements that only struggle with condensation or the occasional damp spot, sealing cracks and improving drainage may be all that is needed.
