"Apparently, my mom's toilet had a slow leak that eventually weakened the structure that supports it  I discovered this when I was washing dishes in the kitchen and felt drops of water on my head.  I ran upstairs to find the floor almost totally given away.  <br /> I searched on Angie's list and found this contractor and they came over right away to assess the damage; they were shocked.  I explained that this is my mother's house and I only live here two months out of the year to help her through the winter months.  I stated my mom is 83 and she has a very low heart rate, around 40, has had two knee replacements several  years ago that are wearing out, and she gets out of breath when she walks down three flights of stairs to use the 1/2 bathroom down in the basement.  <br /> The contractor asessing the job, took notes, took pictures, was very sympathetic, and forwarded the pictures and details to his boss.  The boss scheduled reconstruction work for the very next day as he too felt that it was an emergency.  <br /> The work is not finished and they will come back next week to put the final finishing touches on everything which includes leveling the floor and putting new vinyl flooring down.  This comment is for the first part of the work, the professional response and follow up, and work to reconstruct the floor in one day so my mom would have to climb down three flights of stairs.  When  you look for a contractor you are looking for the following: <br /> <blockquote> <blockquote> <blockquote> <p>Prompt reply<br /> Prompt visit to assess the work requested<br /> Friendly contractor; one that sees the situation through the eyes of the customer requesting the work<br /> Prompt scheduling of work<br /> Quality Professional work<br /> This vendor was all that and more.  I can't thank them enough for their kindness and professionalism.</p> </blockquote> </blockquote> </blockquote> <br />"

"The roofing job went fine. They did exactly what I had asked them to do and they did it well. They are a good company. I have had good success with them all the time. I have been here for twenty years, so they did the first remodeling twenty years ago and then last remodeling was eight years ago with some other work in between. They are very professional. They are honest and they do good work. I have no negative things about them whatsoever. Their prices are fair."

"Excellent. Jason was very easy and professional to work with. Laid out a clear plan for us to begin with. He met with our kitchen designer Sarah Munter Legacy Draft and Design (also excellent) along with us at our home to discuss the project. He was professional, honest, dependable and easy to communicate with by phone, text, or email. Always kept us appraised of the plan. He definitely has the right folks to work with. Drywall, painter, electrician, plumber etc. We are very pleased and will recommend Jason & Strategic Construction to everyone. And would definitely hire him again"

"Very good communication to arrange the quote and actual work, and they showed up on time.  The job started as basic wall and trim work, with no detail for closet and door work.  The price for that work was very competitive.  Upon seeing that work I added 3 additional walls and closet trim work (shelving, door jams, etc.) and the price escalated significantly, by more than double.  The ending price was the same had I hired a professional painter, versus Bostad, which is more of a handyman service.  While I like the work Bostad performed, for the final price, I would have preferred to go with a professional painter as they would have prepped the walls as necessary. <br />"

"Nick was very helpful and knowledgeable in helping us to decide on a garage plan that best fit our needs. He and his guys started the project on time when planned and finished on time. They were here everyday working around our needs as well. Nick and his crew were always keeping us informed as to what was next, how long it would take and what we could expect. (like when water was off).. job site was ALWAYS cleaned up, nothing was ever left that could cause injury to us or our neighbors. They were very thoughtful or our needs and the neighbors with their big trucks and equipment around thia small area. The finished job was more than we expected! Nick has called us a couple times already just making sure we didn't have any problems or concerns with his work. Of course, we don't, the work was great, done right the first time and in a timely manner. Nick and his crew were great!"

"This project went really great.  Wyatt was great to work with. He is very knowledgeable and makes it look easy.  He listened to what I wanted and offered his expertise on issues that arose during the project.  He went out of his way to get the project done while respecting our schedules.  He explained what he was doing and why he was doing it.  He made sure that the proper materials were used keeping mind our budget.  Highly recommended.   <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Mountain Iron, MN

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
