"James was amazing! He was in contact with us in scheduling a time to look at our project, we received an estimate by email the next day and let us know a time frame on when he could get the patio poured. He was extremely professional and the sub-contractor he hired to do our job was on-time and worked till late evening just to clean up the job site. I would definitely hire Driftless Craft for our next project!!! "

"Great, we have no complaints... we would definitely recommend the company to our family and friends. When telling people we were getting our basement waterproofed and people were asking who was doing the basement... we heard nothing but good things about Complete Basement Systems!"

"We could not be happier with the work this company did on our home. They installed our siding and windows, took care of extra interior trim work, and made the whole process a great experience from start to finish. We’ve worked with other contractors in the past, and this was by far the best experience we’ve ever had. The owner was right there on the job, and the entire crew worked extremely hard, stayed focused, and took real pride in what they were doing. They worked through the dead of winter and still got to our project ahead of schedule. Their price was very fair, and the value was even better than expected. Our house is beautiful, and we truly appreciated not only their hard work but also getting to know them along the way. We would highly recommend them."

"I researched basement waterproofing solutions and was considering doing it myself. Then I found Safe Basements and read the literature about their product/process. To me, it seemed better than other similar products. I was surprised that they cover my place -- 2 hours into Wisconsin, or 3 hours from Litchfield. Brad came out to inspect the problems in my basement -- horizontal cracking, bowing, and water intrusion. He was able to explain the causes of those problems as well as others that I hadn't noticed. We agreed to pay for anchors to stabilize one wall that was bowing, and install drain tile and a sump pump. I'll be honest, I didn't shop around. I have no idea what other companies are charging for the same services. I normally get 3 or 4 bids or other opinions. I felt comfortable with the amount of research that I'd done, the knowledge Brad seemed to have, and the information about the products that I decided to hire Safe Basements without talking to other companies. I don't regret that decision. The wall anchor/stabilization crew called me before leaving Litchfield. Their ETA was pretty close to the actual time of arrival. When they arrived, we discussed the work being done. They did the work. They cleaned up. They gave me information about the anchor system and what I needed to do to correct the bowing and cracks. Everything was done as expected. The drain tile/sump crew was stuck at a previous job. They called me the day before (Tuesday) my job was expected to start to let me know there would be a delay starting my job. He then called in the middle of the start day (Wednesday) to let me know, they wouldn't be to my house until the next day. I was expecting a call between 7 and 8 on Thursday to let me know they were leaving Litchfield. Instead, I got a call at about 7:15 to let me know they were 15 minutes from my house. When they arrived, we talked about the work to be done, they cocooned my stuff in plastic, and they went to work. I think they worked until about 7 that day. They returned on Friday at about 8:30, having stopped to dump my concrete and dirt and to pick up gravel and concrete. They worked until about 10:30pm on Friday. I appreciated that they finished on Friday even though it was later than I expected. They cleaned up everything thoroughly, and walked me through the details of the sump pump and battery backup systems. Even though they'd driven a long distance, worked two very long days, and it was very late Friday, I didn't feel they rushed through. The job was complete. I think they would have stayed later if I'd had anymore questions. Unfortunately, one of the workers left his very nice tape measure, and I have not been able to get it back to him."

"Just recently had a 48in x 48in egress window installed in our basement. The 2 gentlemen, Caleb & Graham were nothing short of awesome. I'm a retired carpenter and I can say their craftsmanship was second to none. Clean, precise. I was enjoying the perfect gape in our foundation and the framework even before they installed the window, because it was being done properly. Heck, even the hole they dug for the well was precise. Both Caleb & Graham were very friendly, communicative and courteous. Would use again and highly recommend."

"He and his employee were concerned about keeping the rest of the basement as clean as possible.  They used plastic runners on all the carpeted paths to the areas to be repaired.   All sawing was done outside. The sheet rocker and taper closed off work areas that caused dust to accumulate. They hauled away all debris. They came back after the sheet rock was installed and painted to install the baseboard.  It took a little longer than we expected, but they had told be that might happen because they were very busy.  I have one carpenter that came and took measurements and I have not yet heard back from him. <br /> Lon was very conscientious and great to work with.  We would not hesitate to use his company again. <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Rochester, MN

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
