"This company uses the Orange Oil* and microwaves to treat for termites; and boric acid (Timborand reg;) on exposed wood to prevent future infestations. They use video cameras to look in the walls to determine which studs are affected.
Miguel was prompt on arrival, courteous and did a more thorough examination of the rafters than the previous termite inspector from another company. But it was clear that he was not nearly as experienced as another inspector from a third company that subsequently inspected our home.
He did not look in the attic nor check the crawl space under the floor. He relied on the previous inspection of another company that inspected the crawl space and found no termites. He only speculated as to how the termites were getting into the home, and did not verify the entry point.
We were quoted $720 to treat the affected studs, and $1260 to treat the affected studs and apply Timborand reg; to exposed wood for termites. (These prices include their 10% internet discount) The whole house treatment includes a 3 year warranty with yearly inspections. There is an option for an extended warranty at a cost of $200/year. The extended warranty is available only if the original warranty has not expired.
We considered this company, but subsequently learned from our county Agricultural Commissioner's Office that they see more repeat treatments when orange oil or microwave treatment is used compared to chemical treatment (fipronil aka. Thermadorand reg;, or fumigation). We are concerned this may indicate that the microwave and orange oil treatment are not as effective in eradicating termites despite a controlled study conducted by the University of California [Vernard R. Lewis et al, Journal of Economic Entomology 89(4): 922 - 934 (1996)) that suggests the method holds promise. The county Agricultural Commissioner's Office confirmed that boric acid treatment on exposed wood works well for prevention of termites and fungus.

*Addendum: At the end of the inspection we received a hand written estimate from Miguel based on the work and process we verbally discussed and he explained. We did not receive a written estimate until after this review was written. There is a discrepancy in what we believe we were told (that they use Orange Oil) and what the formal written estimate/contract states -that they use fipronil [and not Orange Oil]. We also noted discrepancies in what were told by the inspectors versus the terms of the written estimate/contract with other companies so this is not unique to this company. We would recommend reviewing the formal estimate/contract with any company before committing to any work.

"This service is worth every penny even though pricey.  They did everything they said they would do and accommodated all my little requests.  They were professional, thorough and cleaned up after they were done.  The warranty is great too.  My attic smells great (for an attic yeah hard to believe) and I feel better knowing nothing will be getting in this winter since we heard scratching going on last winter.  They set traps as a precaution even though there is nothing active going on, so yes very thorough.  I would definitely recommend them for this service, as I could not believe this type of service was even out there.

1. It went very well.  I had put out bait for a rat that had invaded our house just before Thanksgiving.  The rat took the bait and died, but before dying it crawled into a semi-accessible spot in our basement under a bath tub.  We discovered his approximate location after the critter began to smell badly.  Jose from Gring Pest Control came out the day after I called, right at the scheduled time, located the varmint and removed it quickly and efficiently.  He also provided an effective ingredient for removing the smell, provided good suggestions for dealing with any future problems, and did a quick tour of our house to look for areas where rats could potentially enter our house in the future.  I thought the fee was very reasonable for the service provided.  I would call them again.

"I prayed that God would send us honest people to deal with subterranean termites swarming inside one of the rooms in our home last Friday and He did. I left my contact information with several companies and asked people I knew if they had any referrals I could call. No one knew of any referrals and I received about 5 call backs of which Miguel from Horizon was one of them. Some of the other companies were able to come out and check, but not until Monday or Tuesday of the following week. I spoke to Miguel and told him the situation. I was so grateful and relieved when Miguel said he would make time to stop by and check out the issue. Miguel arrived at the scheduled time and I proceeded to show him the termite issue inside the house. He graciously offered to inspect the house underneath to assess the termite swarming issue and inspected the entire home and detached garage for subterranean and wood eating termites as well. He was very thorough in explaining his findings and the service his company provided to take care of the situation. I was overwhelmed with gratitude by Miguel’s care, concern, courtesy and honesty and I felt the price was very fair and reasonable for the work that needed to be done. I hired Miguel and his company to do the job the following Tuesday. They came as scheduled and completed the job, detailed just as we had contracted. They went above and beyond by removing wood debris that was left under our house from previous construction projects before we purchased the home. It is an understatement to say the we are extremely pleased with the service we received from Horizon Termite Control and highly recommend them for termite control issues. We thank God for granting our request and send a heartfelt thank you to Miguel and Jesse for their willingness to help us in our time of need. Merry Christmas & a Hopeful 2023!!!"
