"This was considerably more involved than the usual bathroom remodel, much more akin to a full kitchen remodel - a total gut and rebuild in a larger than usual bath, in an older home, with lots of intrinsic difficulties and "special requests". To further complicate matters, work commenced just as the COVID lockdowns began, turning what should have been a 4 week job into a 3+ month job, as suppliers were closed down, deliveries were delayed, and, in one case, with the loss of over two weeks because a critical supplier had its operations suspended due to alleged lockdown violations. The process, in short, could have been a total nightmare for all concerned but for Mr. Spaeth's courtesy, good humor, and professionalism. In fact, despite the problems, he was quickly able to give us a reasonably usable bath while the rest of the project continued around us as materials trickled in. Mr. Spaeth was always punctual, worked diligently, evinced real pride in his work, did a thorough clean-up at the end of each day's efforts and was always courteous and willing to accommodate "special requests" and to discuss and explore options. In several cases, he also came up with truly ingenious "fixes" and modifications which contributed immeasurably to the finished product (even reconfiguring some light fixtures which we wanted but which did not work in the proposed application - he not only figured out an acceptable fix, but, on his own initiative, secured the parts needed and personally reworked the lights to get us the desired result). I particularly appreciated his assistance in refining our "vision" for the end result. Not only did he make useful suggestions for improving the end result, but he was also ready to accommodate our own visions for the space (even liaising with potential suppliers to get the items we wanted). ln short, he made the project a truly collaborative effort, giving us, in the end, a bath which extracts "oohs and aahs" from all who see it. His price estimate was commensurate with other bids and the only divergence from the agreed price was entirely due to some additional work which we imposed mid-job (which necessitated yet further delay in completion). Unfortunately, for every silver lining there is a cloud, which observation brings me to a caveat (a painful necessity which I wish I could avoid). At the end of the job, there were a few items which remained to be fixed or finished. Despite multiple promises by the contractor to take care of them, several months have passed without follow-through and the contractor has essentially discontinued contact, "ghosting us" as it were. I would therefore recommend, as a condition of the contract, a "hold back provision" of 10% of the project cost pending a final inspection with sign off and final payment upon resolution."
