"I highly recommend City Renovations and Remodeling to new and experienced homeowners and investors. In fact, Mike Wiggs, owner of the company, was highly recommended to me from a trusted source. Mike has been my designer, general contractor and project manager for over three years. He and his team of subcontractors for all the trades and handymen have successfully completed numerous projects for me. The internal big jobs included Mike and his team remodeling my basement into a permitted apartment with an egress window, injection well system, and recessed lighting; remodeling my kitchen into a larger space, better layout and upgraded appliances, cabinets, backsplashes (e.g., switching from an electric cooktop island to a slide-in gas range and installing a peninsula); changing the location of the sliding door and a set of windows in my sunroom for better flow and sightline from the front door entry to the patio door leading to my wooded backyard; replacing the damaged one of the two HVAC systems (i.e., one for the first floor and basement and the other for the second floor); and whole house interior painting and decorative touches (accent walls, trim, etc.) The external big jobs included Mike and his team resolving the sources of severe water damage to my two-story front door entry area and installing a new door, side lites and stoop. He resolved other water problems at my house by installing upgraded, larger gutters connecting to a new underground drainage system, and re-grading a section of the backyard next to my house in order to better collect water coming onto the house and move it away from the house. The other jobs Mike and his team completed include installing decorative lighting in the front of my house and security lighting at the sides and back; installing and repairing wooden privacy fencing in my backyard; washing away years of mold, mildew and stains from the siding of my house; and installing shelving for two closets and the laundry room to increase my storage space. After years of City Renovations and Remodeling successfully improving or repairing my home, I hired the company to help me with an investment rental property. Mike completed a walk-thru assessment and report to supplement the information from the home inspector and appraiser. Through my pre-purchase consultation with Mike, I got a good idea of what it would take improve the property given my goals and budget. "To be completely upfront, I should first make it clear that I did not have any work done, my comments are strictly based on the estimate/initial home visit. I also want to start with a few positive things that I did like about this encounter. First, I believe this business is based in Southern Maryland or someplace well outside the beltway, so I greatly appreciated that he drove all the way to my home just for an estimate. Secondly, I appreciated that he showed up on time, which is important for me as I have a bit of a tight work schedule. Lastly, I should note that he did seem to know his stuff, and understood what I wanted to have done. But here are the concerning things: First, as soon as he arrived, he immediately began pointing out other issues that were not directly related to the porch, such as noticing that some of the trim around one of my upstairs windows was rotting, and that there were a couple of missing shingles on my roof (gee thanks, I also have a hole in my left sock, want to talk about that too?). This really wasn't a major issue, but it was an immediate indication that he was fishing for extra projects. Later, after assessing the kind of work that would need to be done to the porch, he quoted me $18k, which at first appeared fairly reasonable. But after asking a few more questions, I learned that this estimate would not include any of the paperwork necessary for required permits, or even a drawling/sketch. He recommended that I do the paperwork/permit myself if I wanted to keep the price at 18k. I asked him how much more he would charge if I took care of everything except for the required drawling, he said that alone would cost an additional $2,000! By this point, I was getting a little nervous and wanted to make sure I had the specifics nailed down. So I asked if he would provide me the price in writing. He immediately said that he would not provide anything in writing, and that if I had any doubts about his work, I should look at the reviews on angles list! I don't care if someone has a 1,000 positive reviews, any contractor worth your business should always provide you an estimate in writing, and they should be completely upfront about any additional costs. Perhaps he's good at what he does, maybe I would have loved his work, but it's just not worth the risk."

"Lux Renovations did an excellent job in remodeling my basement. David Guimares, together with Louis Villegas, did a very timely and professional job with installing an Owens Corning basement. They were very easy and courteous to work with and provided key input when needed for HVAC considerations. They worked well with coordinating electrical work and getting required town inspections done in a timely manner. In addition, David provided good suggestions to enhance our finished basement plans prior to starting the work, including how we may be able to reroute some plumbing to enhance our celling height. My wife and I (and are neighbors) are very pleased with the outcome of our finished basement and recommend Lux for remodeling a basement."
