"We couldn't be happier with the amazing work by Kent and his team. Gray Construction was highly recommended by two pool renovation contractors. With a large complex project, we knew we couldn't afford to go with anyone else. Kent is not only an amazing concrete artist, he addressed things like drainage and reinforcements to prolong the life of our concrete and prevent damage from erosion, two things that other concrete contractors didn't even mention. We knew we wanted a large concrete patio and pool surround, but we allowed Kent and his team to use their creativity to make the design unique, and we are so glad that we did! They are true craftsmen who pay attention to details to make the design just right. It is refreshing to see a team so enthusiastic about their work and we would recommend them without hesitation."

"J&E Masonry completed a stone wall repair as well as a small concrete entrance repair for me, both with outstanding effort in all aspects related. Time to come out after initial contact, view desired work and provide an estimate was remarkable. Start dates were provided and time frames for completion maintained. Work was meticulous and cleanup exceptional. Thank you Edgar and Micheal-recommend without reservation."

"They responded quickly. Presented a clear plan to keep our basement dry. They did the work as promised in a timely fashion, and persevered through obstacles (cramped conditions and thick reinforced concrete to hammer through). I'm satisfied."

Customers say: Quality work
"We hired BetterWay Excavating this fall to demolish and remove an old concrete pool deck on our property. The project also consisted of hauling away of all the concrete, and metal from the old pool deck, and then bringing in topsoil to fill in the area where the pool deck and pool was located, as well as putting down grass seed in that area. Scottâ s quote was the best priced out of several that we obtained. Scott did a very professional and thorough job on the project. He did a great job organizing the project, and went above and beyond even doing some additional work, which included removing the old pool filters, removing some tree/shrub roots that were near the pool deck, hand saw cutting some of the concrete that was near a wall, and near a building, etc. He also did a great job grading the entire area, and seeding with grass seed. Scott did the entire project in just two days, as promised. We would highly recommend BetterWay Excavating!"

"This is the second time we have hired Groundworks (formerly Bakers Waterproofing) to perform work at our house. The first project was in 2017 when we had the waterproofing system installed. We called Groundworks a few weeks ago to get an estimate on lifting our front sidewalk and stairs that have sunk a lot over the past year. The steps had sunk to the point that the railings were not connected to the house, making it very unsafe for anyone coming into the front of our home. Aaron Lenker & Corbin Gillichbover were very professional and knowledgeable when they arrived to assess our sidewalk and steps to lift them. They left our sidewalk and the surrounding area better than when they arrived. Our steps and sidewalk are now level, and the railings are securely attached to the house again. We are thrilled! I would highly recommend Groundworks if you need a basement waterproofing system or any concrete lifted."

Figuring out how many bars you need isn’t a one-size-fits-all equation. A structural engineer or experienced concrete contractor will look at your slab’s thickness, the loads it must carry, and local code requirements, then run the numbers for you. That quick consultation protects your budget and keeps the finished slab safe, level, and up to code.
Match the metal to the job. For light, thin pours like a sidewalk, welded wire mesh often does the trick. Thicker slabs—driveways, garage floors, foundations—usually call for traditional steel bars. If your site sees salt, humidity, or coastal spray, spend the extra cash on galvanized or stainless steel to fend off rust and avoid future repairs. When in doubt, a concrete pro can confirm the best fit for your project and budget.
Stainless steel costs more up front, but the alloy can last 75 years or longer with little to no rust. That longevity means fewer repairs, less maintenance, and peace of mind for structures exposed to salt, moisture, or de-icing chemicals. If you’re pouring near the coast or in a humid climate, the extra dollars now can save you multiple replacements down the road.
An engineer will review the slab’s thickness, span, soil conditions, and expected loads, then specify bar size, spacing, and grade. Skipping that step or guessing can leave you with cracked concrete or a blown budget. For a modest consultation fee, a local engineer or contractor can do the math and hand you a rebar schedule that meets code and keeps your project on solid footing.
