"We compared several companies, but finally chose DMV because of the positive reviews on Angie's List, the quality of its materials, and its attention to detail.  Rolando, our project manager, gave us a detailed written proposal breaking down the cost of materials and labor and carefully explaining the terms of agreement.  Although I was very inexperienced at selecting materials and paint colors, he patiently guided me through the entire selection process.  Even then my selections were not cast in stone and he was flexible and willing to make adjustments along the way.
Before DMV could do any work, mold remediation companies demolished the Kitchen (with the exception of the walls and ceiling), the Master bath, and the Front hallway and Powder bath ceilings.  DMV demolished the rest.  The men put up new boards on the ceiling and walls of the Master bath and new drywall on the walls and ceilings; laid down new floors with cement board; installed ceramic tiles with grout and sealer on the floors; installed plumbing with fixtures and valves; installed a garbage disposal; installed a glass door system to enclose the shower and a shower pan with centered drain and waterproof membrane in the Master bath; carved out a niche for shampoo in the shower and bathtub walls; installed a bathtub with an overflow drain in the Hall bath; installed ceramic tiles on shower and bathtub walls; installed vanities with granite countertops and backsplashes, cutout sinks, and mirrors (one of which was custom-made) in all the bathrooms; installed a quartz countertop, ceramic backsplash, and large stainless steel sink in the Kitchen; installed cabinets in the Kitchen; installed knobs and pulls on all the vanities and cabinets; installed new electrical outlets and switch plate covers in the bathrooms and recessed lights in the shower and tub; installed recessed lights with dimmers on the kitchen ceiling and countertops; installed new light fixtures in the bathrooms; installed new exhaust fans in the bathrooms; installed a floor vent in the Kitchen; installed 3 toilets; installed towel bars, towel rings, TP holders, and robe hooks in the bathrooms, installed new appliances in the Kitchen, including a stove, refrigerator, and microwave oven; prepped and painted the ceilings and walls of our kitchen, bathrooms, and Front hallway with 2 coats of paint; and finally they removed and hauled away all trash on a daily basis.
And that's not all.  Beyond the original written contract they installed drywall in a hole near the Basement closet cut out due to mold; prepped and painted 2 walls in the Basement damaged by water leakage; installed a new vanity in the Master bedroom to match the vanity in the nearby Master bath; prepped and painted the walls in the Master bedroom near the entrance to the Master bath; replaced 4 brushed nickel door knobs along with a front door lock; replaced a 2-outlet electrical box in the Basement with a 4-outlet box to accommodate our new washer, dryer, and sump pump; installed a very large sink in the Kitchen so I could handwash small loads; installed 2 trash bins inside the kitchen cabinet; replaced our old ceiling light and fan in the Kitchen with a new one; repaired the glass sliding door in the Kitchen; replaced the screen door on the other side of the sliding glass door; installed a hanging basket for fruits and vegetables; installed some white vertical blinds (which I bought) in place of some dreary, old drapes; installed a new divider between the foyer and living room to separate 2 different styles of ceiling; replaced metal shelves in the pantry and near the Master bath with wider wooden shelves and painted them; replaced a wooden shelf and rack in the coat closet with new ones and painted them; helped me set up a dehumidifier in the basement; painted a wall near the stairs going from the Foyer to the second floor along with the stair railing and wooden trim; installed a new light in the Foyer; and secured some loose metal ducts in the basement.  Rolando's men also reinstalled an incorrectly installed pair of exterior shutters on a brick wall.  They also installed 5 new pairs of shutters.  So far they are still secure.
DMV's men worked in teams and were always professional, punctual, hard-working, congenial, and responsive to questions. When one fell short of expectations, Rolando removed him and replaced him with a more responsible person.  With the exception of the awesome Mongolian countertop men, all were Hispanic and at least one man on each team could speak English fluently with me.  Muchos gracias to Maynor, Orlando (2), Pelix, Omar, Oscar, Alex (Alli), David, Frank, Junior, John, Francisco, Hernando, Cesar, Fidel, Grover, Alberto, Morris, Ray, and Willi (forgive me if I forgot anyone.)
The whole project took almost three months with men regularly coming in Monday through Saturday most weeks.  My husband and I lived in the house during that time and although the construction generated a great deal of dust, the men contained their work areas, cleaned off the dust in our living quarters daily, hauled away all trash, and graciously put up with the inconveniences of our coming in and out of their work areas.
Rolando greatly expanded our storage space not only in the design of the kitchen cabinets but in the widening of the pantry and Master bath shelves, and the addition of drawers to the Hall Bath. His recommendation that we give preference to light colors also gave the areas an appearance of spaciousness.  Rolando's men utterly transformed the Master bath from a small, moldy space that no one had used in a couple years (mostly due to a hole in the floor we were afraid of falling through) to a spacious, sacred retreat that everyone now wants to use. The unique blend of gray, white, pale pink, gray, and lime green colors, the distinct design of the ceramic tiles on the floor and walls, plus my picture of a lotus blending all these colors together creates an absolutely exquisite space for cleansing body and soul.  The men also transformed the kitchen from a drab pink, navy blue, and beige space to a sunny, earthy blend of yellow, white, turmeric, black, gray, and taupe colors that stimulates digestion and creates a sense of well being. The Front hallway leading into the Kitchen has a similar mixture of colors in the paint and woodcut pictures that lead naturally into the kitchen. Rolando's wise selection of a soft yellow paint for the walls in these 2 areas instead of the pale green I first suggested prevented me from spoiling the dramatic effect. The Powder bath off to the side of the Front hallway offers a soothing contrast with its blend of charcoal, light gray, pale blue, white, and pink colors.
While DMV completed our remodeling for the most part on November 7, the company gave us a 3-month warranty on its work. On Dec. 5 they returned to fix a broken tub stopper, put cauking around the tub where there were cracks, touched up holes on 2 drawers in the kitchen, and touched up some painting near the basement doors because I had decided to move some of my hanging pictures.  The tub stopper later gave us trouble and on Jan. 11 a different person came to look at it. He  took it with him and returned 2 days later with a new part and installed it.  We have not had any trouble since.  DMV did an awesome job for us. We highly recommend this company and may call them again to do some more remodeling.

"Let me start by saying I am thrilled with my new countertops. Everyone I dealt with at this company was friendly and professional. They have very competitive prices and really stand out by offering a free sink and free installation. The two gentlemen that did my installation were absolutely wonderful. They were meticulousand ensured everything was level and properly supported prior to laying the granite. They laid drop cloths and cleaned behind themselves as they went. I will certainly be recommending this company to anyone looking to purchase granite countertops.

"They did a terrific job.  My cabinets look beautiful.  They took off every door and drawer and sanded them, put two coats of primer and two coats of paint.  The old oak island looks gorgeous with the new wainscoting around it.  Now I just need to get new countertops and my kitchen will sparkle!
They did an excellent job painting the walls as well.  Very courteous.

"Bill did a pretty good job installing our tile backsplash, though he said that he doesn't do lots of tile installation. He was able to start work a couple of days after we first contacted him. The job took him several hours longer than he intially estimated, but he stuck to his initial quote, which I appreciate. There were some minor spacing issues between some of the installed tile (if you look closely you can see the seam of one of the tile sheets, but it's usually covered anyway so no big deal), and the electrical outlets are not entirely flush with their covers. All in all, though, we added the new backsplash & countertops to get us through a few years until we can gut our kitchen and completely renovate it. This job looks good and will definitely serve that purpose."

Customers say: True professional

"Devin (the owner of Marvel Homes) is an AMAZING person to work with. He is punctual, very responsive and I really enjoyed working with his team. He does not cut corners with his work and you can be assured that his work is of the highest quality. He was a little more expensive than past contractors I used but you pay for what you get. I had someone put in a oven hood and they did not know the industry standards which resulted in the hood not working after a short period. Devin came in to fix that and did a beautiful job.  Devin's workers are polite, professional and they clean up really well after each day to ensure that the place is dust free. Although he may have less reviews here on Angie's List, be sure to ask him for his many testimonials from many happy clients he has served. His workmanship is also top notch and he comes by on a daily basis while his team was working on our house, to ensure that all was going well. I would use Marvel Homes without hesitation for future projects and highly recommend him to anyone."

"Even with a few days' delay due to power outage at the countertop supplier, our kitchen remodel started a day early and finished in two weeks flat! None of our friends could believe it when they saw how quickly it was going. Polo, Al, and their crews were fast and professional, and very responsive to any questions or concerns we had along the way. We're extremely happy with the results and would definitely use them again."

FAQs for countertop and backsplash service projects in Dhs, MD

Butcher block countertops come in three main styles, each offering a unique look and function. Flat grain, also known as face grain, showcases the natural wood patterns, giving your kitchen a modern and elegant appearance. Edge grain is made from long, narrow wood strips, making it sturdy and providing a consistent grain pattern. End grain features a checkerboard pattern that is highly durable and perfect for heavy food preparation. Each style caters to different aesthetic preferences and usage needs, enhancing your kitchen's look and functionality.

With proper care, wood countertops can last anywhere from 20 to 100 years. To keep yours looking like new, clean up spills immediately and reseal the surface regularly—ideally once a month in the first year, then twice a year after that. Regular maintenance helps preserve the wood's beauty and durability for decades.

Wood countertops aren't hard to maintain if you keep up with regular care. Simply clean them with mild soap and water after use and reseal them monthly during the first year (then twice a year afterward). Using a food-grade oil or sealant protects the wood from damage. With a bit of routine maintenance, your countertop will stay beautiful and durable.

Wood countertops are sanitary with proper care and maintenance. By sealing them with a food-grade sealant and cleaning them regularly with mild soap and water, you create a barrier that prevents bacteria from getting into the wood. Always dry the surface thoroughly after cleaning to keep it hygienic and safe for food prep.

It's best to oil raw wood countertops once a month during the first year. After that, you can oil them twice yearly to keep them in good shape. If your countertop is professionally stained or sealed, you might not need to oil it as often. Regular oiling helps prevent drying and cracking, preserving the wood's natural beauty and durability.
