More recently, they performed work at my Commercial Laboratory location where they performed the following at the highest level; General Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Painting, baseboard and trim work, moving of equipment, ceiling restoration, mold removal, etc. Not only did they complete this in a timely fashion, they were respectful, professional and achieved a high level of quality. "Great quality work at an affordable price. Hristo showed up on time, gave a clear estimate for the job and got to work right away. Although a couple of unexpected complications came up during the process, Hristo quickly came up with creative solutuons. I now have awesome looking ceiling recessed lights and a perfectly installed Ring security camera above my garage. Will definitely call Hristo again for similar jobs in the future."

"This was our first time working with Lighthouse Restoration Group and our experience with Vlad and Mariusz was great. LRG was excellent in every aspect of service. They visited our home without any service fee and provided a clear estimate and stuck to it. The individuals that inspected our home (Vlad and Mariusz) were the same two individuals that arrived to do the work. They arrived on time, and made sure that the areas where they worked were protected from dust. They expertly installed new wiring in very difficult places and did it without having to remove drywall. They consulted us while working to ensure that we agreed on placement of new outlets and lighting fixtures. They pointed out unexpected wiring problems in a way that was clear and frank but also reassuring. We've hired them back to further investigate and address issues of necessary repair that they found while completing work already agreed upon. We very strongly recommend them!"

    Electrician

"Allan and his assistant Kevin showed up every day on time and worked through conscientiously throughout each day until five PM. They installed over 40 LED ceiling lights in three rooms, under cabinet LED kitchen lights in three locations, and two recessed in floor outlets. Allan met with us at a local electric supply house to help us select the proper fixtures, and offered suggestions when we needed to order other supplies for another source. Quite a few of the ceiling lights required scaffolding to install as the sloped ceiling height in our family room was almost 19 feet at the peek. He arranged to pick-up and return the scaffolding at a local Home Depot. All said it required over 5 days to complete all the work and it went off flawlessly. Allan and Kevin were a pleasure to work with and offered suggestions and advice throughout the process to insure everything went right the first time. I would highly recommend Allan and will be using him again for some projects on our second floor."

"Eric our technician did a great job - professional and capable. When our microwave didn't look just right after initial install, he took the time to adjust the bracket and get it lined up just right. In addition, he took a few minutes to fix an outlet that our previous electrician had left unusable - the plug wasn't secured so if you tried to plug something in, the plug went into the wall. He also cleaned up after himself - both materials and dust. We will hire this company again."

They responded immediately to my inquiry, and they came out right away to look at my project, and give me an estimate. Lead electrician *Eddie* was fantastic. He has a great attitude, and you can tell he is eager for your business and most appreciative of it. Very friendly and professional. The quality of the work was great, and the prices fair. Eddie was always on time, and he did what he said he would do. I am pleased to recommend them, and I will hire them again for my next electrical projects."

Roof repair water proofing no electrical, Lightning Protection - Install or Repair

"Mr. Jim Gorman who is the owner of the business called me back within a half hour of my email posting. He visited my home 3 days later, inspected things, and told me what the approximate cost would be. He and his helper then installed an entire lightning protection system on both my house and a back garage/storage area. He did things exactly as I wanted in every way. Also threw in a free weathervane which increased the beauty of my home. I would have no objection to recommending this gentleman and his company to anyone who is in need of a competently installed lightning protection system for their home/property. MID-AMERICA LIGHTNING RODS is one fine company run by a man who cares about doing good work according to the latest safety codes etc. Having lost my previous retirement home to lightning, it was very important to me to get this job done and quickly because the thunderstorm season is upon us and with the climate change, those storms are very wicked, especially here out in the country where i live!"

"John Sherlock and his wife Corrine called within 1/2 hour of looking for Lightning Rod installers. He was available and was over to talk with us within one hour. He sent all his credentials and licenses and insurance coverages of his business and they came over the next morning and completed the installation extremely fast. He gave a fantastic offer, and lifetime warranty coverage and will even come over and take down system when we replace the roof and place back up at no charge! His wife even saw some plants we had not put in the garden still sitting in containers, and offered and planted them in the spaces we wanted, just to help out. Very friendly, helpful, professional, extremely knowledgeable and even suggested adding Lakeland Electrics Surge Protector protection they provide to go along with the Lightning rods. Yes would have them again on any home anytime."

"I used Fixer to replace a light fixture in my dining room. I have a very old building (over 100 years old) and always have issues with new electric fixtures, but Ricardo was great -- he figured out how to make it work using the existing junction box that I had and did it in a very timely manner. He was also very friendly and kept me updated on the progress. The light looks great and I'm very happy. Fixer seems more expensive on an hourly basis, but actually I probably would have been charged more if I went with a flat fee charge from someone else."

Frequently asked questions

  • An electrician’s cost per hour comes in between $50 and $100. It’ll vary depending on your location and the type or professional you hire. Areas with a higher cost of living can expect to pay on the higher end of that scale. Licensing level may also increase the price.
  • Usually you’ll pay a higher rate for the first hour. This covers their travel and time expense. Emergency or after-hours rates are usually higher too – expect to pay an emergency fee of up to $300 plus a higher hourly rate.

Electricians do a fair amount of larger remodeling and new construction projects but also common residential projects including:

For cost information related to the above tasks, visit our Electrical Cost Guide.

  1. Do you have a license to perform electrical work in this state?
All states require an electrical license or work performed under a Master Electrician. You should also ask how many on the job hours of experience they have.
  2. Do you have insurance?
Never use one who isn’t insured. You can ask to see proof of insurance.
  3. Do you have prior work references?
You might skip this for small jobs like installing a light or outlet. For larger projects, always get references.
  4. What are your rates?
Always ask up front. Getting a detailed quote up front is the best way to go.
  5. Who is going to do the actual work?
Often, a Master Electrician will come out to diagnose and bid on projects, but they have their apprentice and journeyman electricians do the work. This isn’t a terrible thing, in fact it’s common practice. The Master’s license is on the line with any work he supervises.
  6. Is your work warrantied or guaranteed?
Any reputable company or contractor warranties their work, usually for at least a year.
  7. Are you usually on time?
Overbooking is a frequent problem with electrical work. Often, a service call goes long, and they end up showing up at your home late. This common complaint is easily remedied with an up-front and honest discussion. If they can’t be on time, make sure they’ll call.

1. Don’t Be Misled by an Electrician’s Hourly Rates

A truly skilled, well-equipped professional with a truck full of parts that charges $100 an hour can be a much wiser choice than an inexperienced hack, working with inadequate tools and no parts, but charging much less. Often, more experienced professionals get the job done quickly with warrantied work.

2. Compare Travel Charges

Rates reflect travel times. Travel charges can have a big impact on your costs and are in some ways easier to compare than hourly rates. Many electricians spend a third or more of their time navigating traffic on their way to a jobsite. Every contractor must find a way to pay for the expense of driving each day.

3. Bundle Repair Jobs Together

When you feel it’s time to call a pro, review your list and then conduct a mini-inspection of your home. Look for faulty switches and dysfunctional or crowded outlets. When the electrician comes, you’ll save money and time by getting everything taken care of at once.

4. How to Prepare & What to Know Before the Electrician Arrives
  • Be as thorough and detailed in describing your needs to your contractor. The more they know, the quicker the job will go.
  • Before they arrive, prepare a precise list of items you want serviced. Electricians have budgeted their time for a service call. They don’t have time for additional requests once they are on site.
  • Make sure the electrical panel box is accessible. You’ll pay for the time it takes to access it.
  • Clear away fragile items, knickknacks and furniture from areas where you expect the them to work.
  • If you have questions about the project, ask them before they start. Most are happy to run you through the problem and the process of fixing it.
  • Ask about potential issues after the work is complete. During a service call a professional will spot any potential hazards.
  • You’ll lose power to parts of your home while they work. Be prepared to pause anything you’re doing during the service call.
  • In most cases you’ll have the option to either pay at the time of service or have a bill sent to you. You’ll be able to pay with cash, credit and sometimes check.
5. Install Money-Saving Electrical Fixtures
  • By switching from ordinary incandescent light fixtures or bulbs to fluorescent or LED ones, you can substantially reduce energy consumption in your home.
  • Motion detector switches can help you save money on outdoor lighting while at the same time providing very cost-effective security to your home.
  • Creative landscape lighting and indoor accent lighting can make your home more appealing to you, your guests and potential buyers in the future.
