"Jason recently installed a Generac generator for our home. As a licensed electrician, Jason showed great knowledge of residential electrical issues and is very knowledgeable of the Generac product. He took the time to answer any and all of our questions. The installation work was done very neatly and with great care and attention to detail. We found Jason to be honest and focused on customer satisfaction. We consulted with several generator installers before choosing Goldstar. We highly recommend Goldstar for generator installation as well as any residential electrical issues."

"Getting a whole house generator is a huge investment so I shopped around and got 4 quotes because of the wide range of cost estimates. Other people said the cost "would be around" an amount, and Brandon gave me a detailed exact price. Had people tell me different things about where I could put the generator. Brandon came out and explained everything and said I could put the generator where I wanted it. His crews (electrical, gas) were professional, appeared to know exactly what they were doing, worked efficiently, and left the job site very clean. Brandon provided everything I wanted--he has a long track record of installing generators, has been in business for many years, offered a 10 yr warranty, offers an annual check-up plan, and made sure I was happy with everything."

Customers say: True professional

"On time, professional and knowledgable. Could have sold me a top of the line battery but explained to me why a middle of the line for $100 less would be just as good. Keegan will be doing all my generator maintenance from now on. I highly recommend Keegan and Power Cross."

"Shaja arrived on time/early, and performed the annual furnace check before winter. All electrical components and some minor cleaning performed. It’s not as involved as the spring check with the AC/compressor, but I appreciate how AccuTemp keeps my unit in tip-top shape. Shaja was very professional and explained everything she would be doing beforehand and gave her finings to me afterwards. Some minor ductwork to be repaired or replaced at some point. I also appreciate AccuTemp being able to accommodate around my work schedule with either an AM or PM slot. They used to not offer such, and now I don’t have to take an entire day off work to meet them. I hope to see Shaja on my next cleaning in the spring, as I really like how thorough she is and the time she takes explaining everything. A price wasn’t posted for the service since I’m enrolled under AccuTemp’s Gold Service Plan which includes seasonal inspections."

"Bernard Blanchard gave me an estimate for the work to be completed. He couldn't give me an exact dollar amount for the work under the house because the wiring was laying in mud, criss-crossed from the breaker box into every direction, without junction boxes and under pipes. After several estimates of hearing the same information we went with Bernard since he understood we wanted it done correctly but wanted to keep costs down. He worked with us in every way to make sure we were satisfied. He showed up on time every day and worked by himself for 6-8 hours a day. In the end, even though Bernard couldn't tell me how much the total job would cost on the penny because of materials and labor for under our house, he was only $125 off from his estimate. THAT RARELY HAPPENS with these types of extensive problems. I would like to mention that Bernard was very determined to get our power back on the day we switched breaker boxes by 4pm. Needless to say, we were very happy with his commitment to us to restore power within 5 - 6 hours, even though it was very difficult to do. All our food in our fridge/freezer was fine and we haven't had any problems. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this man's work.

FAQs for electrical service projects in Covington, LA

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
