"Professional, timely, highly skilled and fantastic pricing. They went above and beyond on my exterior painting/staining project. I had a rotted wall on my screened porch and they completely re-framed the wall and re-screened all the panels. I had a small area of siding replaced with cedar shakes and it looks great. The paint is precise. The stain on my retaining walls and flower beds is wonderful. Great attention to detail. I highly recommend this company."

"Cory replaced 2 indoor fixtures, 2 ceiling fans and 3 outdoor fixtures and did an excellent job. Heâ s very conscientious of the little details too, making sure everything was perfect. Very friendly and honest with me, and even made sure he cleaned up after himself. I will have more work in the future and will definitely be calling him back for it. Hire them! You wonâ t be disappointed!"

"The owner Dean is fantastic. He was prompt, professional, and did the highest quality of work. Before I hired Dean, another recommended contractor told me the project was complicated and would require walls to be ripped up (which I would have had to repair). Dean did the job without ripping up walls, without a mess, and for a lower price than the other guy. Iâ ve hired him multiple times and would recommend him to family and friends."

"Randy was just awesome! He was very knowledgeable and very kind. I called him around 10 am after having a new refrigerator delivered. I explained that I needed some help with the water line that connects to the ice maker/water dispenser. He explained over the phone what likely needed to happen and then told me that he would get back with me in a couple of hours. I gave him my address and info and sure enough--2 hours later he comes, takes a look at what I need done, went to the hardware store, and bought what was needed. He then came back and installed everything and spent a good deal of time talking to me about installing our gutters. He's very friendly and I would not hesitate to call him again if we need work done on our house or remodeling. The quality of service we received definitely exceeded the price we paid to hire him. Randy, if you see this, thanks again very much for all of your help today!"

"I needed to hire a handyman in KC ( I live in St. Louis) to help address an inspection list of items that needed to be repaired before her house could be sold. Mario responded to our request promptly, provided an initial visit (at no cost) to assess the items and then proceeded to return a few days later to address the list. My Mom (87 yrs young) was very impressed with every aspect of his services. This included kitchen cabinet repairs, faucet replacement, multiple toilet repairs and other minor fixes. All the while, Mario would contact me to provide updates every step of the way. Needless to say, I would highly recommended Mario, as his customer service, attention to details and pricing are excellent."

"This was a wonderful experience. We had a toilet overflow not only into the master bathroom but about 6 feet into the master bedroom also and soaked through into the insulation in the garage. A major project. Hard to put under one category. The company that our insurance provider sent us for the cleanup seemed to specialize in being late or not showing up at all A frustrating experience. So when I needed someone to cut out wallboards paint install flooring both tile and carpet and replace the insulation in the ceiling of the garage. They were respectful of my property covering the area to insure the wallboard dust was contained. The repainting was perfect. The bathroom tile is a show stopper. The carpet is perfect. They moved the furniture They cleaned up their mess in the garage They ran the vacuum anywhere the new carpet had touched. They were respectful of us and our property. They knew what it meant to be on time and keeping us up to date on what was going on and keeping us in the mix of the time line. I could not have asked for a better experience. If I need anything else done in my house I will definitely call Thomas and his crew at DTPS. Thank you for this great opportunity to work with you"

"C&S was very professional and yet still very polite and personable. That makes perfect sense since the owner and founder is a US Armed Forces vet. Seth and Jeremiah made quick work of my flood light installation when they arrived. Earlier, Seth had recommended a supplier where I could select the fixture that worked best for my application. The labor cost was very fair and I was pleased to pay the "contractor price" for my fixture. Overall, I had a VERY GOOD experience with C&S and I would recommend this company highly."

He tried replaceing the bulbs first and when that seemed to solve the problem did NOT end up replacing the ballasts as well, saving me several hundred dollars. "12 years ago it cost me $75 to have an AC outlet replaced. This repair cost me the price of a service call ($85) because I had the parts available to install. Replacing the Ballast on a floresent fixture is not rocket science but standing on a ladder to remove/replace and strip 8 wires and make the reconnection requires coordination and balance. The Tech made quick and professional work of the job, then cleaned up the site. Very pleased. He even changed my bulbs so I didn't have to do it later. Thanks Jay"

How much do electricians typically cost?

  • Independence, Missouri Average
    $297
  • Typical Range
    $146 - $456
  • Low End - High End
    $80 - $908

Frequently asked questions

  • An electrician’s cost per hour comes in between $50 and $100. It’ll vary depending on your location and the type or professional you hire. Areas with a higher cost of living can expect to pay on the higher end of that scale. Licensing level may also increase the price.
  • Usually you’ll pay a higher rate for the first hour. This covers their travel and time expense. Emergency or after-hours rates are usually higher too – expect to pay an emergency fee of up to $300 plus a higher hourly rate.

Electricians do a fair amount of larger remodeling and new construction projects but also common residential projects including:

For cost information related to the above tasks, visit our Electrical Cost Guide.

  1. Do you have a license to perform electrical work in this state?
All states require an electrical license or work performed under a Master Electrician. You should also ask how many on the job hours of experience they have.
  2. Do you have insurance?
Never use one who isn’t insured. You can ask to see proof of insurance.
  3. Do you have prior work references?
You might skip this for small jobs like installing a light or outlet. For larger projects, always get references.
  4. What are your rates?
Always ask up front. Getting a detailed quote up front is the best way to go.
  5. Who is going to do the actual work?
Often, a Master Electrician will come out to diagnose and bid on projects, but they have their apprentice and journeyman electricians do the work. This isn’t a terrible thing, in fact it’s common practice. The Master’s license is on the line with any work he supervises.
  6. Is your work warrantied or guaranteed?
Any reputable company or contractor warranties their work, usually for at least a year.
  7. Are you usually on time?
Overbooking is a frequent problem with electrical work. Often, a service call goes long, and they end up showing up at your home late. This common complaint is easily remedied with an up-front and honest discussion. If they can’t be on time, make sure they’ll call.

1. Don’t Be Misled by an Electrician’s Hourly Rates

A truly skilled, well-equipped professional with a truck full of parts that charges $100 an hour can be a much wiser choice than an inexperienced hack, working with inadequate tools and no parts, but charging much less. Often, more experienced professionals get the job done quickly with warrantied work.

2. Compare Travel Charges

Rates reflect travel times. Travel charges can have a big impact on your costs and are in some ways easier to compare than hourly rates. Many electricians spend a third or more of their time navigating traffic on their way to a jobsite. Every contractor must find a way to pay for the expense of driving each day.

3. Bundle Repair Jobs Together

When you feel it’s time to call a pro, review your list and then conduct a mini-inspection of your home. Look for faulty switches and dysfunctional or crowded outlets. When the electrician comes, you’ll save money and time by getting everything taken care of at once.

4. How to Prepare & What to Know Before the Electrician Arrives
  • Be as thorough and detailed in describing your needs to your contractor. The more they know, the quicker the job will go.
  • Before they arrive, prepare a precise list of items you want serviced. Electricians have budgeted their time for a service call. They don’t have time for additional requests once they are on site.
  • Make sure the electrical panel box is accessible. You’ll pay for the time it takes to access it.
  • Clear away fragile items, knickknacks and furniture from areas where you expect the them to work.
  • If you have questions about the project, ask them before they start. Most are happy to run you through the problem and the process of fixing it.
  • Ask about potential issues after the work is complete. During a service call a professional will spot any potential hazards.
  • You’ll lose power to parts of your home while they work. Be prepared to pause anything you’re doing during the service call.
  • In most cases you’ll have the option to either pay at the time of service or have a bill sent to you. You’ll be able to pay with cash, credit and sometimes check.
5. Install Money-Saving Electrical Fixtures
  • By switching from ordinary incandescent light fixtures or bulbs to fluorescent or LED ones, you can substantially reduce energy consumption in your home.
  • Motion detector switches can help you save money on outdoor lighting while at the same time providing very cost-effective security to your home.
  • Creative landscape lighting and indoor accent lighting can make your home more appealing to you, your guests and potential buyers in the future.
