"The Stump needing removal was the remnants of a tree which had been cut in order to replace septic tank field lines. This particular tree was over 40 years in age and its trunk and route system were grown and gnarled and tangled through not soil but stone primarily. There was a matte of surface roots covering the lower part of the driveway and across the top of this very steep and dangerous location. When Shannon pulled in with his trailer holding a piece of equipment I have never seen the likes of before that day. That piece of equipment was designed to grind a stump in the way a caterpillar moves. The equipment is from all appearances fastidiously maintained and to get to the start it had to make its way across a wide open trench which we covered in three-quarter inch plywood sheets in order to keep the equipment safe. This was the only route to get to the stump which sat on the crest of a steep, well very steep hill. It was amazing to see how adept Shannon is in managing that complex a piece of equipment he was using for this job. I had had two other attempts made to remove the stump and I figured when I saw that Swiss engineered Caterpillar looking thing that this was the piece of equipment and the right man to do the job. It was a dangerous and difficult job and I cannot think Shannon enough for his skills, kindness and consideration, his respect for my property, removing all of the debris so that the septic tank team could come back in the next day to resume their work, and for just being a great guy. Thanks to Shannon I had running water and septic tank service within a couple of days again. Shannon, well done."

"I first hired Outdoor Construction Services to install a 70ft x 12ft driveway at my home. I was extremely impressed by the professionalism of this company. They were on time everyday, courteous to our needs at home while they worked, and delivered exactly what they promised. I have since hired them for other excavation/driveway jobs and they continue to deliver each and every time. I highly recommend this company for your needs. You can rely on their expertise and their work. I will continue to use them in the future."

Customers say: Quality work

"After consulting with several companies about our backyard drainage, we made the right choice with Pender's. They did a great job making sure we found the best solution to keep the rain water draining away from our home. Communication was excellent which is hard to find. And once the rain halted long enough for them to begin, they stayed on the job to get it done as quickly as possible. They were upfront about pricing so we were prepared and able to make decisions. Overall not a single complaint... thank you!!!"

FAQs for excavation projects in Birmingham, AL

Depth depends on the type of installation and the regulations in your area. Water supply lines typically require 24 inches, while drainage pipes are often installed 36 inches below grade. For most general projects, a depth of 12 to 24 inches and a width of about eight inches is sufficient. Sticking to these specs keeps your utilities safe, code-compliant, and easier to maintain later.

When you need to run utilities underground, you’ve got two main options: boring or trenching. Boring employs directional drilling to install utilities without exposing a continuous channel, while trenching requires excavating an open channel to place utilities securely. Directional drilling preserves landscape integrity, whereas trenching provides direct access for installation, albeit with greater surface disruption. This clear comparison helps you select the method best suited to your project.

Plan on 12 hours to dig 100 linear feet when the soil is cooperative and you can work continuously. This timeframe applies when work is performed consistently and methodically. Factors such as rocky soil, tree roots, obstructions, and frozen ground increase the overall duration, demanding extra planning and effort. Comprehensive operational planning ensures that every challenge is managed efficiently and the project is completed on schedule.

If you want your yard to look untouched, laying fresh sod over the trench is the quickest fix. New sod needs 30 to 45 days to root and blend with the rest of your lawn. A local sod pro can provide you with a firm timeline and tips to ensure the grass takes hold and maintains your curb appeal.
