"The two guys, Toney, and Jason, who came to clean the flues did an excellent job. They kept the area clean, and did a thorough job. They covered the floors before beginning work with a large black cloth to keep everything clean too. I had also asked that they put a cap back on that blew off a while back, while they were there cleaning the flues, and they did that at no additional charge. Tony recommended a stainless steel chimney cap to cover all three flues, for a pellet, boiler, and wood stove. The price quoted for that will be $500, but it will keep things out and keep the liner for the boiler from deteriorating more than it is. Initially Tony thought the liner may be already to the point of replacing it, but after looking at it while on the roof, he said it wasn’t as bad as he initially suspected, and I could go at least a few more years with it. Which is an honest assessment, also good to hear."

"Although we had no experience in the process of selecting and purchasing granite, Pacific Stone and Tile were pretty solid in their guidance, measurement and eventual installation process.  Certain aspects of the project like determining if a backsplash is desired, what type of edge would look good and most importantly the selection of the specific stone are tricky but PS&T were very helpful and their sales contact Sal provided great insight into the options on both an aesthetic and practical level.
Some practical things we never considered (i.e. don't add a backsplash if you intend to tile above as the transition is clumsy looking) and the edging and corner transitions were presented and discussed to our satisfaction and a really nice result.
A couple of very important things to consider... this company is headquartered in Massachusetts and IMHO it is ESSENTIAL to see the stone in person to ensure your selection is consistent with your preferences and expectations. We live in NW Connecticut so it was a 90 minute drive, but so glad we made the trip.  They have the whole slab there and Sal walked us thru the yard and pointed out the unique nature of certain lots and had a piece of wood which matched our cabinets to support our selection. You can also see the edge options and corner cut options so I'd strongly encourage a visit to their showroom.
The workmanship is excellent, the interaction as we moved thru the process of stone selection, measuring and subsequent installation was also pretty good.  I'd give them an 'A' overall and would certainly suggest the company to others.

"In all our dealings with Brian Rudd, he was always very professional and courteous.  He definitely worked with us to provide the products that we were looking for and only the work we needed done.  In our case, we had replaced most of the window Brick mold with a PVC product during an earlier project, so this siding project left the window trim intact.  We also wanted to retain the existing look of the house, which required some curved (arched) openings around the garage.  This was all written into the proposal.
The crew that did the actual work was a pleasure to deal with.  They were professional, courteous, respectful of our property, cleaned up at the end of the day, and most importantly, did a quality job installing the new siding.  There were a number of questions that came up during the project, as usually happens on most projects.  These were brought to our attention and discussed such that a solution was found that was acceptable to us.  Mark and his crew were excellent at not just installing the standard product, but doing it in a way that was very clever.  For example, we have a breeze way between the garage and the entry to our house.  This was to be solid soffit material.  Instead of just nailing up the soffit, they created a Board and Batten look, that played off the reverse board and batten product.  This was not detailed in the initial proposal, and was suggested and implemented by Mark.  Mark also ended up re-enforcing the garage arch in such a way that it really retained the original look of the 1 inch cedar board and batten.  We are delighted with the way both of these sections came out.
We are extremely pleased with the look of the LP SmartSide product.  We have gotten nothing but compliments from neighbors and visitors regarding how good the house looks.  If contemplating the LP SmartSide Cedar Shingle product, please note that this must be face nailed.  We were not totally prepared for how this would look.  Once the nails are painted (with the same paint that the siding was painted with), this really became a non-issue.  There were some places where the nails went below the surface of the siding (like the nail was counter synced).  These are fixed with either caulk or wood filler, and then when painted, it is also a non-issue.
In summary, our experience with Vista was a very positive one.  When issues arose, they were corrected.  They did what they said they would do.  There was never an issue getting in touch with Brian during the course of the project."

FAQs for fireplace and wood stove service projects in Block Island, RI

Start with a professional inspection. If damage is limited to a few bricks or the crown, a targeted repair helps keep costs and disruption to a minimum. Severe leaning, widespread mortar failure, or major fire damage usually signals it’s time for a complete teardown and rebuild. Your contractor will outline both price tags, but remember that rebuilding a failing stack is often cheaper than repeated patch jobs and the water leaks or fire hazards they allow.

Cracks provide water with an easy path into the masonry, weakening the bricks and mortar and increasing the risk of collapse or fire. Gaps can also let hot gases and sparks escape into attic spaces. Call a chimney pro as soon as you see cracking so they can seal small joints or recommend a larger rebuild before minor damage turns into a costly emergency.

Smoke rolling back into the room often indicates a blocked flue, a broken damper, or a drafting issue. Have a sweep inspect the damper, flue liner, and any obstructions right away. Most fixes involve clearing debris, repairing the liner, or adjusting the damper so the fireplace pulls air correctly. Don’t light another fire until a professional pinpoints the cause and confirms your system is venting safely.

Most policies cover chimney repairs caused by a sudden, covered event, such as lightning, a fallen tree, or a house fire. They won’t cover damage that stems from neglected maintenance or everyday wear. Review your policy or contact your agent before scheduling work to determine what documentation your insurer requires and what costs you will be responsible for.

Component life spans vary. Clay tile or cast-in-place liners last close to 50 years, while stainless-steel liners last 15 to 20 years. Mortar requires attention every 25 to 30 years, while crowns last 50 to 75 years. Use these numbers as a maintenance roadmap: schedule regular inspections, budget for future upgrades, and replace parts before age-related cracks develop into more significant problems.
