Small jobs welcome

I enjoy painting! I look at each project and think if this was my home how would I like it to look. I have been painting for many years. I only accept payment when the job is done and the home owner is happy. I am a middle school teacher and do painting work when not teaching. I am a Christian and do my best to reflect that in my work.

"Calico Painting is absolutely the best painting company we have ever hired here and in other locations we have lived. Dean, the owner of the company, is a totally dedicated and honest professional who provided every option to us, made valuable, totally informed suggestions as to the ultimate choice we made and then accomplished the job outstandingly by every measure. He accommodated our every change without issue, just adjusted and made it perfect. The house exterior looks great--like brand new. And his price range was very competitive for the huge scope of the job. He and his crew were always on time, worked through a week of the hottest summer temperatures (in the 110 range) in the High Desert this year doing exactly what he agreed would be done, and much more. He is a tough taskmaster and a perfectionist--a top notch professional in every respect. I marveled at how he and his crew got it all done and went well beyond what was expected to make it perfect. Dean made sure every detail, no matter how small, was done well. He takes great pride in his work. The company cleaned up the job site and put it back better than it was before the painting job. I could not have found a better painting contractor to paint the outside of our home. In fact, we are planning to hire his company again when we repaint the interior of the house. He and his company are the best and have earned our business and greatest respect. Want the best painting contractor? Call Calico Painting and Dean. I have the utmost admiration for Dean and his company. Wilson, Apple Valley, CA"

"At first I was just looking for wallpaper for my bedroom and some fresh paint for the living room and kitchen. Nothing drastic, same colors but the old paint was already three years old and had some stains from daily use. The wallpaper I wanted was hard to find so Diego suggested a wall covering with wooden slats. They showed me some ideas and I also looked for inspiration. I had no idea something so simple could look this beautiful. In the end they handled everything, what started as a simple wallpaper replacement turned into a completely new bedroom. When they finished, it looked nothing like it did before. I was pleasantly surprised with expert home builders? work"

FAQs for painting projects in Helendale, CA

Most homeowners opt for semi-gloss or high-gloss paint to make the baseboards stand out against the walls. If you’d rather keep things subtle, matching the wall sheen with eggshell or satin also works well. When your trim has nicks or dents, reach for a flatter, matte finish—it hides minor imperfections better than a shiny coat.

Stripping old paint from trim costs $1 to $3 per linear foot. Pros use specialized tools and techniques to lift away existing layers without gouging the wood, then prep the surface for a fresh finish. While it adds to your budget, proper removal protects the molding and sets the stage for a smoother, longer-lasting paint job.

Tackling the baseboards first often leads to crisper lines. Painting trim first lets you tape off the boards instead of the walls, so you’re less likely to splatter color where you don’t want it. Any stray marks on the wall get covered when you roll on the final coat, making the whole process faster and tidier.

You can absolutely paint baseboards in place. Leaving them installed avoids the risk of cracking or misaligning the boards when they’re reattached. With thorough cleaning, light sanding, and careful taping, a pro—or an experienced DIYer—can achieve a sharp, factory-smooth finish while saving you the hassle of prying off and reinstalling trim.

Painting almost always beats replacement in cost. Swapping out baseboards runs about $150 in DIY materials or roughly $1,100 with a pro, while repainting costs about $50 in supplies and $1 to $5 per square foot for labor. Unless the boards are warped or severely damaged, a fresh coat delivers the same visual upgrade for a fraction of the price.

Paintable caulk and wood filler are the go-to fixes for nail holes in baseboards. Wood filler sands flush for a glass-smooth surface, while caulk provides a flexible seal that won’t crack as the house settles. Either way, patching those tiny divots before you prime ensures your finished baseboards look seamless.
