"Original project was estimated with removing existing fence posts (18 total), leveling to proper fence height, pouring cement to set repositioned post, and replacing broken gate hinges. Estimate provided by Eli. When A&E arrived and started removing first couple of posts, Eli?s father, most experienced member of crew, noticed the existing post cement had not heaved. So he felt removing existing posts was not necessary. Instead he recommended pounding the posts back down into existing concrete until level and drilling holes in posts to allow new concrete to create more of an anchor to keep them from sliding out of concrete base. This eliminated a lot of manual work and lessened damage to yard. I thought this was a good idea and thought the cost of the job would reflect a lesser amount since this cut the total job time more than half. Instead they did not adjust the bill accordingly. I would expect a company to treat their customers fairly and not overcharge when the planned work changes without the customer complaining or requesting such. Instead I ended paying the original estimate ($1,400), which equates to approx. $150 / hour (crew of 3), plus materials. Total job completed in 2.5 - 3 hours, which was great. I think this was extremely high for 1 highly skill worker and 2 apprentices. I gave A&E 4 stars because they did do a good job. Fence looks great. I just feel like it should have been a little less $ for the amount of work they ended up having to do. I did examine the original estimate and it only stated leveling the fence, no specifics on how this was to be done. But verbally it was understood they would have to dig out new fence posts, re-level and re-cement. Lessons learned on my part?get a detailed contract and if the actual work deviates, then adjust final bill."

FAQs for chain link fence repair or alter projects in Ames, IA

Installing a concrete reinforcement slab significantly boosts the stability and longevity of your chain link fence. This reinforcement creates a strong foundation that protects the fence from erosion, burrowing animals, and high winds. The installation cost is $4 to $10 per square foot, and this robust base minimizes the need for future repairs while extending the overall lifespan of your fence.

Repairing minor damage such as small holes is far more cost‑effective than replacing significant portions of your chain link fence. Minor repairs cost between $100 and $200, while replacing full sections demands an investment of $1,000 to $2,000. For a fence that is 20 years old or older, having an expert assess it now can prevent repeated repair expenses and secure long‑term durability, thereby safeguarding overall fence performance.

If you'd rather remove your chain link fence than repair or replace it, professionals charge between $3 and $5 per linear foot for the job. There may be additional costs involved if there is extra labor needed, like relocating plants or separating the chain-link fence from other existing structures. This also does not include waste disposal fees.

Chain link fences have an average lifespan of 20 years with regular cleaning and maintenance. They stand out as one of the most affordable and durable fencing options available to homeowners and businesses alike. Chain link fences often last five to 10 years longer than comparable wooden fence installations. Chain-link fences made with a vinyl coating often exceed these estimates, providing even greater longevity and weather resistance.
