"My husband and I used DB Pipitone Company for some upgrades to our house when we moved in a couple of years ago for recessed lighting, new plugs, and an A/C installed outside. We are currently renovating our kitchen and asked again that he come out to move the plugs around, add a circuit for a garbage disposal, more recessed lighting, under cabinet lighting, and adding a couple of ceiling fans around the house. We have been very happy with their service, punctuality, professionalism, politeness, and cleanliness. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable electrician at a good value! We will be running power to our garage for shop equipment and lighting soon and plan on calling Donovan again! "

"I have never had a company try to take advantage of me for being a woman like Kelley Brothers did! I called them for service on my Generac generator and they made me pre pay $1,300 to replace my control board. Once the tech was here he knocked on my door to tell me I had to pay for another part that was $180. The lady in the office has zero information on that payment. She doesn’t even know what I was charged for and if I wouldn’t have had my bank statement they would have denied taking the money at all! After I paid the $180 the tech said he didn’t even have the part and left. He returned a few weeks later, worked on my generator for maybe 40mins, and was knocking on my door again. This time he told me I needed another part that was over $600. When I asked questions he told me that he already spoke to my husband as if he couldn’t be bothered with some “house wife”. I didn’t pay him and I received an invoice stating the job wouldn’t be finished until I paid the entire amount. That didn’t sit right with me considering my generator wasn’t running and I was already over $1,500 in! I called another company for a second opinion and they came out and had everything running within 30mins! The only part that they replaced was the CONTROL BOARD that I had payed $1,300 for in the beginning of all of this! The other $600+ part DID NOT need replaced and my generator is running beautifully! The other company charged me $800 for everything! They also replaced some spark plugs and went through the entire generator to make sure everything was working properly! I’m currently waiting for Kelley Brothers to refund all of the money that I paid them since they didn’t replace anything that I payed them for and after sending multiple emails they have not contacted me! As a stay at home mom with a first responder husband I am so disappointed in the way they took advantage of me! If I could give a ZERO star review I would! Do not do business with Kelley Brothers unless you are ok with supporting a sexist scammer company!"

"Charles and Joyce from Homestead were great to work with. From the time they came out to quote our generator, placement, installation through final inspections. Charles has great attention to detail. They treated our home as if it was theirs. Joyce helped with all the documentation and warranty process. Great people to work with."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Ann Arbor, MI

While homeowners with substantial electrical knowledge might technically attempt a subpanel installation, most local building departments require permits and inspections for this type of work. Professional electricians understand local code requirements, can obtain necessary permits, and ensure the installation meets safety standards. Given the significant safety risks associated with incorrect electrical work, most homeowners benefit from hiring a licensed professional.

A standard subpanel installation takes an average of four to eight hours. This timeframe may extend if you're installing multiple subpanels or adding specialized circuits like those for spa equipment. Factors such as difficult access points, complex wiring paths, or permit processing times can also affect the overall project duration.

Adding a subpanel doesn't directly reduce electricity consumption or lower your utility bills. A subpanel simply redistributes power from your main panel to additional circuits. However, organizing your electrical system more efficiently may help prevent overloaded circuits and the associated problems. For actual cost savings, consider energy-efficient appliances and lighting instead.

The appropriate subpanel size depends on your specific electrical requirements. Consider the number and type of devices you'll be powering, potential future needs, and the capacity of your main electrical panel. An electrician can perform a load calculation to determine the most suitable amperage rating for your situation, ensuring you have adequate power without overpaying for unnecessary capacity.

A main electrical panel connects directly to your utility's power supply and contains your home's primary service disconnect. It distributes electricity throughout your entire house. A subpanel, by contrast, receives power from the main panel and redistributes it to a specific area of your home. Think of the main panel as the primary distribution point and the subpanel as a secondary branch that extends your electrical system's reach.

While electrical upgrades aren't as immediately visible as kitchen or bathroom renovations, they can contribute to your home's functionality and safety. Prospective buyers often appreciate updated electrical systems that can accommodate modern power demands. A properly installed subpanel that provides additional capacity for workshops, home offices, or future expansions could be an attractive feature for certain buyers, though the direct impact on home value varies by market.
