"Replacing your home’s siding is probably one of the biggest home improvement projects you’re ever going to undertake in your lifetime as a homeowner. It’s certainly one of the most expensive. There’s a lot that goes into making this decision. First, you have to determine your budget. Then, you need to decide on the type of siding you want (cheapest? most expensive? somewhere in the middle?), the color, but most importantly, WHO is going to do the work. Finding the right contractor, for me, is the most important part of this process. Let’s face it, siding is siding is siding and unless you’re looking for some type of specialized product, replacement siding is pretty much the same from contractor to contractor. You can’t say the same thing about the company that you hire to do the job. You must feel comfortable with the contractor, and, perhaps most importantly, you must feel that they aren’t taking advantage of you and that they are going to follow through on the terms that are outlined in the contract that you sign with them. My wife and I found all of this and more with Hector Cabrera and his company, Emmaty. After we decided to move forward with residing our house, we researched companies in the area (we didn’t want to use a national chain) and my wife found Emmaty on Angie’s List. The overwhelmingly positive reviews really got our attention. Looking at Emmaty’s website, we also were impressed to learn that it is a family-owned company as Hector’s wife, Madeline, runs the business side of the company. That was a HUGE plus for us. When we saw the same type of reviews at the Better Business Bureau’s website, we knew we had to call for an estimate. Meeting Hector was a pleasure and we knew immediately that he knows what he’s talking about and is very passionate about his work. Within a few days of meeting us at our home, he returned with a quote to replace the siding and one leaky window, and have seamless gutters installed, all well within our budget. (Other quotes we had just for the siding were well above Emmaty’s, one as much as $12,000 more.) Along with the quote, Hector showed us a slide deck presentation on his tablet that explained the siding product they use, how the process works, and what we can expect. Hector’s crew is fantastic. They showed up on time every day and immediately set to work. They’re professional, courteous, and just don’t stop moving. Hector himself came by often to monitor their progress and check in with us to make sure we were happy with the work. He even helped install the gutters and cleaned up on the last day. To say we are happy is an understatement. Updating our home’s siding is something we’ve wanted to do for years and we are so excited and pleased that we hired Emmaty to do the job. Every day for the week they were here felt like Christmas morning because we’d walk around the house, marveling at how much work had been done and seeing the house being transformed. We cannot say enough about Hector, Madeline, and Emmaty. Customer service is THE most important factor for me when it comes to ANY type of business transaction, be it at a restaurant, store, or making a large purchase. If I don’t get good customer service, I’ll never return to that business. Hector and Emmaty are EXACTLY what we had hoped for in a contractor and we can’t wait for them to return in the spring to talk about replacing our home’s windows. We know the job will be done right by excellent people at a fair price."

"These guys are the greatest! They saved us a lot of money! We had a dumpster before the bullbag and for 3 tons of material and a week rental of the dumpster it cost us $486! We own the bullbag now, had a full bag - 3.5 tons - picked up and it was only $229! We didn't have any rental charges, excess weight fees, or anything! These guys did everything they said they would! OMG! Everyone should use these guys!!!!! Also, I got the bullbag back! I never have to buy another one and its ready to use whenever I feel like doing a clean out or renovation."

"I wanted to maximize the space in my basement art studio and asked Jane Estella, principal architect at Artios Architects, to look at it. Very quickly she assessed that if I removed the coal bin in my 100-year-old house basement I would achieve my objective. I followed up and am very happy. I owe a lot to Jane's vision for an art studio with better space."

"If you are looking to have a deck built or rebuilt, then choose ProBuilt, LLC. I had 3 companies come and provide me with ideas and quotes for this project. Bill immediately came by, took measurements and pictures. From there, we discussed ideas for the new outdoor space. He then provided me with a design and quote. His quote was extremely reasonable, and the design was exactly what I wanted. And because he was so reasonable, I was able to afford more than what was initially planned. His crew arrived on schedule and on time every day. They demolished the old decking, poured new concrete footings according to code, framed and created the new space. The joints were cut tight, boards evenly spaced, and you could tell they took pride in their work. Each day, before they left, the work space was clean, free of debris and ready for the next day. I immediately knew I made the right choice in selecting ProBuilt LLC. They do both exterior and interior work. I will use them again."

"We contacted Ray Parker some months back when we were in the process of looking to add an in-law apartment to our current property.  We already had a full set of plans so we needed the opinion of a few contractors and then bids for the work.  The work included tearing down an existing breezeway connecting the house and a 1-car garage as well as removing the garage.  In their place we were going to put in a new, larger 3 season breezeway and then build a 750 square foot in-law suite with basement.  The first meeting with Ray was extensive, we spent better than an hour talking about the project and walking through the existing structures to see what was involved.  Ray spent a considerable amount of time looking over the plans and offering any suggestions he could think of, especially since he has done a similar project at his own house.  His insights were invaluable.  Instead of giving us an off the hip figure for the project he had all of his sub-contractors come through and look at the project and the property to give the most accurate numbers they could.  Ray was very good about working to get to a budget that we could manage and in the end was the best price of the 3 contractors we had bid.  Had we moved forward with the project we would have chosen Ray as the GC and I am confident that the project would have been well done.  He was professional and considerate throughout the entire process and I very much appreciated that he insisted on taking the time to get a bid that was accurate not just shooting a number he thought we would like or something that was "ballpark"
If you are considering renovations or additions and especially if you are looking to add an in-law suite I would highly recommend speaking with Ray before you start the project.

FAQs for shelter or outbuilding building service projects in Ashland, MA

A bomb shelter is an abode built to withstand disaster. Bomb shelters may refer to a space or bunker that can protect inhabitants through a hypothetical nuclear attack, apocalypse, or any other massive crisis. People usually build bomb shelters underground and stock them to live there a few days to a month at a time. Doomsday bunkers accommodate long-term living rather than just through a short crisis.

Builders construct bomb shelters with reinforced steel, box culvert, concrete, or other durable materials (but many professionals do not recommend shipping containers, as they’re not designed to live underground. If building underground, you’ll first have to excavate land before building the actual structure. You’ll have to implement air and water filtration systems, septic systems, and power supply.

It takes a lot of experience to safely and legally construct a bomb shelter, not to mention make sure it’s fit to live in for extended periods of time. It’s best to talk to a residential structural engineer near you for proper guidance.

The current standard filtration systems require filtering both air and water. For air, you’ll want an NBC filter system, which both domestic and international producers make. NBC stands for Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical, which filters out all three. If you’re only building your shelter for natural disasters, chemical attacks, and biological attacks, you may opt for the less expensive HEPA filter system.

Water filtration requires the same level of care. You’ll likely want to have a large water storage capacity to survive short-term disasters. For long-term living, you’ll want to have a water filtration system.

Rising S bunker prices depend on the size, ranging anywhere from $20,000 to $9 million. Their least expensive model is 96 square feet while their most expensive model has a gym, swimming pool, hot tub, and bowling alley.

  • Mini: $45,500

  • Standard Bomb Shelter: $67,500–$109,500

  • Silver Leaf: $140,000–$182,500

  • Admiral: $180,000–$500,000

  • Xtreme: $450,000–$780,000

  • Xtreme Bunker Complex: $840,000–$1,830,000

  • Luxury Series: $3,800,000–$9,600,000

You almost always need a permit to build a bunker on land with any type of public utilities running through it. You’ll want to check with your local building code enforcement agency to see if this is the case for your area.

Because you’re building a structural component that often requires electricity, water, and sewage services, you’ll need to apply for permits to attach these utilities to your new property. However, off-grid-only units in rural areas may not need all or any of the permitting you’d normally find in more urban settings.

To survive a nuclear blast, you’ll need to have your bunker at least three feet underground. However, it’s usually advisable to put it further underground. To survive a close strike, you’ll want to have the bunker at least 10 feet down and with five-foot thick reinforced concrete. However, knowing exactly how deep to build depends on the size of the blast you’re trying to avoid. Most bunkers don’t need to be more than 5 feet below the ground.
