"Need to be very clear with your expectations, and ask if they are doing the work or subcontracting it out. They sub'd our work out and had a different guy perform the final walk-thru prior to work starting that didn't listen and didn't relay the work that was called out. On start day, they realized it would take at least an extra day and another $500, although they had received pictures, videos and done multiple walk-thrus prior to work starting, had a written estimate, etc., etc. It ultimately took three days longer than estimated. When the work was "done" we ended up having to call them out to fix a very poorly finished area in our kitchen. They told us that because it would have back splash, it is left in a "rough" state that is the responsibility of the person placing the back splash even though I very specifically said it needed to be complete minus texture. They also mentioned a couple of times that the corners aren't done to a finish state because the painters should re-caulk the corners to hide the imperfections and they also suck in a "oh, don't forget any minor cracks after work is completed is not our responsibility" as the owner left on the start morning. I had to cut out a 2 foot square section to redo an area that was explicitly called out, blend and re-texture as it was around a retrofit light switch box. Had to patch another area that had a 3/4" gap around another switch, a section in our kitchen wall where it looked like a trowel was set flat on the wall (between two windows) and had about a 4" x 8" divot. At that point, they had already been out once to fix problems and we didn't want them stepping foot back in our house. When we started prepping for paint, we realized even more problems. We requested to have the entire surface of an open concept kitchen/dining room/living room re-textured, instead of blended to have a uniform look after removing walls and remodeling. Apparently we should have removed the baseboards as there is essentially a groove around the entire room about 1/2" above all of the baseboard from where they stopped applying the mud. We had to find taller baseboard to cover up that sloppy work too. We had been very clear that they could patch or replace at their discretion to make walls uniform. Cost was not the concern, quality was. We had also said, they didn't need to worry about protecting the floors as they were being replaced, so they partially covered other items. Our refrigerator, garbage can, brand new windows, tools they borrowed, front door and areas down our hallway had drywall mud all over the place. Luckily we decided to replace our front door after they had finished, as the painted surface (black) has permanent white stains that will not come off after multiple attempts to remove. Most of the other items eventually wiped clean, but the windows were very very very very explicitly called out to make sure they protected as they were not even a week old. On a good note, the vaulted ceilings came out"
