"Vins Construction and his crew are amazing!! My family and I could not be happier with the job they did!!! Re-building front stairs for my porch and installing all new railings, keeping with the nineteenth-century historic feel of my home. They also rebuilt the railings for my side entrance and I am excited to say will be rebuilding my back deck as well! We met them for an estimate and they were promptly here first thing in the morning the very next day beginning their work! I could not believe how quickly they scheduled my project, and how efficient, caring, kind, and accommodating they were to dedicating themselves to creating everything exactly how we wanted it to look. They have such passion and pride in the work they do and it shows! I run a BNB and they were very thoughtful in making adjustments that created a safe environment for my guests! I cannot wait to have them here again for more projects! Their energy is contagious! I am very grateful to have found them and most definitely we highly recommend them! Great job guys!!! Thank you for everything!!! See you soon!"

"Two jobs were done by Dylan & Monroe. I am very pleased with outcome of both projects. 1. Rebuild weathered end of front porch, included resetting large windows. 2. Replace exterior cement steps and add railing. Old cement steps demolished and replaced with modern wood like material and iron railing added for safety, Work was done on schedule. Also, Dylan would promptly respond to my calls and send photos of progress as I live in another state."

"Great Work! Kieran and his crew did an amazing job replacing a cedar siding wall on the exterior of our home. They were meticulous, timely and clean. We will be using this company again for a new deck and for some framework and window replacement. Highly recommended!"

"SZ was great! Haider and his crew were professional, reliable, and highly skilled. We had porch stairs that were rotting to the point of being dangerous. They provided a quote with two days of my initial request and started the project within days. After just two days of work we have brand new, sturdy porch steps. I highly recommend them!"

"We just had Scarpone and Sons replace our roof in the middle of winter!! They chose the perfect day to rip off the existing roof and replace it in a little over a day. Lucky for us it stopped snowing just long enough for them to do what they do. They were efficient, fast, and did an excellent job. The roof no longer leaks and we are so happy! I highly recommend them to do YOUR roof. In fact we recommended them to a couple that were thinking of replacing their roof."

"Needless to say, we were impressed with all the very qualified contractors we interviewed for our project. Our decision to hire Gerald with D & G was based on the knowledge he displayed about what issues and complications he would encounter replacing an older structure and his plans to overcome each issue. He knew immediately what would be found underneath when the flooring was ripped off and what would need to be done in order to meet the standards for the type of decking we wanted. He gave us a reasonable price, a reasonable timetable and honest terms for payment that was based on our satisfaction of his work each step of the way. We even decided to have him repair and paint the wood trim on the house as well as install a new front door with sidelights. I would recommend D & G Construction in a heartbeat for his honesty and professionalism. "

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Buffalo, NY

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
