"John is a perfectionist, treats your project as if it was his home. As with any home improvement questions and changes come up. John always informed us immediately and the final decision was ours. The quality of our finished project is awesome! We live on the green belt and the frequent walkers watched progress and commented frequently on the great job and looks of our deck. We are loving the completed deck. After the shakiness of a 40 year old deck itâ s a joy to walk out on a sturdy beautiful deck. As a bonus the little extra touches make it a beautiful addition to our home. You wonâ t do better than John Donaldson as your contractor."

"I first hired Daniel and his team to scrape my front yard to get it ready for spring planting, and to plant four new trees. They did such a good job, I was thrilled to hire them right away to build a new retaining wall in my 100-year old house basement. They worked within the timeframe I needed them to, as I also was working with another company to replace my furnace. The wall came out better than I could have imagined! When I had some leakage problems with my sprinkler system, they came and worked on that, as well as replaced an old valve. They went above and beyond on my multiple projects. Daniel and his team are pros! I highly recommend them and look forward to using their services again! Thank you D&D!"

Small jobs welcome

"Conscientious. informative, flexile, professional, on time and problem solver. We hired Eric and his crew to replace old deck boards with Trex boards and railings. You will not have to brace yourself for all the problems one worries about with a home project. I could not be more impressed with the work quality or the attention to detail by Eric and Owen and Jerry - his employees."

"Fernando and his crew lead by Manuel did a fantastic job on my landscape project. Fernando is a great communicator. I was kept in the loop about the project every step of the way. When questions or concerns came up, Fernando addressed them with our desired outcome as his main priority. The project outcome exceeded my expectations. I would not hesitate to hire him again. I highly recommend!"

Customers say: Super punctual

"Our project was quite large and turned out amazing! We removed our old deck and replaced it with an amazing stamped concrete patio, replaced the driveway with an added parking pad, and put in new fencing with gates. Gabe and his team did a great job in a timely manner, showing up to work hard until it was completed. Everyone that was on the project was always very nice and professional. Gabe’s communication and vision was impeccable walking us through every step and helping us see the potential of our new space. He is very receptive to any concerns and responded quickly with a solution to make sure everything was done exactly the way we envisioned."

"I met Fernando and Juan after having several estimates for a demolition of an old, rotting seating area to be replaced with a flagstone patio in my backyard. They had some different ideas than the other folks, so I went with them, and I am glad I did! They worked efficiently and professionally, always keeping me up to date with any issues that arose or aesthetic decisions I could make. They finished the job on time, and they added several small touches that I wasn't expecting, like filling in some holes on my sidewalk that was adjacent to the patio, laying down sod to make a gap to my yard look nicer, and adding small flagstones to fill other gaps. These guys are great, and I'll be sure to hire them again on my next landscaping project."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Castle Rock, CO

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
