"Quality work with a lifetime guarantee on no cracks and a dry basement. I originally had a problem with the way an employee explained the warranty to me. She indicated that it was void because I had not contacted the company within 30 of my brother's death. However, a spokesperson from the company today told me that that was incorrect information. They are restoring the lifetime warranty in my name at no charge. I am pleased with how they handled my complaint."

"Things I liked: David and his crew were extremely polite, personable, and professional. (The "three ps" of a good contractor.) They were willing to work around my schedule, particularly because of the later start. These guys were fast...like really fast. Got my job done in a day! Everything was explained to me, and I got some instructions on care and limitations of finishing over top of their trenches. They came back to do some brief touch-up work the next day, and left everything clean and tidy. David even worked around some of the goofy stuff in my basement. You know, the stuff you might find in a 100+ year-old house. All of the various drains, services, and pipes were left untouched, which is impressive because some of them were veeeeeery close to the perimeter where they were installing the drain. Lastly, my basement is now dry. Had a deluge of rain immediately following the work and I have not seen a drop! :D Things that could be improved on: Price - I mean, a price can always be lower, but their price is definitely fair for what is included. Their system was more expensive than some of their competitors, but there were several things about it that I preferred over others. Punctuality - The digital appointment card I was sent was for 8 AM so I was under the impression that they would arrive then (or soon after). I called at 9 to check in and was told they'd be there at 12:30 PM. This was not a problem for me, but I wish I had been told that earlier. Granted, the appointment I was sent could have just be left at the default time. Either way, not a big deal, but a bit of miscommunication. Bottom line: David and his crew were excellent. I would hire them again. My basement is dry. :D"

"They responded quickly. There was a little bit of concern whether the work gets done or not the reason I think there is still visible changes to the roof but he did came back and kind of walk us through the process of what he did do and it was only visible from the inside which is why we didn't see anything on the outside."

"We had a fabulous experience with Steve at W&W Construction! <br /> Our house was new when we moved in and so when we gathered bids to finish our basement (roughly 6 months after we moved in), we wanted a contractor who would be willing to use the same subcontractors and materials that had been used throughout the rest of the house so the basement finish would match the quality of the main floor finish. Steve was very accommodating, tracking down the suppliers used and print info for the rest of the house. He got us an estimate in a timely manner, broke the estimate down well so we knew exactly what would be included (like the bathroom mirror, etc.), and answered the questions we had quickly. He also had references available for me to check, which I did. Price-wise, his estimate came in near the middle of the pack - we had several estimates that were higher (some by as much as $10k more), and some lower, though the lower ones often didn't include all the materials that Steve's estimate included. At just under $30/square foot of finished space, for this area and the quality of finishes we were requesting, Steve's bid was very fair. <br /> Initially, Steve thought he wouldn't be able to begin our project until October of 2011. However, because of some delays in his other projects, he and his crew were able to start in late August. Though they started early every morning (7 a.m.), Steve arranged a way for his workers to use an alternate entrance so I didn't have constant traffic through my front door. Steve was very helpful in discussing our design, chalking out lines before starting, and making suggestions when we had questions about closet sizes, door locations, etc. <br /> The work proceeded very much as Steve told us it would. I had considered (because I knew which subcontractors I wanted to work with), working as the general contractor for our basement finish. I'm so glad I didn't! Steve did a great job keeping a steady stream of contractors in, overlapping where possible (such as for the initial plumbing and HVAC work), getting all the necessary permits as well as scheduling the inspections efficiently so we didn't waste time. Throughout the process, Steve was available by phone if he wasn't on site. If we had questions or concerns, he handled them the same day. We did not have any major changes to our design or layout once the work started, but we did have a few minor changes (such as upgrading the pad for the carpet, doing closet rod installation ourselves) and Steve worked out a fair price adjustment for those items. <br /> The project took less than 2 months, which was amazing, given the scope of the work - there was very little wasted time and very few days when there wasn't SOMETHING being done.  Because Steve got started earlier than originally planned, they were actually done with the project before they originally thought they'd be able to START the project! Other than the minor price adjustments I mentioned above, the final cost matched the estimate exactly. <br /> The only negative experience throughout the process was with the subcontractors used to install our carpet - because we had requested that all the same subs who were used to build the house also be used to finish the basement, this really wasn't Steve's fault.  When I shared my concerns and told Steve about my experience with the rude installers, he called the company himself, spoke to a manager, and was there in person to oversee the work when the carpet installers returned to fix the issues they caused.  <br /> Though we have not needed to, when the project was complete Steve told us to contact him if we had any problems with finishes. He definitely stood behind the work that was done and was willing to fix anything that was wrong. <br /> We are thrilled with our basement and feel we got exactly what we asked for from Steve - a high-quality finish that matches our upstairs exactly. Steve was outstanding to work with and he will be the first person we call if we ever have remodeling needs in the future! <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Cedar Falls, IA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
