"Excellent father and son team replaced old smoke alarms throughout the house and hard wired them with zero damage to ceilings. They showed me how the alarms will work for good peace of mind. Also fixed wiring to my backyard outdoor lights and got them up and functioning again. Great work on both projects!"

"He received the notice early on Saturday morning and called within an hour. He was at my house to get the estimate done an hour after that. We agreed to have the install done the following Friday to give him time to get the permits done. He and his son we exactly on time and the price was actually lower than I anticipated. A totally professional job. This guy is on my list for my next electrical job."

"On the recommendation of the generator seller, I hired Mr. Ott to handle the electrical portion of a whole-house generator installation. It was a great experience every step of the way. The morning after the generator was delivered, Mr. Ott visited to view the installation site, take photos, and get the permit process moving. When the permit was available, he called to set up an installation appointment date, telling me to expect the power to go out that morning for the whole day. Sure enough, the power company arrived as scheduled to disable the power; Mr. Ott was here within a few minutes to install the new panel, aided by his son. Within a few hours, the panel was installed. He found that the original electrical installation was not performed according to today's best practices and made some improvements. When he was finished, the new panel was on the outside wall (he even lowered the meter to keep the new panel from being too high) and all cabling from the generator to the panel was buried. He contacted the power company to restore electricity; total outage time was slightly over 5 hours instead of a full day. After this experience, I would hire James Ott to handle any electrical maintenance problems or enhancements in my home. He and his son are capable and personable. What's not to like?"

"We Just needed a new outlet. The gentleman worked quickly and was in and out. $80 service charge for about five minutes of work, but I have no idea what the going rate is for that line of work. Would recommend."

"We could not be more happy with the service we received from Sam. He added electricity to our 12 x 24 foot shed that we had built in our back yard. He ran electrical lines from our breaker box to the back yard. He installed fluorescent lights and outlets inside our shed and an exterior light to meet code. From the time that I initially contacted him for a quote to the follow-up call we received after he was done, everything was done completely professional and to code. We had received a couple quotes from other electricians and none of them mentioned doing work to code. Sam ensured that we had a zoning permit and that was very reassuring because that meant we knew everything was going to be done by the book. The end project was way above my expectations and we got exactly everything that we wanted, plus the county passed our permit."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Cedar-island, NC

While homeowners with substantial electrical knowledge might technically attempt a subpanel installation, most local building departments require permits and inspections for this type of work. Professional electricians understand local code requirements, can obtain necessary permits, and ensure the installation meets safety standards. Given the significant safety risks associated with incorrect electrical work, most homeowners benefit from hiring a licensed professional.

A standard subpanel installation takes an average of four to eight hours. This timeframe may extend if you're installing multiple subpanels or adding specialized circuits like those for spa equipment. Factors such as difficult access points, complex wiring paths, or permit processing times can also affect the overall project duration.

Adding a subpanel doesn't directly reduce electricity consumption or lower your utility bills. A subpanel simply redistributes power from your main panel to additional circuits. However, organizing your electrical system more efficiently may help prevent overloaded circuits and the associated problems. For actual cost savings, consider energy-efficient appliances and lighting instead.

The appropriate subpanel size depends on your specific electrical requirements. Consider the number and type of devices you'll be powering, potential future needs, and the capacity of your main electrical panel. An electrician can perform a load calculation to determine the most suitable amperage rating for your situation, ensuring you have adequate power without overpaying for unnecessary capacity.

A main electrical panel connects directly to your utility's power supply and contains your home's primary service disconnect. It distributes electricity throughout your entire house. A subpanel, by contrast, receives power from the main panel and redistributes it to a specific area of your home. Think of the main panel as the primary distribution point and the subpanel as a secondary branch that extends your electrical system's reach.

While electrical upgrades aren't as immediately visible as kitchen or bathroom renovations, they can contribute to your home's functionality and safety. Prospective buyers often appreciate updated electrical systems that can accommodate modern power demands. A properly installed subpanel that provides additional capacity for workshops, home offices, or future expansions could be an attractive feature for certain buyers, though the direct impact on home value varies by market.
