"I contacted Brazil for estimate on a roof replacement from shake to tile. I provided enough specifics (included structural report) regarding what I wanted that they were able to come to the site, measure and then provide back an estimate with enough detail that I was able to compare the bid to competing offers. The bid was detailed and the price quote fair for the type and size of job. They were willing to sit down to go over the details, but since I was already very familiar with what the job would entail, this was not required. I went with another vendor who was able to provide a custom roof tile at a slightly lower overall bid, but again given the size of the job, differences in materials or type of instal methods used etc. most bids can't be compared as apples to apples. "Do make sure you and your contractor understand each other and explain exactly what you need and want.  Most often
old homes will have problems with dry rot, termites, old electrical and a good contractor lets you know you have these problems and will give you an estimate of what it will cost to fix them.  My opinion is if you are going to have a job done you should not mask problems.  We were fortunate not to have had dry rot.  The bones of our house was in very good condition.  However, our electrical panel was going to need replacing.  If you have your home already open to reside or whatever you are doing the extra time and cost is worth it.
