"Pete Duda great job. He removed a large wood stove and large platform of brick it was sitting on. He installed an electric fireplace insert. "When we had to unexpectedly have work done on our home after a bathroom flood, Mary Jo and her team rescued us. They were prompt, professional and accommodating. Mary Jo had great design ideas and managed the project from beginning to end. So, when it came time to finish our unfinished basement, there was no doubt we would call Mary Jo. We are excited to get started on the project."

"The Meer Electric employees were professional and knowledgeable. The project manager assessed my issue and clearly explained the work they proposed to solve my wiring issue. They also worked to fit me into their busy pre-holiday schedule so I wouldn't be without a range. The electricians who did the job arrived as promised, wrestled the old range out of a very tight space, and installed the new wiring and outlet. They also properly grounded the electrical service panel to meet code. The lead worker explained everything they'd done and they cleaned up the work area. First time I've used Meer, but based on that experience I would definitely hire them again."

"Even though the beautiful floors were laid 4 years ago, All South sent someone out to reinstall the transition pieces at no charge. They stood by their work and responded immediately. The initial work is fabulous, and now the transition pieces are in good shape."

"I hired Mike to do some kitchen remodeling for me on a house I moved into in April of 2020. Originally, the kitchen and dining room were separated by a wall and they both had an entrance into the living room. The place for the fridge was small and cramped and next to a wall, so I could not have a double-door fridge. I asked Mike to remove the wall from the dining room into the kitchen, move the fridge into the previous area to the doorway from the kitchen to the living room and close it off, change the lights in the kitchen to be recessed can lights, create a custom pantry and fridge cabinet to match the existing 1970s cabinets, and expand the original dining room opening to be larger. All of the work was very affordable and Mike kept me updated and communicated with me through the entire process. He also suggested changes when we weren't sure and cleaned up the work area every evening. The work was completed quickly and the group was out by 5PM every workday which is so nice when you're doing a kitchen renovation since it uproots almost your entire home."

"Gary is a cerebral, likable, and low key guy with great technical knowledge and skills. I think of him as a thinking man's electrician. He goes about his diagnostic and repair work in a careful, step-by-step manner. We had a somewhat complex problem, a sudden short circuit in an underground electrical line behind our house of unknown cause. The line had to be replaced. A new 70-foot trench had to be dug and new conduit installed and hooked up. The electrical work had to be coordinated with a trenching crew. Gary's work was excellent, and he always took personal ownership of the problem and its solution. He proceeded systematically and carefully and kept me informed of the status every step along the way. The project took over 2-3 weeks overall, including the digging and the electrical work. It was sometimes difficult and messy but Gary soldiered on, cool and unfazed. His fee was reasonable and fair. We now consider Gary to be our regular electrician for any future projects."

"Everyone at Plantation Renovation was so friendly. They worked with me on some of my “unique” requests - creating a mudroom out of a closet, building custom made doors, etc. We are very happy with the final product."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Decatur, GA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
